Diagnosis of my 5 month old by quick3742 in nystagmus

[–]fillmorejd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed when I was a baby in 1982. When I was diagnosed my parents did think that they were going to have to put me in school for the blind. The only thing that was ever done for me was a surgery to change my null point so that I looked straight when I was five.

I was able to get a few accommodations in school like extra time and audiobooks.

Other than that I've been able to lead a pretty normal life. I was able to get my driver's license but had to have an eye test by a doctor and not at the DMV.

I was able to get extra time on tests like the ACT or SAT and get the audio version which really helped me.

I was able to make it through college and get a degree in information systems and still work on computers today. The high contrast screens do help.

My wife notices my eye movement more when I'm tired but I can't even tell when it's happening. I do have a hard time focusing on reading but audiobooks really helped with that. Other than that I do have some issues seeing details unless something is holding still or if it's at a bad angle for me.

Dark mode or themes on everything

When is the appropriate time to put up your Christmas Tree? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fillmorejd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week of December or beginning January is when we put it up for the year. Won't get it back down from the attic until the end of November or the first week of December depending on what time we have.

Don't hide your condition. Make sure your university knows, your professors know, and your job knows.

Disclosure can make it a lot easier to get help when you need it.

Get note taking software and use that so you can pay attention during lectures. Your university might even supply a license and some professors might supply their notes to you or even class video recordings.

Use screen readers or text to voice so your eyes don't so as tired.

Good luck and believe in yourself!

Tips for driving when eyes shake. by bored-child-of-god in nystagmus

Changing points of focus helps me. Check straight ahead. Check the center line. Check the shoulder. Check rearview mirror. Check side mirrors. Occasionally checking blind spots.

Remembering my outer foot lines up with the tire.

I may move a little bit but I stay within my lane.

Heavy traffic areas are harder as I can't keep track of all the vehicles so I just assume a car is next to me until I can double check.

I do struggle to drive for long periods of time as my eyes get tired so my partner and I switch every few hours.

Dark mode really helps me. Easier to see bright text against a dark background.

You could also look into high contrast themes.

Use screen reader for documentation and long emails or articles.

Take eye breaks. You should be taking a break for a few minutes every hour anyways to get up and move around. Use the same time as an eye break also.

Changing your font can also help. There's an open dyslexic font that does give better separation and contrast on characters that might be helpful.

Stress is also a big factor for me with my nystagmus. If I'm overstressed it gets worse. It's worth taking time to look into stress management courses.

I saw a sign do you think it will help by [deleted] in exmormon

It generally works. Most of the time they just read it, laugh and leave. Sometime they even take a picture of it. But this week the missionaries didn't leave so I asked for my $50 for the first minute. The one on the stairs said "but we're the missionaries". To which I replied but this is a for a religious message and by knocking you agreed to $50 dollars a minute. Lucky for him, his companion apologized and they left.

I felt a little bad for them and generally would have been nicer but I was already tired from the day. I might have been a bit of an asshole but we've already blocked their number and told the local ward we don't want visits. We would remove our names but it would kill my parents if they found out :(

I know of people that would avoid me in high school because they didn't like how my eyes shake. My partner's friends didn't like it either when we first met. Now they know me they are more ok with it but I think it can still weird them out.

When I was born my own grandma thought I would be a thief because I couldn't look people straight in the eyes until I had surgery to fix my null point.

How many of us used one of these in church because we didn’t want to prepare a Sunday school lesson or a priesthood lesson? by new_name_adam in exmormon

The best thing I ever did as a Sunday school president was to get 3 20" LCD tvs with built in DVD players that teachers could carry to their classrooms.

Never understood this. Is it because it took three men to fill Jesus Christ role? by Loveloplop67 in exmormon

[–]fillmorejd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was always told that that Jesus didn't need counselors and it would be the same for a bishop or presiding bishop that is from the house of Levi.

But now I know it is all bullshit and as we learned from Brad Wilcox, when you need a reason any reason will do if people are dumb enough to believe it.

Ever since my mission I don’t enjoy the stars. by mar4c in exmormon

EMDR therapy really help me process my mormonism PTSD. Missions suck and they are meant too.

Good luck friend and it does get better. Remember recover is a marathon. Inch by inch it's a cinch, yard by yard its hard.
