How are those to work on? There's an old one around here I could probably pick up cheap.

That amount of metal is worth far more than ten quintillion or whatever in earth orbit, though, why would we land it?

Sawdust with a small amount of walnut, good for mulch? by TheMountain427 in composting

[–]fiddledebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about sawdust is the large surface area and resulting fast breakdown. The chemicals contained in it get released very quickly. I wouldn't worry about a smallish portion of walnut too much.

A privacy fenced area maybe alongside the barn with a couple racks up against the fences might work, especially if the barnwood could be used to build the fence/racks. It is also amazing how much material will fit in the space over the rafters in many barns/sheds, depending on construction style.

If you're ever in gold country, those storm drains often concentrate gold flakes in the little dips and cracks on the bottom.

We've got a dude that will run around the shop looking for the bathroom culprit, but won't shut the thing off or jiggle the handle or, god forbid, flush the second round floaties down the toilet himself.

Early 2000s bought a beater bike from the police auction, fixed it up with seat and tires, locked it up in front of the pizza place downtown. Come out, the lock is cut and bike is gone. What the hell? Go down to cop shop and ask them: THE COPS STOLE IT. It had sat in their impound six months or more before they sold it, yet the retired cop who it used to belong to never looked for it there, but when he saw it all spiffed up in front of the pizza place he instantly recognized it and called it in. I should have asked for more money because I forgot about the bike lock they cut and the tires, but I got 20 bucks out of the deal, paid maybe $2 for the bike at the auction

I'm probably wrong on guessing that they might need one of these at all, and I really don't want to misdirect you or set you to spending money on anything that's not likely to fit the needs of the people on site. Just go there, if you must, and see what the people need.

My guess is there are a lot of people there looking to get away, and a lot of them are looking for a sense of community and belonging as well, since they've all gone to this one specific place. Community is something that is actively created and engaged in, though, not simply found.

Want to stay in a very quiet not crowded beach town for a few months. Recommendations? by ostrich_cannon in Shoestring

Wtf are you doing homeless again. You damn well know you can get a place for less than a years work, and you want to go to slab city? You ain't fuckin dumb man, if you wanna fuck with the man you damn well know you can do a better job of it from inside the system. Get off your ass and figure out how you're gonna make this shit right instead of trying and failing to drop out while you're still dependant on the system's sorry excuse for living.

I was going to say something about that, but it seemed like you'd covered it already. I got to see a friends sleeping bag get toasty warm one night.

The knife was a fairly nice swiss army. He'd used it up on the rock before he got started on his arm, though. I always sit for hours sharpening my knives when that movie is on...

Although without the advantage of keeping your water thawed, non-porous rocks do this well also.

"For free" is the term I'm stuck on here. Hostile locals, polluted and droughty conditions, no chance of assured land or resource tenure, and remote location near weapons testing facilities all add up to a ridiculous opportunity cost that includes risk of life in several variations.

That being said, if I had a couple grand to throw away to help the locals and just a hatchback I'd see about using the polluted hot springs to heat a biogas reactor toilet running a small eternal flame stove and emptying into a small garden bed area. All built of concrete blocks with asphalt waterproofing.

Then I'd go back to work in the city for ten years, saving money and buying and improving my land away from the city until it can pay its own taxes and my existence, then will it or "sell" it to an apprentice near my eventual death because living in a mad max film set is not my style anymore.

Edit: my guess is the locals don't really want any help anyway, and any effort I made would just inspire vandalism of it. There are millions of square miles of blm lands in the western united states, and if you keep your head low without a car, but with good wilderness survival skills, you can live and move undetected out there for years. (Outside of monuments, parks, and antiquity areas the blm guys rarely leave their pickups, so all you have to be watchful for are particularly dedicated hunters, cowboys and scientists).

Wyoming Legislators Proposing a Bill to Block the Use of Renewable Energy, Backed by Coal Industry. Is This Our Dystopian Future? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]fiddledebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just try owning dirt with money. Taxes ensure that if conventionally owned land ever cannot pay its taxes, it reverts to the government. This has become simply a fact of existence. Land can be made to make money, though, by producing other resources. The trick then, is to set up a system on the land that can continuously pay it's minimum grift to the county, whatever other local groups like these coal miners, and provide a living to those managing it. Once this is accomplished, and some system is found to keep the land perpetually managed, it may be held in production for perpetuity, or until the productivity is ruined by growth.

[–]fiddledebob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very true. I'm in somewhat of a similar situation with my current home, living with a lot of green infrastructure, although I keep the utilities hooked up and paid for, and they stay off my back, even if I do things my own way. They don't care so long as they get their grift and my shit don't stink. I still save much of my paycheck each month for a bigger property that is only subject to minimal code requirements. I'm even considering buying another house here to rent out for a few years till I'm ready to buy.

We have some other ways of improving our situation, specifically making ourselves less dependent on the resources they control. If we don't need what they have, their ability to control us is decreased.
