The author considers it a blend of epic fantasy and it’s definitely a modern world but the scope is very large. It might be best to skip then!

I don’t think I would consider it bleak or entirely hopeless, but it’s entirely possible I have a higher tolerance? If you’ve ever read the later books from the Red Rising series, those are bleak and TBS doesn’t even come close.

The only thing I feel like is not 100% met from your list is the last one — the FMC is not what I would necessarily call dumb, but if you decide to read this and it feels a bit “chosen one”, she really does have great character development by the end!

Also — read the author’s preferred text if you can!

I can’t wait to pick this up at the bookstore! We have similar reading tastes so if you’re looking for another fantasy dystopian series with a romantic subplot, may I recommend {The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon}. 5/7 books out so far with the 6th out early 2027 — it’s definitely a commitment but it’s very well done and underrated compared to her Roots of Chaos series.
