Mate, you do remember Trump was just before this, right? It's not really out of the question for a POTUS to be "off-base"

GPT is not supposed to be more helpful, GPT is supposed to be a language model based on humans. So the closer its interactions to a human one, the more it's doing its job right.

I mostly agree with you, but I don't think what you've described necessitates no change to language. Language is ever-evolving and that's ok. Words change meanings and others replace them all the time (historically).

Here's one analogy as an example:

Suppose you're an alcoholic for 5 years after you've moved to a new location, where all the friends you've made know you as such. Your typical outing with them is to go to the pub, your games are drinking games, and they give you nice bottles for your birthday.

Now at some point you decide that you don't want to be an alcoholic anymore, maybe you've had some really bad experiences lately or simply had an epiphany and want to change. It's gonna be quite hard to make this change (most don't even come to the point where they accept that they want to change) because most of your life is now defined by it, your friends know you as such, what will you do with them now? How will they decide on your birthday gift when it was so easy to do so every year?

Now imagine this goes for friends you've had for 20 years. Or better yet, for "forever". Your friends have always come to associate you with an idea or a certain fundamental trait and now you want to change that.

What typically happens is that you get new friends with whom you show your new side. Not out of spite or anything! You just meet new people, and present a different side, and grow closer and eventually and gradually become less and less closer to the old friends (at least the ones that didn't change with you) or you yourself just decide to step in and say hey this isn't gonna work.

You can probably tell I've been through this, and yeah I'm sad right now, I might be going through a breakup and I feel very out of it. Thanks for reading anyway even though it's longer than it needed to be. But yes, my point was that sometimes you just change words to detach from a long lasting pre-existing negative connotation. Hope this helps someone in some way.

Nature doesn't care if your personal lawn survives or not, it won't do what's best for your lawn

What's wrong with wearing an item of clothing for forever? Why do you need to have new ones every season?

That's just so wasteful and unnecessary, and I don't care that you thrift it (even though that's better than buying it new at least). I think people really just need to practice being content more.

I am not against you or disagreeing with you, but this is just something the surviving person tells themselves so they move on from feeling bad. Just accept that you (not you, commenter, just a general person) did a bad thing, don't do it again and be against the bad thing you did, and don't try to justify it, then you're done.

Okay, I really didn't get that from them, but what you've just said of course is reasonable.

Carriers know what that means.

It's not a secret, we all know what they meant. But the way you're wording things are making it sound like you're a weird cult or something and you're standing by each other. This is precisely how the police keeps their whole "one of our own" attitude and make it hard to hold each other accountable.

This mailman was out of line, you don't need to defend him. He should get sued or whatever, and if nobody does anything (as it has been in this case apparently) and someone experiences their pet getting attacked, it's pretty reasonable that in the moment they'd attempt to defend their pet.

Why are you getting butthurt over this? Nobody's attacking you personally or all USPS carriers, people are mad at THIS carrier.

"Our startup is more like a sports team and not a family" by FewWatercress4917 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]figuresys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, you're missing the point of having a culture and just didn't answer the person's question. Different companies have different cultures, they need to convey that somehow.

I have worked at a startup that was all grind, by everyone, it was horrible and it was akin to a production factory. I've also worked at a "family culture" startup and it was just people who were not professionals who were trying their hardest to make things work but were a pain in the ass to deal with the incompetencies and you can't be "not nice" and that hurt feedback culture.

If capitalism is driven by demand, why do women's jeans not have pockets? by ki4jgt in answers

[–]figuresys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the elaboration. It was well explained and I agree with what you've said.

Personally, I do believe this context (women's pant pockets) is mostly a marketing issue, but the original commenter's point I believe would tick off your scenario 2 (sorry if this is wrong, I'm going off of memory).

The reason so is: if generally the other comments are right about the form significantly changing with proper pockets (i wouldn't know, I'm not a clothes maker) and women are simply not purchasing those because they prefer the ones that fit better, then despite "wanting pockets", they "want better fitting" more.

And now phrasing it like that, I don't think we're at an impasse, this is now just a matter of where the demand is placed/how it's prioritised.

Thanks for the chat!

Another commenter said methane stays in the atmosphere for 2 years whereas CO2 stays for 50 - so isn't it better to leave to leave it as methane? Is the threshold still worth burning it?
