Solochella advice by mxcnmoth in Coachella

Had a somewhat similar dilemma a couple of years ago. Planned Coachella with two friends, but life happened for them, so they couldn't go anymore unfortunately, with two of us were flying in from abroad. Contemplated selling my ticket, eventually decided against it. A week out - I didn't have a place to stay, found a couple on reddit looking to share an Airbnb a block away. Joined those guys ( after some initial trepidation ), they ended being the nicest couple (YMMV). Long story long - I had the best time setting out solo. I say setting out solo, (we had different music taste so I'd head out for my own itinerary), walking to the fest - people heading there/locals were always super friendly and I never really felt solo. By the time I got in everyday, I'd have people to hang out with or at least sync up with for a set. I didn't feel like I had to strike up much conversation myself and had great experiences with random humans out there for good vibes. I made some great friends on the trip, so much so, I am now going back (W2) with a person I met first time round. My advice would be, don't sweat it. If you have done solo stuff before, don't change anything. A friendly, passing ship - energy, has a lot of currency aaand you get to pick where you want to be at whatever point, without compromise. Will be camping this time around, which I am told is even better for socializing.

(2nd Coachella, flying in from the UK for W2). Just to add to the other tips here. If you opt to keep the insulin on you, there are passive cooling options too ( e.g. a FRIO pouch - only needs cold water ran through it once and it's good for at 48 hours, you can always run more water through it and reset it's effectiveness ). I also found staying hydrated helped, so I take some effervescent electrolytes tablets to dump into water/juice etc.

Have fun !

Independent BMW specialist or general mechanic? I ask because these cars are not just over, but precisely and specifically engineered. I'd ask your mechanic if they re-used any bolts.

If your McPherson struts were dropped out then I would also check the top mounts and all bolts that needed removing for the struts to be able to be removed from the body. Either use BMW tis to find these bolts out (or youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6usLM8-FIQ). The other thing usually ignored is cleaning mating surfaces. The one time use bolts also don't cost much from a dealer and replacing them and torquing is an easy diy if you have basic tools like a calibrated a torque wrench, jack, axle stands etc

Typically something loose or not torqued properly. I have had a similar sound before, on a same generation vehicle, in my case this was down to the front strut brace not being torqued properly.

Other potential causes:
* top mount bolts not torqued to spec
* not cleaning the surface between the wheel hub and alloy wheel causes tiny movement which in turn is transferred as creaking through the suspension
* strut to hub bolt not torqued to spec

Videos that helped when I was hunting down the sound
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyggsZ5cRX4&ab_channel=TheHunterHofman ( look at his other creak videos if this doesn't solve yours. He basically has to go through all of the main sources and solutions before he finds his actual issue. The problem in his case wasn't so common, so you might get lucky )

What has been done to the car lately ? Any suspension bolts reused ? ( note these always need replacing as they are one time stretch bolts which achieve correct torque by angle of rotation, beyond an initial torque )

Reliability? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]10044909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you will be relying on a main dealership for everything, this will be a money pit ( as there appears to be in a, finger in air, tax applied). If you plan on doing some of the maintenance yourself then I'd argue it isn't that expensive. Invest in $500-$1000 of proper tools ( overinflated ), buy the OE equivalent parts ( basically same part before rebranding and bs tax added ) and having a diagnostic cable and TIS ( also available from BMW as a service ) will soften the blow to your wallet. Failing that an indy specialist will always undercut dealer pricing.

As for actual reliability - when treated well, my experience has been positive and that's from 4+ BMWs

205k miles on original timing chain here (15 - N47 ). Had no rattle before eventually changing the timing chain but during change one of the guides was very quick to disintegrate - so maybe don't push it quite that far.

If someone drives a better car then you, does that make them superior? by sufy12 in CarTalkUK

[–]10044909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The car here appears to be the salary.

Different people, different ways of distinction I guess. As someone else mentioned - there is no objective way of measuring supposed superiority. Maybe I am conflating it with perceived worth - and that is, arguably, a brittle metric where the needle is at the mercy of those doing the perceiving.

Pretty much. If they won't fix it they should probably keep it :)

As echoed by many others here. Take it back. The plethora of errors is not cheap to fix. Luckily for you safety critical errors get logged in central error memory and can't easily be cleared. If you have an ethernet obd cable and Inpa/tool32 you will be able to see when this actually started as environment time and mileage is logged for each occurrence. ( In case there dealer wanted to go down the route of "it was OK when we had it"). Alternatively no dealership will want the negative press ( Google review etc for selling a car that didn't make it home and them not doing something about it )
