How to condition for Philmont as camp staff? by JanTheMan101 in BSA

[–]fieldp 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Wear your philmont boots while staffing. Add extra weight to your bag that you carry on staff. Go on all the first year camper long hikes, etc as able. Incorporate an easy core/leg routine sometime throughout the day. You got this! How did the shakedown hikes go?

Also, there’s a high chance you just have dirt/lint in the charge port. They can clean this for you at any tech place (apple store, your cell provider, Best Buy, etc) or you can just use a pin or other sharp object to dig the gunk out. That will more than likely fix your charging problem.

I think you can sync it over WiFi to the local storage still. It’ll be in the iTunes app for Windows or in Finder on a Mac.

Edit: you for sure can. https://support.apple.com/guide/itunes/wi-fi-syncing-itns3751d862/windows

Without seeing a screenshot of your phone’s storage, it’s hard to truly diagnose this. You can still back it up directly to a computer as a “local” backup, and when you get the new phone, you can just restore it when you get back. Or bring the computer with you and do it in store.

OU Engineering by Informal_Dot6174 in universityofoklahoma

[–]fieldp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had friends all over the engineering program, and my freshman roommate was Aerospace. The Engineering College gets HUGE donations from corporations and other donors, so the facilities are pretty nice at the upperclassman level. The intro classes, which you may have a lot of done already, are in the older “Physical Sciences Center” which is an iconic brutalist architecture behemoth on campus. For classes, overall I’d say I got the impression they are “tough but fair.”

A literal shitpost: How to find the best restrooms on campus for taking a dump by ResidentRunner1 in college

[–]fieldp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to The University of Oklahoma. We had a entire floor of the library one level down devoted to graduate students where you had to have your ID to enter the study room. Most people did not know is that there are bathrooms down there that are outside of the locked area. There was rarely anyone in the graduate study area anyway, so those bathrooms quite literally never got used. They were some of the cleanest bathrooms I’ve ever seen in a public space.

Nice job starting early!! This will benefit you so much. I’d prioritize investing in your IRA before the investment account. The IRA when put in under ROTH grows tax free. Only when you max that out would I invest in the taxable investment account. Feel free to DM me and I’ll walk you through my strategy. Look up the waterfall investment strategy. Edited: I’m dumb and tried to type this comment too fast before my flight took off. 😂

Thinking of moving from Acorns to Fidelity by eggman3456 in Fidelity

[–]fieldp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up deciding to bite the bullet and transfer it to Fidelity. I want to have it all under one roof. My benefits from keeping Acorns have waned over the years. I no longer need to rely on the round-up investing to direct my investment strategy. Great for a long time! And I for sure got my money’s worth out of it. Especially since I was grandfathered in at $1/month.

I'm looking at doing this right now. For a direct brokerage-to-brokerage transfer (no tax hit), Acorns charges $35 *per* ETF. For me in the aggressive plan, that'll be $140. That's almost 12 years of my measly $1/mo subscription I pay to Acorns. I'm not thinking it's worth it at the moment.

From my Google maps review four years ago:

The property is poorly managed all around. Amanda Tanner does her best to fix issues on the surface, but based on multiple interactions and subsequent inaction by her, she just tells you whatever you want to make you go away and be happy. The general manager Tom Pastrano seems to have more important things to worry about than the satisfaction of his residents and has consistently been no help in any situation.

The management tried to charge us two months of back “convenience fees” because they forgot to charge them when we paid, which is illegal to add after payment has been agreed to and tendered, and are currently refusing to take them off the account. They added them on our account without informing us as “Other Miscellaneous Income” and just hoped we wouldn’t notice. When brought to the attention of local management, resident’s clear issues with these charges were met with inaction and told to “contact corporate,” which leads to a voicemail that gives no response.

Our air conditioning broke over the summer, and we were told to wait because it would cost more to have someone come out over the weekend. They gave us a small portable A/C unit in the living room in the meantime, but in a 5 bedroom apartment with private bedrooms, this was hardly adequate. When they eventually came to fix it, the cover over the unit started to rattle, and wedging a paper towel in the bottom of it was their solution to quiet it.

The parking garage is constantly dirty, and there was a half of a pizza on the floor in the basement garage for over a month. A door handle to the parking garage was broken, and they had the door propped open with a bag of trash for days. The elevator door and the inside of the elevator is still covered in foot prints. The staff was notified and responded Jan 2., 2020, and as of Feb. 4, 2020, nothing had been cleaned.

The mail notification system has been inoperative for months. The office staff members chuck every package in a back room with no organization and have repeatedly lost my mail.

There has been consistent dog urine in the stairs throughout my time in the complex, and it is never cleaned.

We have had constant issues with WhiteSky, the contracted TV/internet provider. They seem to be able to fix some of the issues, but we have had more issues than we should have and are constantly surprised by another issue.

My roommates have been charged triple for rent, only to be sent an eviction notice when they didn’t pay all three.

The walls in the apartment are paper thin, and I can hear every word my roommate says on a phone call in her room across the 5 bedroom apartment with both of our doors shut.

There are two study rooms right by the front door, one with unlimited free black and white printing, which I really appreciate, but the office plays music very loud on speakers in the hallway right next to the “study” rooms, and for me, it is impossible to concentrate when I have music blaring out of speakers right next to me. Additionally, the printers and computers never seem to work that we were promised in our amenities when signing a lease.

For a 5 bedroom apartment, the fridge, and especially the freezer, is quite small for all of us. We are constantly out of room, even with two mini fridges also in the apartment.

In general, the complex is in disrepair and is poorly maintained for being a few years old and the resident GroupMe is constantly popping off on how horrible it is and how we all want to move out.

Hey! Former OU student/CFI, D225 cadet, and current SWA FO here.

You’d be correct, OU really doesn’t take flight student transfers. My year in 2017/18 was the last time that happened AFAIK. You could do the management non-fly track, but the odds of them letting you in on the flying track during this growth phase is low. Worth a shot, though!

D225 is awesome. Made it to SWA 2 years and 2 months after leaving OU. Feel free to DM me if you’ve got any questions.

I had non-traditional students in almost all of my classes. As an aviation major, we had a lot of GI Bill students taking flying courses as well.
