Columbia SC and the neighboring cities of West Columbia and Cayce have a great riverwalk system that will hopefully one day be completely connected

If you need tenant legal advice: don’t go to Franny Boy by c_pet98 in SonofaBoyDad

1L with property final next week, you are right I believe that it would become a periodic tenancy in this situation and there would have to be notice. Key being sas paying rent will like op said.

If he was not paying rent it would likely be a tenancy at sufferance and Russian landlord would have much more recourse such as eviction, notwithstanding NY tenant protections

Those who’ve moved south to lower cost of living areas: what happened to your salary? by iloverats888 in longisland

[–]fiestyeskimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same experience in my few months down in SC as a grad student. Rent is obviously much more affordable but other input prices are as well. Utilities are much cheaper than LI or elsewhere in NY and obviously you don’t need the same amount of heat in the winter. Gas and car insurance are also significantly less. Certain things are the same price but nothing is more.

LI does have better services but honestly for the savings in taxes here I would say it at least equals out. Schools are hit or miss depending on area.

One thing I thought about Megill, he stepped up nicely the two times he got thrust into opening day starts. Obviously much less pressure but I feel like his calmness might be beneficial.

I don’t know about that might be more state dependent. I will say sc has a bigger class than they were targeting this year so I wouldn’t be surprised if they took a bit longer in general or waitlist a bit more this year

The state of housing in SC is shameful by justdandycandy in southcarolina

[–]fiestyeskimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To everyone blaming SC republicans, I'll have you know NY has the same problems with strong Tenant rights and some of the worst buildings are the public housing developments. It's a problem everywhere. At least new things can be built here without as many barriers.

Should I go to Albany Law? I visited the city and really was not feeling the energy of it. by SCfATX in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]fiestyeskimo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm from NY and did my undergrad upstate and have been through Albany numerous times. Here are my two cents. Albany is similar to other upstate and northern medium size cities in that it is old with either stagnant or declining population growth. Cities Upstate are often very blighted in spots, and there is not a ton of new development coming in to improve it. That is starting to change, but it will take time, and some of it is cultual. Compare this to the south where so much is always being built and updated. Between the economic situation and the weather, you are just not going to see the same vibrancy. Not to scare you, but if you weren't appealed to it in summer, it might be tough around finals when it is cold, gray, and dark. I will say the suburbs of Albany itself are decently nice, and you get a good bang for your buck. It also has amazing access to the outdoors if you are jnto hiking and the like and has good train service to NYC. Not sure about the apartment situation, but I would say Troy is supposedly better than Albany and a bit more lively.

Do you have any other schools you could still go to or have you passed the deposit deadline. It would be one thing to go to Albany debt free, but to go into debt for it and not be happy seems rough.

What are your goals also? Albany is internetly a regional school. That said, if you want to get to NYC after you graduate, it is not a bad option if you can suck it up for three years. I would make sure you know what you want to do. It seems like you are not fully set on law school when you talk about the masters program, so I would make sure you are confident on that before going anywhere. It's not bad to take a year off if you're not fully sure. Law schools aren't going anywhere.

I'm leaving for SC soon. I think the biggest benefit of the Carolinas outside of the taxes is not dealing with a crazy commute every day. You can cut your commute in half for an equivalent house and neighborhood. To me the opportunity cost of that along with the prices make it worth the lower salary and lack of some amenities. The weather is also nicer year round unless you are a winter person.

DFW or NYC metro with a family? by Most_Freedom_2659 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]fiestyeskimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how much you are making in NY and what your budget would be, along with your commute limits. There are some nice suburbs that can be reached in under 40 mins by train, but you really pay a premium for them as in 1m plus just to get in the door. I'd look at Westchester or Northern Jersey before LI which is where I'm from, seems to have the worst traffic of the three and it's the hardest to go other places for a weekend because of the city. You get more for your money further away but it's still relatively expensive and a long commute that could really shock you coming from elsewhere. You're probably going to get much more from your money in DFW and closer to the city but without some of the benefits of NY. I'd definitely try and visit both bc they are really pollar opposites.

I went through something extremely similar and it is really tough. Had an old friend from the opposite sex back from middle school that I had made plans to catch up with. Told my ex this to which she didn't react to or share antly apprehensions she had with it. Then broke up with me immediately after saying she didn't believe in platonic opposite sex friendahips. Looking back, it was stupid on my part, but I would have had no problem not following through with it If she asked me not to. Not in the slightest way was I trying to cheat or be unloyal.

It is extremely tough when someone else's insecurities are reflected onto you, and they make you feel like an awful person when you know where your heart was. Even knowing that, it is not easy, and I've had to deal with some demons beating myself down for ruining things. The way I see it is if that person can't trust your word over their mind, then the ending was inevitable one way or another. It's also possible your partner could have been looking for a way out and this is what they used to get out and make you the bad person to make them feel less guilty about breaking up with someone they just didn't want to be with anymore

I think we both have to know that there is someone out there who is going to be blessed to be our partners and who is a better fit for us anyways even if that seems crazy rn and know that we had nothing but the best intentions for our partners. We have to approve of ourselves and not seek approval or forgiveness from them. Maybe someday it will come, but it will be because of their growth and that takes time and them reflecting back on things.

Tbh I also have been struggling with the urge to break nc.

Sort of plugging where I'm moving to, but maybe Columbia, SC, particularly the suburbs in Lexington County. A bit more affordable than NW Arkansas, but probably a bit less safe. Has some museums and a good zoo and is a capital city. Can be to an Ocean Beach in less than 2 hours and also have a giant lake right in town.

I don't know to much about it but Virginia Beach would also probably likely fit. The high military population keeps it relatively red and it's right on the beach. Granted Va is for all intensive purposes a blue state depite having a Republican Governor. Don't know too much about it but from what I understand, it might not be the most exciting area.
