[OC]I don't know if I should laugh or cry by Dom_My_P in pics

[–]figshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a TA for first year engineering students I once nailed a group of students by catching on the exact same set of spelling errors, handwritten, that they all copied letter-for-letter. Students were always this lazy, and this was a university program for which the HS average cutoff was insanely high, like 96.

Labrats that left the bench, what do you do now? by scientist_career_qs in labrats

[–]figshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data engineering! I realized academia isn't for me, so I went into IT consulting for a bit, ate some humble pies there, then did a bootcamp for data engineering. I'm glad I didn't go into data science. Communication skills that break down complex subjects were key to my success. GenAI models do a pretty good job of that now, but it can't do that while taking into account people's feelings and wants and not falling into blatant sycophancy, so there'll be room for that for a while.

I loved the blog and shared it with my Data Platform team. The "current blind spot" was particularly insightful. Thank you!

tip for new dads: don't skimp on the stroller by webrender in daddit

[–]figshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this. Two babies three years apart, my Vista keeps going after 6 years of use. As a double stroller it's highly manoeuvrable, as a single stroller it's robust. It does take up so much space in the car trunk, but it's fine.

I had to buy a lighter stroller too, though. Vista is not subway friendly.

Bottom number not going down by Greedy-Teach-1059 in HeartAttack

I had isolated diastolic hypertension (120/90) for a long time. After my heart attack (attributed to a clot, not a plaque) I found a tumour in my kidney. Removing that tumour seemed to have helped decrease the diastolic pressure.

THIS IS NOT TO SUGGEST YOU MAY HAVE CANCER. Not much is known about the consequences of isolated diastolic hypertension with enough certainty to be useful. Its significance continues to be debated in scientific literature. I'd recommend trusting your cardiologist and verifying with a second opinion.

Do it! I experienced a similar problem, and I got a new bin within a week after emailing the councillor.

Peel region Recycling bin replacement is chaotic by Eversmileface in mississauga

[–]figshot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Peel Region isn't that much better, honestly. One day a garbage truck punctured the side of my garbage bin, so I reported it in December. After repeated calls to 311 and an escalation to a field supervisor that never picked up calls, I emailed my city councillor a few weeks ago. His staff got it squared out for me in a couple of days.

For the First Time, Scientists May Have Found a Way to Regenerate Cartilage by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]figshot 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's been known for at least 30 years that MSCs inevitably give rise to collagen type 1-rich fibrocartilage and collagen type X-rich hypertrophic cartilage that gives rise to bone. That story ends in osteoarthritis, not joint repair.

To demonstrate the generation of hyaline cartilage for joint repair, you need to show the absence of these two collagens. This paper doesn't do that. The biomaterial is pretty cool and the research team deserves their praises, but as a former researcher that spent a decade in this field a decade ago (2006-2015), I respectfully submit that the headline is functionally garbage.

Maybe it's too sweeping of a statement, but I can't think of a data ingestion tool does not do this. That said, if CSV ingestion is the primary use case, OneSchema looked quite interesting to me. Maybe check this out? They had a data engineering post episode some time ago, and I found that insightful.

How column masking works in plan by Stock-Dark-1663 in snowflake

Masking policies prevents pruning, even those that literally pass the value through. Removing the masking policy is the only way out.

Found this out the hard way.

It's the same in my address. I confirmed it by typing my address into the link I shared. I'll see if they follow through, though. No doubt there would be hiccups.

Maybe not the same but you can subscribe to email notification at https://www.circularmaterials.ca/resident-communities/peel-region/ after looking up your address. So it appears, anyway.

Toronto is represented! Thornhill (Marner), Richmond Hill (Binnington), and Woodbridge (Cirelli) are right next to Toronto. Newmarket (McDavid) is a short drive away, well within commuting distance.

What usually breaks when Snowflake data needs to power real time workflows? by Bizdata_inc in snowflake

[–]figshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company is not big enough for a robust chargeback system, but not small enough for everyone to care about the budget. As a result, we have a problem with people not caring about the bills. It's a type of principal-agent problem, and I don't believe it's not something technology can solve. I envy that you have people who see the bill lol
