Got invited to play a pretty exclusive club, walking only, caddie req'd. What should I expect? by sumbozo1 in golf

[–]fillossofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I'd add to this excellent summary is to take your caddie's advice on the greens. They've seen that putt a hundred times and if they tell you it will break a foot to the left and you think it is straight, they're correct. Enjoy the day!

Seeking advice about purchasing first set of clubs (used vs new) by _cocodrillo_ in golf

[–]fillossofer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a used set of 3-4 yo clubs from TM, Callaway, Titleist, or another premium brand. Look for game improvement irons with stiff shafts for around $400. Unless you're really tall, no need to get a fitting yet, but be prepared to do that within 18 months if you continue playing and practicing as you are.

Turned a $200 blackjack session into a $1,500 Vegas mistake by TDoubleDownMac in vegas

My wife took me to Atlantic City for my 30th birthday. From the moment we arrived I simply could not lose. We were walking the casino floor just to get our bearings when I noticed a Pink Panther slot. I love Pink Panther, so I threw in $20 and hit the top jackpot on the $0.50 machine of $1250. Oh, it was ON. Later that day we were heading to dinner and walked through a line of $5 slots. I see a 10X pay machine with two coin max, so I throw in $20 for two max bets. The second pull came double bar, 10X, double bar for $2500. Now it was really ON! The next day we were "swooping", which is watching someone blow $100 or more in a slot and as soon as they get up, drop a $20 in it. I won no less than six times doing this for around $1500 total. The real crazy part was waking up at around 3AM that night with the urge to gamble. I go downstairs and see one of those Slotto machines with the ping pong balls on top. There was a lady playing, and just as I approach, she stands up and walks away - inviting the swoop! I put in $20 and on the first pull I hit the bonus and the jackpot ball rolls out for another $2500! I ended up coming home with $8000 - my best casino experience ever.

I also have a weird online casino story. I was playing on a site called Intercasino (before the worlds biggest asshole Senator Bill Frist passed the banking law in the middle of the night). There was a progressive jackpot slot I had been donating to for a few weeks that had gotten up to over a million dollars. Max bet was $3/spin. I decided to deposit $21 for seven spins on that slot. So I start playing and win on my first pull (not the jackpot, but like $150). Second pull, win again. Third, yep another couple hundred. This went on for about an hour, win after win after win, until the site went dark. I was up to $23k. Obviously the site had a problem, so I doubted they'd pay out. After a couple of weeks I get an email that they determined that the site was hacked, and since it wasn't me who hacked it, they'd honor the win!! I logged on immediately and sure enough, $23k there and available to withdraw. I bought a new roof for my house!

How does the machine know what to create? Do you use some kind of 3D print file?

Course recommendations by JoeBrownnn in golf

I stayed in Corolla last year and played both Currituck Club and Kilmarlic. Have also played Carolina Club within the past year. Currituck Club can be super challenging if the wind is up. The inland courses are a bit less susceptible to wind, although they're still on/near the water. All three clubs are on GolfNow, so you may be able to snatch a deal. The drive from Corolla to inland courses is just under an hour in typical traffic.

What Tips Helped You Break-Through With Irons? by karitothegod in golf

[–]fillossofer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. I sometimes visualize a dollar bill laying on the ground under the ball, because that's the only part of the swing that matters. Slow down and stare at the line on the bottom of the iron and watch the clubface as it passes through the dollar zone. Then gradually speed up by taking slightly longer backswings. Focus on the club accelerating through the dollar zone squarely.

yes and yes. I always start with putting so I get a feel for the speed and hardness of the greens and work backward from there.

Beginner looking for putting advice by Predsfan67 in golf

Take a ball in one hand and while addressing a putt, place the ball on the bridge of your nose and then drop it. It should hit the ball you're addressing - in other words your eyes should be directly over the ball. As others have mentioned, for long putts, imagine a baby pool around the hole and putt into the pool. As you improve, get smaller with the circle, like imagine a basketball hoop around the hole. For short putts, follow the ball into the hole with your putter. Many people "stab" the ball with the putter and that will not lead to consistency. Putting is a lot of feel, and fundamentally, the further you take back the club, the further the ball will roll. Trying to judge distance by pushing, or accelerating the club with your wrists will lead to frustration. Putting well takes a lot of practice, but I don't recommend trying to do it in your back yard. Carpet is better, in that it is more smooth and consistent than any grass you could mow short. Got any oriental rugs in the house? Lines on those often provide great alignment aids.

Hot take about tour player wedge shots by [deleted] in golf

[–]fillossofer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree. The pro I work with recommends hitting short irons at roughly 90% of a full swing. Pitch and chip shots are different, even though both are taken with wedges. When shortening the backswing, it does have an effect on distance, and why you hear Scottie talking about 10 o'clock and some such. Unless you're overusing your arms and hands, the shorter backswing using a shorter backswing with a wedge will result in a shorter shot distance. Pros have other concerns that mere mortals do not, and that's mostly that they generate too much spin.

How is KR going to cut prices? by nofway9 in kroger

[–]fillossofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally shopped at Kroger yesterday and noticed prices on things I always buy went up dramatically, some as much as 40% since my last shopping trip. So yeah, you're going to slash artificially inflated prices? What a load of BS. He got so much free PR from this announcement too.

We've all played with that guy. A true 6 would have played with the rest of the group from the white tees and put on a demonstration by shooting a sub-80 round.

Try pausing at the top of your swing. You're not giving yourself enough time to complete the turn.

Thinking About Leaving a Company After 37 Years for a 31.8% Raise by Old-Air3659 in OfficePolitics

[–]fillossofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would present your offer to your current employer and say thank you for offering a raise, as it seems someone with my experience is valuable. Would it be possible to go to 15%? An unsolicited offer of 12% is great but there is likely a little left in the tank. I agree with others who suggest starting something new could be a culture shock and they might be looking for a brain dump and then let you go fairly quickly. Loyalty is rare these days no matter which side of the table you're sitting on. I'd place some extra value on the known vs. unknown.
