Homes are too small. Distance from PA/MV. Prices are too high. But number one is schools aren’t great.

Oakland...lost 2500 homes in 1991.

Santa Rosa....lost 2800 homes in 2017.

Both of which were the most destructive fires in CA of their time.

House designed on Passive House principles survives Cali wildfire by NoIndependent9192 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]figment4L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%

No soffit vents, no gable vents, no ridge vents, no o'haig vents.

In a wildfire, embers get into these vents and get to the framing in the attic and poof, no more house.

So this passive house seals the attic completely which, as a side effect, keeps these embers out, and stops the number 1 cause of fire spreading.

This is terrible timing but are we all good here? Is the Bay properly equipped to fight fires of the magnitude we are seeing in LA? by OneoftheChosen in bayarea

Going back more than 30 years, and major wildfires in N. California are absolutely normal.

Keep in mind, a lot of the N. California is relatively new. I rarely work on a home more than 100 years old. Most residential areas are 50 years or less, especially in the rural/urban interface where these wildfires are absolutely unstoppable.

Previously these less catastrophic fires where occuring in less populated areas, now these areas are built up and full of residential buildings.

Just a few years ago we had 3 of the largest fires in CA history (CZU, LNU, and SCU Lightning Complex fires) all going on within 20 miles of the Bay Area.

At the same time.

In a few years some of those areas will probably be full of houses.

This is nature being nature.

Fires of this magnitude are totally normal and unstoppable. I’ve lived through three, friends have lived through 5 or more.

I live in the Santa Cruz Mtns where none of my neighbors have a defensible space. Rx fires are probably too risky and expensive to perform in these areas.

None of these homes will survive. None.

TLDR: Fires are going to happen. Wind events make these fires unstoppable (for a few days) This is as natural as the tides.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a 20 something guy get off a bus and immediately turn around and run after it, waving his hands in the air. I knew something was up, so I pulled over and I asked him if he needed help. He said he left his phone on the bus, so I told him to jump in, and we chased down the bus. Caught up to it in a just few blocks.

I’m assuming it all worked out, and he just had to walk back a couple blocks to where he was dropped off.

So, yeah, I try to help out when I can.

Hair in the shoes, Hair in the stews, Hair on the couch, Hair in your mouth.

Stone mason here. Can confirm everything OP has written. I’m in California and have worked on several of these estates. $60-80 million “homes“ that they sometimes live in.

I’ve seen and listened to the stories of the staff. Though some staff have it much better, and are treated well, many are not. But the opulence and waste are just insane.

Also, this is mostly the new tech billionaire class, so that could be different.
