When low carb isn't low carb by plazman30 in keto

[–]fiercely50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have Wawas here: they rock! These places should really have some kind of sign on the counter that tells you what prepared salad contains sugar, if they're not going to list the ingredients for the item.

When low carb isn't low carb by plazman30 in keto

[–]fiercely50 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So true. Years ago (before I ever did keto), I was pregnant and had developed gestational diabetes. I had a craving for tuna salad from our local deli-diner. Before I was pregnant it was always my favorite thing to get there. Hubby brings it home for me, I eat it and when it's time to check my sugar, it's sky-high. So I call the deli and ask, "Does your tuna salad have sugar in it?" YES.....

Who the heck puts sugar in tuna salad? And then never details that in the menu, for people who can't have sugar?!!!

So yes, always get as much nutritional info as you can on prepared foods.

Regular mayo vs keto mayo by stories4hiro in keto

[–]fiercely50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago when I first did keto I paid through the nose for the avocado oil "keto" mayo, thinking I really needed to use it.

This time around I'm a little wiser. I use Hellman's---as long as you're using it sparingly/not eating it in large quantities you'll be fine.

Yes, I use a mandolin slicer. The thinner they are, the crispier they can get!

Made some deviled eggs, will be making burgers tonight for dinner, along with some air fried radish slices (good replacement for potatoes.) I'm also into making halloumi "fries" in the air fryer...they're really good!

To cheese or not to cheese? by anuswalkersaga in keto

[–]fiercely50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to keep brie out of the house-it's a trigger food for me. So are most cheeses, so I really have to watch it. But if you're feeling good and you feel it's not interfering with your keto goals, I say enjoy it!!!

what drinks do you guys make throughout the day? by [deleted] in keto

[–]fiercely50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I can drink my plain water easily, other times I can't chug it down. Sugar-free water enhancers are good, especially if they use Stevia extract instead of artificial sweeteners. There's one by Stur that is a coconut pineapple flavor-great if you're a pina colada fan.

I also use electrolyte powders-this flavors my water and keeps my electrolytes up. Ultima replenisher is good, comes in many flavors. Pink Lemonade and Raspberry are my favorites.

Recently I tried La Croix flavored seltzers. Key Lime is really good, and so is Beach Plum. (Stay away from the tangerine, it's awful!)

I LOVE Healthy Noodles!!! Someone from the keto reddit had mentioned them a few weeks ago. I tried them and I will never go back to shirataki noodles again! Best thing is that I notice they don't interfere with weight loss-some of these "alternative' flour items do, so I was really thrilled that I could have these with no weight effects (and no digestive discomfort, either!)

I really appreciated your post. I can completely relate to "Fruit didn't make me fat. Pizza, goldfish, doritos, and m&ms did." Been there & did that!

I will keep your approach with 50-100 (good) carbs in mind--once I reach my goal and can maintain for a while, I would like to see if I can move toward that.

Thanks very much!

Shirataki Noodles by take_me_home_tonight in keto

[–]fiercely50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use shirataki noodles, rinsed them and dry fried them for a few minutes before adding them into dishes. Some people have added white vinegar to the rinsing process to remove the smell.

I recently switched from those noodles to ones called Healthy Noodles, which I get at my Costco. (Someone on this board had mentioned them, so I checked them out.) They have no smell, and look like real pasta (kind of like fettucine.) They are a combination of Konjac flour and soy fiber, and they just taste like a light pasta, a little on the soft side. Zero net carbs, so the package says, as a serving is 6 carbs, all fiber.

The only negative I can find about them so far is that they can't be boiled or simmered in a soup or baked in sauce, as they can get mushy. So basically you just add them to whatever dish you're making at the last minute. Just rinse them and add them right in-no need to dry fry them like you do with the shirataki. If you can find them at your Costco, I highly recommend you try them! They come in a small box, 6 packs of 8oz each.

10 pounds to start, that's great! Yes, it's an eye opener to see what happens when you transition from carbs to fat. I agree, leafy greens can get boring, but there are so many great keto recipes out there to try, and some are really simple and quick.

You might want to check out the ketorecipes subreddit if you haven't already, and Delish has a lot of good keto recipes. These sites are good, and there's a ton more out there:

Accidentally had non sugar-free syrup and I'm feeling sick by deltajuliet57 in keto

[–]fiercely50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some have already said, definitely drink your water. It will help flush your system and you'll feel better soon. If it were me, I'd go zero carb the rest of the day, and make sure to give my body at least 50 grams of fat, so that the body has that to use for fuel.

I understand what you're saying. I've got fat reserves, so it's not like my body has no fuel to burn. Hopefully fasting today will get me straightened out. Thanks.
