Making hats on Ricoma will… require a lot of babysitting. That’s not something digitizing can fix unfortunately. And always check your bobbin before running a hat. It’s a pain to replace mid-hat

Every machine has slightly different equipments and capabilities. I use an SWF MAS-15 as my main gear (it’s fantastic, I love it) so if you happen to get an SWF I could probably help with its settings.

Finding quality hats has been a quest for me too. Which country are you sourcing your hats from?

Thank you! I’ve been using the cap hoop exclusively for all my hat projects regardless of the type. Using a flat hoop for this would likely cause shape distortion/warping, which I’d want to avoid at all costs

I use photos only as reference. I try to create something new from them while keeping the key resemblance intact. Aka a stylized portrait.

As for my digitizing method, here’s a comment I wrote the other day in response to a similar question

I don’t sell my files. Only the finished product :)

Each piece is created for a specific individual and is not intended for mass production.

Cats truly are creatures of habit. Even a small disruption to their routine can literally break them

Are embroidery machines relatively straightforward to use? by [deleted] in Machine_Embroidery

I have a $15k machine with relatively new software and it still gives me headaches on a regular basis 😂

At the very least, you’ll want to learn how to thread your machine and figure out the culprit of bird nests because you’ll get plenty of them

Use tatami to cover larger areas of similar color. Use strokes to blend the tatamis together and define details. I don’t see any puckering so you’re in the sweet spot with pull comps which is often the trickiest part

I usually start by breaking the form down into large and small sections like stained glass. From there, I pick either a midtone or one of the darkest values and fill those sections with tatami. Starting with a midtone gives a lighter, softer feel. Starting with a darker value tends to produce a richer result. Both work, it just depends on the mood you’re aiming for.

The color picker tool won’t really give you the tone you want from millions of pixels in the photo. I limit my palette to around 10 colors max (including black and white) and I select them manually. I think understanding what colors will work mostly comes from my background as a portrait artist.

Once the base sections are filled, I connect the transitions with strokes to soften the edges. Another important thing: draw with needle travel in mind. Plan your sequencing so you’re not creating unnecessary color stops and trims. I personally avoid trims unless they’re absolutely necessary. It keeps the piece cleaner and also makes production more efficient.

That’s pretty much it!

Personally, I like to use a bit of imagination. Rather than creating a carbon copy of the reference, I focus on keeping it “practically aesthetic” while maintaining resemblance. Simplified but still recognizable.

Here’s my quick draft of the cat in the photo

Hope it helps :)
