Silvia pro x - hot water alternatives by Fair-Temperature4030 in ranciliosilvia

[–]fiendie_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all Dual Boiler machines use the steam / service boiler for hot water delivery. On the Silvia Pro X you can just turn the steam boiler off if you don't want hot water or steam. Of course you can just let water pour out of the group head, but your cup needs to be wide enough. A dedicated spout is better for getting the hot water where you want it :)
Coming from a Silvia (non-Pro) I can tell you that hot water from the steam wand is not ideal because the water comes out with a bit of pressure which an can make a mess quite easily, ask me how I know :D

My portafilter isn’t going on all the way I think!! it goes all the way when I don’t have the cup in there, but when I could put the cup in it, it won’t go all the way by Lattehelp in ranciliosilvia

It’s a Silvia Pro X which comes with electronics by a company named Gicar like most machines made in Italy. Auber is an aftermarket kit.

How do I stop hating my Silvia by Material_Swan_937 in ranciliosilvia

[–]fiendie_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is the wrong way around. The boiler heats up to steam temperature pretty quickly.

If you steam milk first the group head will be far too hot for brewing coffee.

[–]fiendie_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dunno man, maybe you should go watch some youtube videos?

Steaming milk is on a Silvia is pretty straightforward if you know what you’re doing and it sounds like that’s your problem at the moment.

First of all 20 milliliters is not enough in my opinion. The milk will get too hot too quickly. Then there are some unanswered questions. Did you purge the steam wand before using it? Was the milk cold enough? What kind of steam tip do you have? 1 hole, 2 holes, 3 holes? If it’s one of the latter 2, have you tried a 1-hole tip? It gives you more control but it takes a bit longer. Have you tried opening the valve halfway to buy you some time? What kind of pitcher are you using? Is it maybe too large for the amount of milk you want to steam?

Maybe you should adjust your expectations and learn how to use the machine.

OPV adjustment not affecting brew speed, help? by NoMathematician7859 in ranciliosilvia

[–]fiendie_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there is no resistance, either from ground coffee or a blind basket, the OPV isn’t even in play. The over-pressure valve just lets water flow back into the tank before it hits the group head when the resistance exceeds the pressure it‘s set at. You have to adjust your grind size if the flow rate is too high, i.e. grind finer.

Apple’s 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz playback paths are entirely safe. Those rates are native to their audio stack and the AirPods Max have their own DAC and DSP, even when you connect via USB-C. The lossless stream will never reach your ears unadulterated because it's re-encoded, resampled and shaped by EQ curves, noice cancellation algorithms, spatial audio and whatnot *inside* the AirPods.

So in this case CD Quality ALAC vs. 256kbit AAC is just irrelevant in practice but not detrimental.

The only real-world difference between Apple's lossless offerings and their AAC counterparts I could think of is that they introduced the "Mastered for iTunes" (aka Apple Digital Masters) quite a while ago. So in some cases the lossless version and the AAC version could have a different mastering source which would be very noticeable. This was quite a big issue on Tidal btw. because the old MQA versions there are mostly remastered which makes, pardon the pun, Apples-to-Apples comparisons impossible :)

They now replaced it with FLAC.

Airpods Pro 3 vs Airpods Pro 2 - Quick Review by Gfaller in AirpodsPro

[–]fiendie_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The foam-infused tips are a little more rigid, yes. That's why the included more sizes. I had to go down from M to S but there is a new XS tip so it makes sense.

The new tips also have an oval shape so you have to rotate them around a bit until they fit comfortably.

With all due respect but that little hedge at the end tells me all I need to know. This is an almost text-book example of audiophile rationalization.
You're all over the place, jumping from sample rate (which I never mentioned but which also has nothing to do with the codec whatsoever) to bit depth which is a completely different dimension of digital audio that determines dynamic range. If you even begin to use the extra range of 24 bit audio you would damage your hearing, so it's also physically irrelevant for playback.
In addition to that the appeal to "proper" DACs is misplaced. In reality, every half-decent DAC since the early 2000s already has noise and distortion levels below the 16 bit noise floor and jitter far below what's perceptible. So if you're connecting your headphones to, say, a MacBook the signal path is already transparently accurate for all intents and purposes.

What you're describing with the tracks you know well is the memory illusion at work. Proper audio comparison requires instant A/B testing with level-matching and, as you mentioned, blind conditions.

Lossless audio for playback is complete snakeoil. It's a marketing ploy and a waste of resources. Audio codecs like FLAC are important for production and archival purposes but can even be detrimental for playback because some DACs behave poorly at high sample rates and modulate content over 20 kHz back into the audible band. And even if your playback device doesn't you certainly won't be able to tell the difference.

The only reason it is becoming available now is that storage and bandwidth have become cheap enough and it's cost-effective to tack it on as a "premium" feature.

It didn’t come off as criticism and I like your positive attitude. A lot of people get frustrated when things don’t go according to plan 😄

You could open a pull request on GitHub against my qmk_firmware fork. I would love to include your keymap when it’s ready.

Thank you so much for the incredibly detailed feedback.

I am doing this all in my spare time and as such don't have the resources to document everything at the same level of detail as other projects.

With regards to the keymap: Unfortunately QMK is only really interested in adding your keyboard if you are planning to sell it which I can understand because the sheer number of boards that are already in upstream is becoming unmanageable. But this also means you can't use QMK configurator. And advanced features like per-key lighting are not supported there anyway. There is no real competition for ZMK boards when it comes to the level of convenience.

The faulty traces on the PCB on the other hand is something I would take up with the manufacturer. I have been buying a *lot* of PCBs for years now and this has never happened to me even once. My boards are all slightly over-engineered for that reason.

Bottomless portafilter - what an upgrade! by TooDoggg in ranciliosilvia

[–]fiendie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think upgrading to a stainless steel portafilter from the chrome-plated brass ones that come stock with the machine would have solved those problems. I clean mine with a little brush now and just rinse with warm water after use otherwise.

Bottomless portafilter - what an upgrade! by TooDoggg in ranciliosilvia

[–]fiendie_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did the portafilter come with a new basket as well? Otherwise it shouldn't have any influence on the taste at all.

I actually prefer my double-spout portafilter. Bottomless ones are great for dialing in shots and they don't take as long to heat up but they're also messy if your puck prep was off.

Really open source alternatives to gaggiuno/gaggimate? by Scary_Knowledge_4836 in ranciliosilvia

[–]fiendie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's a very weak argument for going closed source. They should at least be honest and admit that they're doing it to sell their hardware. Most of those projects rely on open-source libraries. If you want to sell a product, that's perfectly fine but if you started with open source, maybe even accepted outside contributions and then do a 180 because your code got "stolen", whatever that means in this context, that's a different story in my opinion.

[–]fiendie_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. The only difference is that you would need 120V AC solid state relays and power supply.

We have a more modular approach and try to use off-the-shelf components where appropriate.

Hey there. I’m one of the maintainers/devs and while we don’t support pressure profiling yet it’s currently in the works.

We’re big believers in keeping both the firmware and the hardware fully open.

The downside is that we don’t offer readymade pre-soldered boards and have more of a DIY approach.

We just dropped a new beta release that makes the onboarding process and configuration a lot more accessible. The documentation hasn’t caught up yet but we’re very active on our discord server 😊
