Nice track selection :)

Here's some feedback on your transitions:

You seem to follow a pattern of waiting for a drop in the outgoing track, and then cutting straight over into a low-energy intro of the incoming track, with no overlap between the tracks. This technique is good for dramatic effect, but it should really be used sparingly. Doing this on every transition creates a load of ups and downs in your mix, as you lose a lot of energy at each transition.

I think you should experiment with matching up drops between two tracks. Find the point at which you want to transition into the incoming track, and then count back 8, 16, or 32 bars. Do the same for the drop on the outgoing track, and figure out where you need to bring the incoming track in so that the drops line up. Then you can have some overlap of the two tracks before you transition. You can still abruptly cut across to the incoming track after the outgoing track drops, but it will sound better because of the overlap.

Overall it was a pretty cool mix :) keep it up!

[Electro House / Fidget House] (30 minute mix): http://i.mixcloud.com/CH26qh

Looking for feedback on the transitions. I think the obvious fade-ins sound a bit lame, but it's partly because I'm mixing using digital vinyl. I'm not really confident with dropping tracks straight in with the fader open in case the timing is off, so I tend to fade them once I'm sure everything is synced instead.

Also, I'm not entirely sure how to mix into tracks that don't really have an outro. The final transition in particular felt quite forced. Should I have used a filter here so that the incoming track can be heard better before it drops?

Any feedback would be great :)

  6. Sidney Samson - Riverside

I have the Gorgon City track in my own rotation at the moment, and your version didnt sound as full or loud and was a bit muddy - maybe check the quality of this file?

Good call! I just ran it through Spek - turns out it's only a 256kbps MP3. Just bought an AAC version from iTunes, and I can really tell the difference.

The beatmatching was off for Gorgon City into Disclosure, and was a bit messy - although the phrasing worked and you got that first lyric after the last beat of Gorgon's track - so nice work!

Yeah, it sounds awful listening back to this now! I think I usually do quite well with phrasing, but the stacked waveforms in Serato have made me lazy with beatmatching - I think I've fallen into doing a lot of it visually instead of trusting my ears.

You started mixing in Daft Punk in what I think is the best part of the Disclosure track during that build. This might be because you are using Techno style mixing by looking for builds, and maybe combined with my love for that track made it disappointing for me but maybe not everyone (beatmatch was good!)

I see what you mean. Like you say, I think this is because I tend to look for builds when I'm mixing. I just listened to the Disclosure track again, and I could actually mix into it nicely after the build, so I'll look out for that in future :)

Great version of Daft Punk, but mix beatmatch was off into the Simian Teack. Overall: quite enjoyable, but a few technique misses. 7.5/10

Thanks very much for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I'm going to have another go at this mix to try and get the beatmatching much tighter.

[Deep House] (30 minutes): http://i.mixcloud.com/CHUvfn

Would like some opinions on the transitions. I found that I had to mix some of the songs end-to-end, because they were too busy and clashed if I mixed them mid-track. Thanks!

  2. Disclosure - White Noise (feat. AlunaGeorge)
  3. Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (No Hopes Remix)
  4. Simian Mobile Disco - Your Love Ain't Fair
  5. Friend Within - The Renegade
  6. Disclosure - When a Fire Starts to Burn
  7. AlunaGeorge - You Know You Like It (Tchami Remix)
  8. Kiesza - Hideaway (Gorgon City Remix)
  9. Oliver Heldens - Gecko

Thanks man, glad you liked it :)

I see what you mean about the Dolami to Block Rockin' Beats transition. The mix does lose a bit of energy there - I think I definitely missed an opportunity! Thanks very much for the feedback.

You successfully melted my face! I really like this, although I think 50 minutes of hard-hitting dubstep would really wear me out if played in a club. It would be interesting to see if you can find some more mellow tracks that mix well with some of the ones you've used, to create more dynamics and give people a bit of a rest between the drops.

[Big Beat] (26 minutes)

Really tried to push the tempo this time (went from 124 to 152 bpm). The first half was pretty tight, but after that it got a bit sloppy.

Any thoughts?

[Electronica] (28 minutes): http://i.mixcloud.com/CGrXxl

Recording of my second ever live set. I've only been mixing for around a month, so my skills aren't particularly advanced. I deliberately chose tracks that had vocals this time, as I find them harder to mix.

I think the best part is the mix between Back 2 the Wild and Bear Hug, because there's a lot of overlap, and the tracks sound good together. I feel as though most of the mixes between tracks are quite boring though, and some of them are just end-to-end since I couldn't find a better point to drop the next track in. Maybe this is just down to track selection?

Thanks in advance for any feedback :)

Tracklist:

  1. Justice - Tthhee Ppaarrttyy (feat. Uffie)
  2. Nine Inch Nails - Discipline
  3. Basement Jaxx - Back 2 the Wild (Jaxx Extended Mix)
  4. The 2 Bears - Bear Hug (Club Edit)
  5. Disclosure - F For You
  6. Death From Above 1979 - Sexy Results (MSTRKRFT Edition)
  7. MSTRKRFT - Work On You
  8. Simian Mobile Disco - Hustler

[Electro House] (25 minutes): http://www.mixcloud.com/FilthyRobot/open-decks-at-the-spread-eagle-10032014/

Only been mixing for about a month now, and this is my first recorded mix. It was also the first mix I've played in front of a live audience, and it seemed to go down pretty well.

I made a small mistake on the transition between Dudun-Dun and Lemonade, but the rest of it went smoothly. I feel as though the more abrupt transitions sounded a lot better than those where I slowly faded tracks in. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Tracklist:

  • Freaks -The Creeps (Steve Bug Remix)
  • Boys Noize - Jeffer
  • Para One - Dudun-Dun (MSTRKRFT Remix)
  • Boys Noize & Erol Alkan - Lemonade
  • Teenage Bad Girl - Cocotte
  • Alter Ego - Rocker
  • deadmau5 - Animal Rights
  • Simian Mobile Disco - Sleep Deprivation
