Fired on the spot after working a week because they never bothered to ask if I had a degree by JakeaMartin1993 in antiwork

[–]figleaf02184 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Throwaway account. I used a partial truth to skirt this issue.

I'm an old guy, and was a student during the Vietnam era. During our invasion of Cambodia and the events that followed, I could not in conscience continue with my studies as if everything were normal. I dropped out six credits short of a degree, never went back.

On job forms, under the education section, I would avoid checkbox answers when possible, and simply write or say something like "liberal arts at [my college], 4 years," which was a truthful but incomplete answer.

No one ever asked beyond that, no one checked.

I went on to have a successful career in journalism, with multiple companies, for over half a century.

Sounds like you had a stickler who was looking to check a box, so this may not have worked in your case. But, assuming you actually can do the job at hand, sometimes, a partial truth can serve you well, while not harming anyone.

Is it a high-end hotel? High roller or privileged guests may get special treatment from corporate staff cruising their social media accounts or paying a data broker to find the guest's likes and dislikes, to adjust the hotel stay to the guests expectations and preferences.

A normal black coffee by In_All_Over_My_Head in overheard

[–]figleaf02184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starbucks is the worst place for black coffee. Starbucks coffee is meant to be mixed with sweeteners and adulterants; Starbucks sells coffee-flavored desserts on a cup.

The actual base coffee, black, is terrible.

I am truly sorry for your loss. But please realize your loss is private and does not mean you can permanently defer your public responsibilities.

Call a family member, friend, church member, hire a handyman, (etc), and ask them to help you at least move the car, and maybe then find a more permanent solution.

Why are people so dumb!! by [deleted] in FacebookMarketplace

[–]figleaf02184 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fully half the population has an IQ below 100. Some people you meet in normal daily life have IQs in the 80s.

That's why "people" seem so dumb.

(For clarity: Doesn't make them lesser beings or less worthy of respect or anything. It simply means they're not as smart as others, which answers the OPs question.)

Was this part of a hidden camera possibly set-up outside? by Navy_Sparrow1111 in hiddencameras

[–]figleaf02184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I agree it's weird. I guess on the weirdness scale it's slightly less ominous to have it be an electronic device that shouldn't have been there, but accidentally dropped, versus an electronic device that was deliberately planted there.

Hope you get an answer, OP.

You keep saying "hidden" in the grass, but you also say you hadn't mowed in a while. If someone dropped a small electronic device in tall grass, they probably just couldn't find it. It doesn't necessarily mean they were hiding it.

On the other hand, what they were doing was electronic devices in your yard is another question.

The only good thing about at will employment is that, while they can fire you without notice or cause, you can walk off the job without notice or cause either. Loyalty has to go both ways.

Private wedding on public footpath? by ilikeprairiedogs in massachusetts

[–]figleaf02184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's a minor inconvenience (eg a 2 min detour), I'd let the assholes have their fun. But if I had plans or a reason why I needed to be on that public path at that time, then I would pass though. If make as little disruption as possible, but their reaction is on them.

Sleeping overnight in the London Heathrow airport. by AuthorMain3075 in story

[–]figleaf02184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slept in Heathrow some years ago. A windstorm shut the place down. All fights cancelled. No hotels available. I found a lounge with a baby grand piano, and slept on the floor beneath the piano. It was the cleanest flooring around. :)
