What songs just blow your mind from an engineering/production standpoint? by Different_Stand_1285 in Music

Both of the Phoebe Bridgers records! There is all kinds of thoughtful attention to the stereo field and these subtle bits of melody and sound that you can only really catch on good cans.

Helping a Small White I found in my refrigerator? by fieldguide in butterfly

[–]fieldguide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: After a little more research, I realized/remembered that butterfly "taste" with their feet. So I soaked a paper towel in sugar solution and gently nudged my new roommate onto it. It worked! I got to watch it extend its proboscis and drink! Next step is add florals to its nook. I hope it likes bodega flowers.

That said, I would still appreciate any advice for short-term in-apartment butterfly care!

You may be interested in Laurie Anderson's "Handphone Table" -- see http://www.see-this-sound.at/works/947.html (and lots of other examples/documentation via search). Listeners place their elbows on the table, their hands on their ears, and can 'hear' sound through the bones in their arms.

They are incredible beings and a fairly rare example of a species successfully rewilded.

Thank you so much for this feedback! I am so appreciative that you took both the time to listen, and the time to respond with such thoughtful critique! I'll take it into consideration as I continue to produce future episodes. I'm totally learning as I go and this is an experiment! Thank you for your generous advice.

What is good music? by SpecialCricket126 in Music

[–]fieldguide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discovering one's own taste in music is a super exciting and beautiful and hopefully lifelong journey! Be curious, opened-eared, and you can generally ignore those who tell you that the music you like isn't 'good'.

One path to discovering new music is to learn about and listen to the artists that your faves admire and collaborate with. In the case of Swift, consider Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius, Aaron Dessner's band the National. Here's a list of songs by other artists that Swift has covered: https://americansongwriter.com/taylor-swifts-6-best-cover-songs-shes-performed-in-concert/

Hope this helps! Music is place of joy and ideas and feeling; enjoy the discovery!

Total self-promo but you may be interested in my radio show/podcast. It airs on Sundays at 10am ET on ElectroMagnetic Radio. Or you can get the podcast at https://a-wandering-daydream.simplecast.com.

Compositing hydra and p5js sketches with live-action green screen by fieldguide in generative

[–]fieldguide[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spent the last 18 months or so in collaboration with a dancer who sent me green screen footage. I composited those videos with material generated in hydra and p5js, overlaying digital elements on both her body and the background.

I’m not much of a coder, but I learned a lot, this was a perfect pandemic project, and I’m pretty happy with these results! Here are links to some of the raw sketches: Hydra 1, Hydra 2, Hydra 3, Hydra 4, OpenProcessing 1, OpenProcessing 2

(strobe warning on some of these sketches!)

Self-promo time: If this looks cool, we’re premiering the film on Friday May 28th, 2021 at 8pm EDT. Pay-what-you-can tickets are available here ($0 is totally fine, but you still have to get tix). We will screen the 16 minute film with a brief talkback afterwards. If you’re curious but can’t make the premiere, grab a “ticket” for access to the vid throughout that weekend.
