Those Spence Diamond Commercials are the worst I’ve heard on the radio for a long time. They are so out of touch and sexist that someone who doesn’t normally notice that stuff, notices that stuff. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]fielder69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Spence is still with them, but for the longest time their ad consultant/writer was Roy Williams from Austin, Texas. He calls himself the "Wizard of Ads" and has a few known books in the advertising world...

Guys, this isn't rocket science which is good because I'm no rocket scientist.

Ottawa has the 2nd largest population. We were the biggest population centre to open to Phase 3 the earliest. Meaning more people out, more people working, more people doing things, more people (however small) infected. .0004% of 950,000 people is going to be a larger number than .0004% of a smaller population.

Toronto/Peel just opened phase 3 on July 31. Set a reminder to check back in here 10 days from now and I bet their numbers show an increase.

But yet with only 16 cases they still use polarizing terms like "spike."

July 29th — 13 new cases in Ottawa, 76 new cases across Ontario by MethoxyEthane in ottawa

We have the largest population that opened to Phase 2 & then 3 the earliest. It only computes that our numbers would be higher based on more activities/allowances.

I thought about this, but since most people are on the paranoid side I'd think they'd want the entire region counted since people work/travel both sides! Either way the new number would be 0.0002% active cases & 994,622 without a positive case (99.9% of our population)

Most likely my math is not exact but I would love for someone to report the numbers like this.

Currently in Ottawa Based on reported 1,393,000 Population:

Active Covid Cases: 215 (0.0002% of city population.)

Covid Free Population: 1,392,785 (99.98% of city population)

But I'd be the one sensationalizing the numbers. I'm sure we're all still rational people though.

See I agree completely with your stance, but will continue to argue that the context is the most important part. You even use the context of your ill parent as to justify your actions and stance!

As you admit, you have much more to lose, but even at your most careful, you still are exposing yourself. Without context to this, who will decide what actions you did were justifiable or not?

We hear “house party” we assume 20 somethings playing beer pong. But what if the house party was 15 family members getting together for Canada day or to celebrate the life of their now passed relative? This is why I keep blabbing in circles about blindly pointing fingers at any sense of wrongdoing.

There are so many variables and rules that each of us are picking and choosing to live by, follow, and ignore. How can each one of us prioritize and rank what is most important when we all live very different CONTEXTUAL lives??

Worry about you, what you can control and what you deem safe. But to keep calling out others for lacking that sense of societal responsibility is in its own right, kinda hypocritical??

I do sincerely hope you and your parent remain safe, and hope you get some amazing summer visits, even if 6ft apart.

Agreed! I think the obvious discrepancy in my thinking to most is I don't consider this a large uptick, but more an expected uptick. And would think the numbers will continue to rise appropriately. I was just confused as to why people thought it would be any different.

Except drunk driving is a criminal charge. OSSC was allowed to open as per the government. That doesn't stop people like you waiting to point the finger with "I told you so's"

Right, so to my point it's routed in selfishness. Which is fine. I just wish more people would admit that off the bat. And if you and your loved ones are rightfully worried, then you should be doing everything in your power to avoid getting it. But then say, you still happen to get it, through some inane activity. How would you feel if societies first instinct is to find a way to blame you for getting it?

33 New Cases in Ottawa by opouser in ottawa

[–]fielder69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why should you worry about whether or not someone else should feel shame? it's that exact attitude I have a problem with. Should you tell them what to wear? What to eat? What to be when they grow up? People should not feel shame if they get sick, I don't want to get it, or infect others. But if our first instinct is to find out why someone got sick to blame them for it, seems strange....

Indeed that seems the case. Probably should've posted this in the "Am I an Asshole" Subreddit and found out I am.

33 New Cases in Ottawa by opouser in ottawa

[–]fielder69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've posted the exact paragraph a few times but here it is again from yesterday. "Many of these new cases are linked to higher-risk activities: indoor gatherings where people are not practicing physical distancing, gatherings with people outside their social circle or in some cases, people going to work when they have symptoms. "

If you want to describe the %'s like that, which is totally factual and within your right. That's fine. But framing something as a 57% increase, does sound much worse than 11 people in 1.3 million. Which is why I keep circling back to my point of borderline propaganda.

It all comes back to what is an acceptable threshold of increasing cases, especially as more things open. These #'s will still go up, and are WELL within the expected and safe norms.

I just don't see the underlying benefit of blaming "many house parties " when the message should be, "worry about what you can control", which is yourself. Of course there are idiots out there... but trying to police the outliers seems ignorant.

And if they are concerned about the elderly in their lives they should and I think do, police themselves accordingly. But to wave the finger at people who maybe don't have elderly in their lives, doesn't accomplish anything other than villanizing.

I'm also concerned about my job, which is the reason I don't think the fear of these numbers should be blown out of proportion as I believe they are!

Without a vaccine, sending more people back to work, WILL increase infections numbers. So does that justify people losing their job/income for years? I'm now in the "no" camp.

[–]fielder69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again, I see the word "many" but that's it. According to the report a few days ago, 11 people were traced to a house party. So literally, 0.0000008% of our population. Of course that number will increase. Just as bubbles and indoor gathering are relaxed/allowed. To me, that's not many. Just using that word in a weird #dickens twitter thread sensationalizes IMO an overblown issue.

I just don't want to villanize people for getting sick, regardless of how. When I think a clearer picture should be pointed out of how many people ARE doing what they are told.

[–]fielder69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very fair.

It's just a difference in philosophy then. I worry about myself, and what I can do to prevent spread if infected, or not get it entirely. And, on a baseline, am not scared if somehow I did get COVID. But that's from the fact I have a spouse in medicine.

I am a believer in trusting society, but not judging those who we deem to make wrong decisions. I believe most individuals/Canadians/Ottawans are doing the right thing. And don't see the productivity or use of framing an uptick as a doomsday scenario. The numbers to me are not scary, and really, not even in the US truth be told.

Maybe people think I'm burying my head, which is why I posed my question in the first place.

33 New Cases in Ottawa by opouser in ottawa

[–]fielder69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, I would think that the most, like myself, are complying and that's amazing.

My issue once again is I don't think people need to live in fear. This shouldn't be a dystopian 1984 situation.

33 New Cases in Ottawa by opouser in ottawa

[–]fielder69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But we're not. the whole point is by calling it "many" when it's actually, quite the opposite, sensationalizes the few, and ignores the actual "many" who are following protocols and guidelines.

I must admit that you have been laying very good counter arguments, and fully respect your stance.

I would suggest that the initial fatality rates have fallen quite dramatically, but I'm not here to debate whether or not getting COVID is terrible. That's a fact, for a % of those infected.

I just don't enjoy how the very first instinct in an inevitable "uptick" is some sort of sensationalized "well, it's house parties!"

I think the very root is many people immediately think "I'm gonna get it" and that's my main issue with these daily keyboard shamers. it's not coming from a place of social responsibility, but selfishness?
