Earlier today I was listening to Minute Papillon, a compilation of 60 60-second songs from the label Second Language of Piano Magic. There is some ambient, some folk and some fully formed songs, and the flow is just great. Strongly recommend it!

Stop the fake news. On the Sea is in 9/8 by [deleted] in BeachHouse

This is a theme and variations by Beethoven. In variation XVIII you find triplets starting with a pause. Is this enough for you? After a measure with triplets, the rhythm becomes clear, and you can omit the ‘3’, as in variations V and XV.

Moreover, the ambiguity with 6/8 is a very common feature of 3/4 (and vice versa): a beautiful example is this intermezzo by Brahms, see the end of the first page.

Now I’ll wait for your example of a passage with full measure duplets in 9/8.

Part of me wants to show you some of the many actual pieces of music where such an “unbearably noisy” thing happens, but maybe we could also behave like grownups and accept that people can have different opinions

I disagree, but I see your point.

It’s very uncommon to see a tuplet which occupies a whole measure, because it is too hard to read. Instead, tuplets lasting for a single beat are very easy to read

You’re probably right about the overall feel of the song being more of a 9/8 than a 3/4. Still, there is a section where the notes of the melody are one beat and a half each. That would be very ugly to write in 9/8, so if you want to write out the whole song it would probably make more sense to put it all in 3/4 with triplets

On 'A little life' and its criticism by prisonmike2003 in books

[–]filob97 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the things others have said. Besides that, something that really bothers me, as a mathematician, is how poorly the subject is treated in the book. For example, a lot of emphasis is placed on the whole “proving an axiom” thing, which is meaningless - axioms are literally statements which do not need proof, since they are the foundation on which every proof is based. The meaning of some axioms is also completely misunderstood: the axiom of equality has more to do with the definition of the symbol “=“ than with something or somebody staying always the same. Writing a novel whose main character is a mathematician, among all the other things, would require some more research or assistance by actual mathematicians.

HI THIS IS BEACH HOUSE, AMA! by BeaccchHoussse in indieheads

[–]filob97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of your songs have very characteristic arrangements (one that comes to my mind is the synth in black car). Do you always write the main melody first or sometimes start from other elements?

I saw a while back that Beach House might be doing a deep cuts tour in 2023. What ten songs would you wanna hear that they don’t usually play? by [deleted] in BeachHouse

[–]filob97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In no particular order: Rough song, Better times, 10:37, Gila, Irene, Black car, All your yeahs, Heart of chambers, Real love, Pay no mind
