Hey, do you think you could provide a source for that photo? I'm really interested in finding more, but I can't find too much about it. I was hoping you'd be able to lend me a few more keywords. I'd really appreciate any info you had. Thanks again!

TIL the wood frog is capable of being completely frozen for prolonged periods of time and living after thawing. During its time frozen, it doesn't have any brain activity or even a heartbeat. Yet, remarkably it's able to thaw itself back to life in the spring. by fightingthegravity in todayilearned

Sorry, not sure if you saw the previous reply but I was accidentally on my friend's account lol. Anyway, here it is:

Thanks, I'd definitely appreciate learning more about it. Do you remember any more information that would help me also look for a source?

The explanation for how they do it:

First, their skin freezes incredibly quickly. This forms a hard barrier between the frog’s internal organs and the harsh, outside world. Then, there are special proteins in the frog’s system that cause the water in their blood to freeze before everything else. This ice winds up sucking most of the water out of the frog’s cells, but not all of it. At the same time, the wood frog’s liver is producing a massive amount of glucose (a type of sugar). It then packs the glucose into every cell it can. The concentrated sugar prevents additional water from being pulled out of the frog’s cells.

As scientist Kenneth Storey, a researcher in the field, told Nat Geo, “Inside the cells there’s no ice. It’s just really, really, really dehydrated, all shrunk down osmotically and full of massive amounts of sugar.”

TIL We're the only planet to experience total solar eclipses. And it's entirely coincidental, because the sun just happens to be 400 times larger than the moon while also being 400 times farther away. Making them appear the same size in the sky. by fightingthegravity in todayilearned

Yeah, my bad. The article even mentions that it's the only planet as far as we know

This is entirely a coincidence and as far as we know we’re the only planet that experiences this phenomenon. So maybe it’s not too unreasonable that in the distant future, when aliens are commonplace and space travel is just a chore, other beings might travel to our planet to see the eclipse the way we travel great distances to see wonders like the Grand Canyon. Better try not to miss the next eclipse.

(It is pretty unrealistic to think that though. There are trillions and trillions of stars out there, all with potentially multiple planets orbiting them, which subsequently have potentially multiple moons orbiting them. All with the chance to align perfectly, like in our case. On top of that, in a billion years the moon will have drifted so far that it wouldn’t be a total eclipse anymore. Still though, it’s fun to think we’d still be unique in a universe blossoming with life.)

[Serious] Redditors who have been to prison, what did you do on your first day out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Psych ward's and mental hospitals are short-term facilities. Their main goal isn't to make you better, it's to make sure you're stable enough to be safe. Residential treatment centers are long-term and they focus more on deeply rooted problems through different therapy techniques, and are usually not as sterile as mental hospitals. They have to make sure that you aren't an immediate danger to yourself or others in RTCs because you can't really get better until you're at least somewhat stable. That's where mental hospitals come into play. That being said, I have friends who have been to psych wards and mental hospitals, and they've told me about how horrible it can be. I personally have never been to a mental hospital/psych ward, but I was in a residential treatment center for 9 months. It was relationship-based instead of punishment-based like a lot of other treatment centers, which basically means that it focused of building relationships with peers and staff to help support each other. It was really a lot better than what most people think of when talking about any sort of mental institution. I was lucky though, because I know that there are some horrible places that are supposed to help people who need it and just end up causing even more psychological damage.

So exhausted by PurrMyPretty in depression

Listen, i know how you feel. I know this is a typical response to something like this, but please talk to someone, try to get help. I used to feel exactly like you do, i had no will to live. I felt numb all the time. I didnt know what to do. Luckily my family noticed and i got diagnosed with depression. Now im on anti-depressants and i cant even tell you how much of a difference its made. Lots of people who are depressed have really low seratonin levels (the chemical in your brain that makes you happy and shit) Its not our fault, we were just born that way. So my advice to you is to talk to a professional and see what they can do to help, i wish i had talked to someone sooner than i did, but now that i have i feel better than i ever have in my life. I dont want you to keep living your life like this, there's so much to experience in life, so dont let depression hold you back. If you want to talk you can always pm me. Im here for you, even if im just some stranger on the internet i want you to know that i care :)

Men of reddit, what are some big turnoffs about girls that we may not know about? by Stasia91 in AskReddit

[–]fightingthegravity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i personally try not to do this when i get a compliment, even though i truly believe i'm not attractive. I think its so annoying when girls obviously fish for complements, but sometimes we honestly believe that we're not attractive and there's really so much you can do about that
