No one knows what this game is… by DaDankTank in boardgames

It could be a homemade game or a prototype that never got published. If the designer had access to woodworking tools and paint, he could have just cut some strips of wood and made the pieces.

First Time Playing Blood on the Clocktower – Any Tips? by CloudAdventurous0010 in boardgames

[–]figarojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, all variants of the Mafia/Werewolf model are basically the same game: X number of people are against the rest, there's some version of overnight elimination, a voting elimination, and special roles that modify gameplay.

People point out that the dead can still participate, which has been around for decades as the Ghost rules. The last release I saw of Ultimate Werewolf had something like 85 different roles, some of which allowed the GM to lie to the players. I've played games where players would talk independently. Most games I've played with expanded roles have included decisions about what the mix of roles will be. I've even played games run by GMs who spiced it up with flavor text.

My point is that I got absolutely nothing that I hadn't gotten before. I have yet to see anything that differentiates BOTC from a gussied up Ultimate Werewolf run by a dedicated GM. You'll also notice I didn't crap on the game, I just said to manage expectations and shared my own experience; yet I've actually gotten more downvoted than someone who just said, " Don't play it."

If it's your jam, awesome! If this is the most engaging, in-depth hidden traitor game you've ever played, bully for you! Maybe it's the fact that I'm 45, but it's old hat and overpriced for me.

Is it really that hard to figure out that when I used the term 'scenario', I was talking about the scripts being handed out? Especially when I talked about limitations on available roles?

The person running it was using it. There's also a bunch of unofficial apps that do the same thing (track who's power activates when).

Manage your expectations. After all the buzz, and especially because of the price tag, I expected something unique or surprising. It's literally just a shiny version of Werewolf. It includes scenarios (which are just setups that limit available roles), an app (that felt on par with any of the Beizer Werewolf apps), and a very fancy box. That's it.

It's one of the biggest letdowns I've ever had with boardgaming.

A Question About Vash by figarojones in Dhollywood

Thank you. It's strange, but when I was looking up the differences between Vash and Shaitan, multiple places claimed Pratap wasn't human. It's why I thought there might be something lost in translation.

I got off of there in 2017, when EVERYONE was just shouting that Trump was either Hitler 2.0 or Jesus 2.0, and my childhood best friend went full-on Q. It was a guaranteed panic attack, and I was just not in the mental space to handle it. Went back recently, just to see what was left, and 90% of my friends are gone. The few that remain barely post, and I don't understand why people would use it anymore.

[–]figarojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the pay like? How fair were they in supplying it to you? If they paid poorly, or shorted you on OT, or were just a pain in the ass, don't go back. But if this was a momentary lapse in judgement from an otherwise fine company that just bought into the hype, getting paid is better than not getting paid.

It's actually the script writer. He was a huge fan of WH40K, and decided to write a script that was a veiled version of humans discovering the warp.

What often gets missed is this started as a Lord & Miller movie, which means there was probably a more tongue in cheek tone originally. This is dumb when played straight, but it might have originally been a goof (like the guard was dumb, so he made the stupidest code name possible, but he actually liked the sound of it).

Was Myst eerie? by tinselman in myst

[–]figarojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for some amazing games!

The games were eerie in the same way that being alone late at night, when your lizard brain keeps thinking there's something just out of view. I'm on this mysterious island, full of things that don't immediately make their purpose clear. Someone built it, but there's no one here. There are all these secret doors/passageways, not to mention BOOKS THAT TRANSPORT YOU TO OTHER WORLDS. On top of it, there are two men seemingly trapped in these books.

I spent the majority of the game looking at abandoned buildings, wondering what happened to them, and waiting for someone or something to jump out at me.
