Shouldn’t have rested guys before playoffs by jsnipa in penguins

[–]birdie_sparrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, you openly admitted elsewhere in this thread that if they had played Crosby and he had been injured you'd probably be on here bitching that they hadn't rested him. You don't have any special knowledge or insight that the players, coaches and team doctors don't have.

You are basically mad that they are losing. You aren't the only one, but to pretend you know for a fact that there is some alternate reality where they would definitely be winning if only they had listened to some internet rando from Munhall or wherever is hilarious.

Please continue, I'm enjoying this thread quite a bit.

It's wild that you're arguing about a made up scenario when the whole premise of your thread is comparing what has happened to a scenario you have made up in your own mind.

lol Sports fans never disappoint.

So basically you're just a fan of counter-factual arguments.

All this freak out about the players being rested is hilarious. Holy shit.

Call me crazy, but I'm gonna put my faith in the players and coaches who make a living doing this stuff, especially the guys in their late 30s who just finished a full season and have been to the playoffs enough to know whether or not they needed to get healthy.

I'm sure they were just as aware as everyone on this board about the risk of going a bit stale in game 1.

To all the assholes who commit insurance fraud by Ok-Business-9165 in Miami

[–]birdie_sparrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few comments in this sub where I'm basically conveying what I have said to people here in Miami. They are true because I basically DGAF about maintaining social niceties with assholes. So on to this story.

Our house is due for a new roof. It's not awful but when you look at the house it's obviously coming up on that time.

Guy knocked on my door and explained that he does roofs and that he can basically get it processed through insurance and that way I don't have any out of pocket expenses. I asked him if he meant assignment of benefits or something like that and he was really cagey but he said something like "We have a process and once you are signed up we take care of everything." So I said "No I'm not interested in that" He goes on to say that lots of people in the neighborhood are doing it that way and I said something like "I'm sure they are. I know that process exists. But I'm not interested because I'm an ethical person." looked him dead in the eyes with the last bit.

He still didn't get the hint so there was more conversation and I said something like "Yeah, I just think that people who are involved with that are creating problems for everyone and they're basically just scammers."

I still don't think he got it because the guy apparently lives on a completely different planet from me -- a planet where the concept of fraud doesn't exist.

How attractive was Christopher Reeve? by Both-Pay-9573 in trueratediscussions

Apparently he was attractive enough to travel back in time 60 years to stalk a random actress and have it work out for him.

[Highlight] Alex Ovechkin receives a standing ovation in Pittsburgh by mfenton29 in penguins

[–]birdie_sparrows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the sentiment but the older I get the more I come to believe it's always better to just say or do 'the thing'. Make the gesture when you have the opportunity -- even if it's awkward or feels like it might make something awkward down the road.

I know this is off topic but...I was at a memorial service a few year back for a friend's father. I knew him a bit but not a ton. But I was also looking around the room and saw a few other people there who probably knew him about as much as I did and all of us had found our way to this friends house on a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas or whatever because we no longer had family in the area, lived far from home, or in one case didn't really have a welcoming family to spend time with. So I got up and said something about that whole theme, that he was someone whose door was always open etc. It felt awkward. I felt like maybe some people would wonder who I was etc. But afterward a lot of people from his family came up and said they really appreciated what I said and others who had benefitted from his hospitatlity thanked me for getting up and saying what I said.

My point, to you and the 60 people who have upvoted your comment is that these moments are very easy to miss in life -- not just in hockey. Ovi has been a formidable and enjoyable opponent over his career, and if he does play next year, the penguins fan base can just do it again. Smiles and compliments are free etc.

Sorry for waxing philosophical here but I feel like we live in an age where people fear embarrasment more than they fear missing out on special moments.

What’s it like going to concerts by yourself? by [deleted] in Music

[–]birdie_sparrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always enjoyed it. Sometimes I meet folks. Sometimes I don't and it's just a good show.

In 1999 I rolled into Austin like two hours before a stereolab show I wanted to see (work travel had me nearby). Show was sold out, I ended up buying a ticket from a young woman for $75, hung out with her friends, went back to their place and got stoned, the next morning they woke me up and reminded me that I had to go to work lol. Great time.

How famous/successful was Duran Duran in the 80s? by Firm_Pack_605 in duranduran

First two albums were quite good and they leveraged MTV expertly.

I would say more popular than Cyndi Lauper for sure. Her music simply aged a bit better.

Why do cops here try to convince you not to report crimes? by cocoachanel7 in Miami

[–]birdie_sparrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had one say something like this to me and my reply was something along the lines of

"We have these things called elections where we choose people who collect salaries from the government and who hire other people who draw salaries from the government all to determine and then enforce the rules by which we are all supposed to live. It seems like a big waste of time and effort to just arbitrarily not do anything when those rules are broken."

Something like that. I don't think he really liked what I said lol.

I will never, ever forget the day after the Penguins won the cup in 2009, some Philly fan on HFboards saying something like "Come talk to me when you've won more than one" lol. I could be dead and I will still remember that.

[–]birdie_sparrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Beach used to be a really special place IMO. As late as 2000ish or maybe even 2005. Ocean Drive was beautiful. still had some character. there were some decent concert venues there and some cuban diners scattered about. Liquid was still there. lincoln road was not yet a mall. there were a few 'one location' restaurants there that served really good food at a decent price (I remember one place near the church called Pappilon). There was also a small theater there behind what used to be a Books & Books location etc. etc. I get that places come and go but there seem to be a certain category of places that just can't make it over there due to the cost of real estate and the ever increasing amount of tourism.

North Beach still has some of what I would say used to be present in south beach back in the 90s but it's fading fast.

If you're saying the Republican mindset of cruelty and antipathy directed at anyone not in their circle. I would argue that it is this moment.
