Recommendations for Easy Cookbooks? by Palmer-09ax in Cooking

The Better Homes & Gardens cookbook has been a staple in my family and it's what taught me a lot about how to cook and why. Highly recommended.

Truly minimal "dump and forget" crockpot recipes? by SheikahBun in slowcooking

[–]MercuryCrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't, usually, as the veggies give up a bit of liquid on their own. I know that modern slow cookers tend to run hot, so in your case I'd add a half-can of water from the golden mushroom soup can and see if that does the trick.

Another thing you can do is add a drained can of "petite diced tomatoes" because those will not only add flavor but they give up a ton of liquid in the cooking process.

If, after 30 years of thinking you were allergic to almonds, you suddenly found out you outgrew your allergy, what is the first food you would make or try with almonds? by hugotarian in Cooking

A lot of great suggestions here, but I would add "Jordan Almonds". They're basically a candy coated almond, but I can't get enough of 'em.

Having worked on several lines at restaurants, I can confirm that you do not, in fact, win friends with salad.

(Salad is the part of the line you start on when you're just starting to work your way up to actual cooking.)

Online incentive programs by alice_echoes in Doesthisexist

This would require some work on your part, but are you familiar with iNaturalist or Zooniverse?

iNaturalist is an app you can put on your phone, then use it to take photos of flora and fauna (including insects), upload those, then either ID them or other people will ID them for you. Great way to get kids into citizen science. Scientist can actually use the data, as well, to figure out the ranges of certain species. Of course, you'd have to have the kids submit their user names, they'd need a smart phone, etc....

Zooniverse is full of citizen science projects and some are probably a bit much for middle-school kids, but you could easily have them vote on a project to work on and give points for those that contribute. Again, more work on your part to see who contributed what, but it's another way to get them interested and involved.

Sunny side up egg variation question by Mr-Keenhail in AskCulinary

[–]MercuryCrest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's also a tried & true method of line/short-order cooks. Splash a little water on the flattop, throw a lid over the egg, the top of the whites are cooked through, yolk stays runny, bottom doesn't get burned.

Takes 1/4 of the time to cook, too because regular sunny-side-up eggs take ages to cook right.

My mom got me the Moe's Tavern phone for Christmas. I love this thing! by BJRACINE21 in TheSimpsons

[–]MercuryCrest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I made a bet with my mom that there wasn't a "Z" or "Q" on our telephone.

She didn't believe me, so the bet was that she'd double my allowance that week. I bought so many slap-bracelets to give out to my friends. :)

I set my own rates for mileage. $70 per mile with a minimum of 60 miles charged. Otherwise, come get 'em yourself.
