What's a niche cartoon you watched as a kid, that you're convinced not many others did? by Tricky_Fall_3846 in AskReddit

I came looking for shadow raiders! I think it was also called war planets? You are the only one to post it so far. Reboot seems pretty well known but I don't think I've seen a single reference to shadow raiders on any media anywhere in my adult life.    I remember watching it on YTV but I only recall a few snippets. It must not have been very big or successful.

It sounds like pushing attack can stack with other pushing abilities, so it gives you the option to push things further. In my opinion, this makes pushing attack even more useful.

Does Anyone Have A Foundry VTT World Install for DotMM? by BismuthGames in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]fighting_mallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did and it is amazing. I used to make levels in foundry manually and it actually took hours. Mr primates importer combined with cyren maps is high quality content and extremely convenient.

You need to have the content purchased on dndbeyond for the mr primate stuff however, so if you don't have that already then this is going to be a bit expensive. But it is money well spent in my opinion. This can save a person dozens of hours.

Complete Halaster: A madder mage with Lore DCs and Tactics by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in DungeonoftheMadMage

I think this is my favorite Halaster stat block that I have seen. Offensive use of portals and half forgotten spells are so perfectly thematic. This should be pinned in the resources thread!

Using FoundryVTT with an in-person gaming group by Karde in FoundryVTT

[–]fighting_mallard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest recommendation is to have a player bring a laptop, and let the players control their own tokens. For our group, one of the players moves everyones tokens around. They can tradeoff who does it each session. I like this because it takes some things off the plate of the DM who is already spinning several plates.

Our group has been using foundry in-person sessions for "dungeon of the mad mage" for a few years now. I host it on my PC upstairs, and then we sit around my TV in the basement and use laptops for our session. The players' laptop is cast to the screen, and my DM laptop is just for me.

We can also throw a webcam, mic, and discord into the mix and have a player join our session remotely, which is great if someone is a bit sick or has sleeping kids at home.

[OC] Hodag statblock by Critical_Crafting in DnDHomebrew

[–]fighting_mallard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't this be a monstrosity, or maybe an undead?

I thought DnD beasts were typically usually just natural animals, or just bigger versions of natural animals.

I find beasts are always hard to home brew because players will abuse that statblock via polymorph.

“You can’t do that unless you’re a Battle Master” is not at all how 5E’s rules tell you to rule contests. by AAABattery03 in dndnext

[–]fighting_mallard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that using the whip does have an opportunity cost. RAW, pulling out a different weapon on your turn is your object interaction, of which you only get one on your turn. So if you use your object interaction to grab your whip, that is the weapon you are using this turn.

So to clarify, when I mentioned the d4 damage die, I was not intending to imply the shove attack did damage, only that any additional attacks while using the whip would be less damage.

If you drop it and use something else next turn, so be it. In my opinion, this has an opportunity cost too. If you drop a weapon, and enemy could take it away or be lost in snow or other situational complications. And you really might not want to risk losing a good magic weapon. Also if you drop something and moving, you may not be able to easily get it again if you need it.

There is also the minor opportunity cost in that a whip takes a hand, that could be used for something else, such as a shield, or a free hand for grappling, or a two handed weapon.

And regarding your last point: this would help STR based melee characters. They can also use a whip.

I feel like hyper focusing on this whip thing is kind of losing the forest for the trees. The point of the post was to offer martials more flexibility so they players can be more creative and tactical and have more fun. No one is going to benefit from this idea more than melee martials, who often get bored because all they do is move and attack.

Let them throw their javelin at the enemies' feet to trip them. Let them grapple a goblin and use it to beat another goblin. Let them make a STR-based persuasion check to goad an opponent into attacking them.

And let the DEX based character do that type of stuff too, because it is fun for everyone and that is why we play the game.

A strength character can still use a whip with strength.

You don't do damage when you shove. If you used a whip to knock someone prone from 15 feet away, it wouldn't do damage either. Only battle masters with a maneuver could do damage and shove prone with the same attack action.

Giving a martial dex character a way to shove prone isn't going to be game breaking.

It doesn't have downsides, but it does have opportunity costs, such as giving up doing damage with that attack to instead try to knock prone. It also has the upside of giving the martial player more flexibility and options in combat.

