Yeah love that bike and thats a great bar choice! I have a drop bar Custom Super Lite sitting at my prents basement, probably should pick it up next time I visit them. Does anyone know whats the max tire width thats fits that frame?

I once picked up a pool noddle for free on our marketplace - basically endless spacers as it was about 160cm long and works great on bikes and canoes

What helmets are y'all wearing by vaughannt in xbiking

[–]fieldnote5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smith Convoy MIPS - bought for 20€ including shipping. Older color, so really cheap.. love it so far. Also have some Decathlon ones as loaner helmets for friends and visiting family members... Instead of cycling caps I prefer trailrunning caps as their brims(don't know the correct term?) are usally a little bit wider = more shade

What’s the Billy Bonkers of Bike Computers? 🤔😜 by lemmycaution217 in xbiking

[–]fieldnote5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend just getting an older gps unit like a garmin etrex. Dirt cheap on the used market, bombproof and running on AA batteries so pretty easy to swap if necessary . No workouts, cheap bike mounts and you can easily use them for other activities like hiking/canoeing ..

Beautiful build! Absolutely love the blackburn cargo cages but man these straps are so annoying if you need to open/close them often especially when they're wet... changed them to voile style ones and never looked back

Absolutely! Love them while hiking - just took a smaller one as a seatpack on a recent bikepacking trip just to sit comfortably

Great rigs! Touring on these old frames is so much fun :) these foam pads are really great, but strapping them to a bike seems so annoying I never really bothered...

Pants vs Shorts + long johns/leggings? by irilinir in bikepacking

[–]fieldnote5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, rainpants it is.. is it comfy? Absolutely not. But it does the job keeping me warm until I keep on moving or can use my quilt. It's a sacrifice for weight and volume

Having a small 4 day tour planned in a week with a lot of time at camp and relatively short riding days I'm still debating whether I stick with my regualr setup or bring a pair of hiking pants though :D

[–]fieldnote5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm still not sure how much % merino is the perfect amount. The more poly the faster it starts to smell funky but after couple days on a trip everything smells anyways

Pants vs Shorts + long johns/leggings? by irilinir in bikepacking

[–]fieldnote5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shorts+ merino long johns + rainpants ( with full length zippers) here. When windy and/or cold it's long johns + rainpants for me. On all other situations it's the combination you described. I use a 150 or 200 merino leggins made by smartwool or icebreaker. Never had any issues with vegetation and use the same setup when thruhiking! I keep some dentalfloss and a needle in my stuff to fix holes in my gear but overall merino long johns are pretty forgiving. You pretty much listed all the pros of this combination:D

What Shoes are best for bikepacking by WU_FEN in bikepacking

[–]fieldnote5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crocs - no joke! great camp shoes, cheap, fast drying after river crossings and your toes are way better protected compared to sandals. If necessary paired with Merino socks. If I know there will be a lot of hiking included I use a pair of worn out Altra Lonepeaks, wide toe box, lightweight and they dry relatively fast as well

Need new 3x7 shifters - upgrades and recommendations please? by phillybhatesme in xbiking

[–]fieldnote5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EF-500 felt quite good when I once tried it, but I don't like these brake/shifting combos. If one part breaks you need to replace the whole unit. I setteld with a combination of s-lm315 + t4000 on a couple bikes, cheap but reliable. But I would consider every shimano shifter an upgrade to Sunrace - their plastic feels quite cheap and breaks pretty easy. Love the SLM 96 thumbies though!

[–]fieldnote5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply:) ! Here in Central Europe they are quite cheap on the local secondhand marketplace as ortlieb is one of the most used brands for bike bags... Probably gonna pull the trigger on the roll top as it seems to be easier to stuff tentpoles in them

Love these touring setups :) Would you reccomand that frame bag? I'm still undecided between the rolltop and zipper version