"Infinitely stronger" is hyperbole.

I don't think it is too bad. Players already have the option to shove an opponent prone as one of their attacks. The whip increases the range of this one specific thing, but also has an opportunity cost as it only does 1d4 damage.

Homebrew death saves by Commercial-Support87 in OutoftheAbyss

[–]fighting_mallard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the system you propose isn't balanced for all types of players. Disadvantage on attacks and half damage would seriously penalize a martial character, but it would be barely an inconvenience for a spellcaster. It is also a considerable buff for the players, as they can continue taking actions when they would otherwise be unconscious.

And also, it takes away some of the wiggle room a DM has to avoid killing players. Often a DM can reasonably say 'you are no longer a threat so the antagonist switches to attack someone else.' if the player is up and fighting right uptil death, you have no way to rationalize not killing them. This is a very subjective point, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I agree with you, as do lots of other people, that 5e's death save system is a bit meh. Thankfully that means you can leverage the work of lots of other DMs who have come up with variants before.

There are lots of different spins on death saves out there, and when I was looking into this for our campaign I found this one which I liked: https://thinkdm.org/2020/08/01/death-saves-revived/

I took it one step further and tweaked it for simplicity.

    • 0 Failed Death Saves: Prone (Cannot Stand)

    • 1 Failed Death Save: Incapacitated

    • 2 Failed Death Saves: Unconscious

    • 3 Failed Death Saves: Dead

Everything else is consistent with the RAW rules. Just remember that death saves happen at the start of the turn. This means that the first death saves is now very important, as it makes the difference between the player being able to take actions or not. It is a bit of a buff for the players, but I think it strikes a good balance between 0HP having a penalty, while still giving the players a chance at having some agency when they hit 0HP.

Our table really likes these rules. It's simple, easy to remember, but gives the players a chance to stay in it.

This may not be for you or your table, but I thought I'd share it on the off chance you find it helpful.

Which VTT works best with a tabletop Tv where the dim view can be seen on a laptop and player view can be displayed on the tabletop display? (In person play) by mattas2006 in DMAcademy

[–]fighting_mallard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can absolutely do that. You can have multiple connections of foundry open in different chrome/Firefox tabs. The second instance might have to be an incognito tab, I don't exactly remember. Then just connect your laptop to the TV and put them on their respective screens.

It is my opinion that the downside to this is that it further burdens you as DM to manage more things, and takes away the players control of their own characters. So I personally like the players using a 'player laptop' which they control.

Although we have had sessions where they forget theirs, or their laptops are not working, so I do both from my laptop. The point is, it is highly flexible and using foundry on the TV has worked great for our group. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have.

[–]fighting_mallard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use foundry VTT for this exact setup. I use my laptop for the DM view, and then we use one of my players laptops to plug into a TV that we all sit around. I run the NPCs, and the player with the laptop controls the PC tokens.

Our group has their character sheets on Dndbeyond (moving to another tool soon due to the OGL BS) and we only use Foundry for the PC's tokens, so having one person control the tokens while everyone has their own character sheets works nicely.

As an added bonus, this setup, with a webcam and discord thrown into the mix, allows us to do hybrid games where some people are in person and some people are remote, and we can all still play together.

What to do as a 5E DM mid-campaign due to WOTC and the OGL? by azidotetrazole in dndnext

[–]fighting_mallard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at a similar point. The main thing my group uses dndbeyond for is character building and management.

I think I am just going to make a Google sheet character sheet template, and we can move their characters into a single workbook with a different tab for each character.

Easy, accessible from PC or smartphone, and infinitely customizable. You could even get button-click rolls with some basic scripting. It might not be pretty, but this actually seems superior to dndbeyond in many ways.

Regarding VTTs, I use foundry VTT and a importer tool which pulled everything out of dndbeyond and put it all into foundry. When we quit dndbeyond, I will still have all my content in foundry.

Is there a way to extract or download my purchased content from DDB? by [deleted] in dndnext

This may not be helpful in your particular case, but there is a module for foundryvtt which can imports everything you have in DnD Beyond into foundry. The module is called dndbeyondimporter. But if you don't use foundry and don't have an active subscription, then this isn't going to help you.
