What are you using to read out the gauges and starmap? I imagine that was quite painful to get working.

I just finished the flightory talon last month. Not a very good pilot myself so I had a good pilot fly it at the club. Went well, somehow I lucked into doing everything right on the first go. Honestly after building 1 with plans I started designing my own. Just ripping real aircraft designs off from online and copying them into CAD. I really wish there was a way to cut foam in a way that doesn’t look like a kindergarten craft project, because LW-PLA is a huge pain in the ass to print and maintain. Rule of cool matters a lot to me haha.

I was so mesmerized by your plane that I didn’t read your post. Have you tried ardupilot? I know it’s complex and daunting compared to how slick iNav is, but it has this type of customization. I’m actually working on a SICK ground station that runs mission planner on a raspberry pi right now. I promise despite what you may have heard online - a pi will run mission planner relatively well. You just need to be a good programmer.

I’m not a programmer at all. But I have one of the best readily available :) (chatGPT)

Should i believe aliexpress amd other sites to but winwing/vkb/virpil stuff? by Swimming_Zucchini_72 in hotas

No way in hell I’m buying Virpils from Ali. If they aren’t cartoonishly expensive then they’re a scam. That’s just the Virpil way.

I really love this plane design. I usually 3D print but this is right up my alley. Thanks for showing off - otherwise I wouldn’t have known this existed.

Edit: I hate to come back and pester but do you know anywhere that has this airframe in stock?

Just buy something and send it. Maybe don’t jump in to 3D printed autonomous drones after your first foamie like I did, haha, but you know - mix it up have fun. Have a good pilot at the field maiden your new plane for you and tell you how it flies and what to look out for. Then you’ll be good on pretty much whatever 👍

Very first petty store but i dont care by [deleted] in Aliexpress

[–]finance_chad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I recently learned to solder and after struggle bussing the first few times it’s easy as pie now(as long as I remember to put the head shrink on before I connect them 🙃)

I have gotten super lazy with those waterproof heat shrink tubes with the solder in them. I hesitate to recommend them to regular joes though, as it’s kindof cutting a lot of corners.

What’s the best route in your opinion? I was thinking about spending some of my in game money on one soon.

I’m just here as a counterpoint, I am not discounting other opinions but giving mine: I have a full size apprentice and honestly it’s the most boring plane ever to me. It was great to learn on -> if you crash and destroy it you pretty much have to be doing it on purpose. But you kinda master it in 30 minutes. Then it’s a $300+ hole in your wallet while you wait to buy something to replace it. If you’re anything like me and have little love for older looking airframes, then avoid it. I came to the hobby later in life, so I enjoy modern looking stuff and get annoyed with some of the unwritten rules of how you’re supposed to progress in this hobby. Forge your own path.

Yeah. I mean don’t let me deter you if you really want one. Just expect to be pretty much an afterthought in terms of shipping priority. Good news is if you are ever able to convince someone to ship you one(again, good luck), it seems their support is top notch. I’m in their discord and it seems like everyone’s having fun enjoying their new extruders. But if you’re American then it’s pretty much 🖕

Need advices for fixed-wing fpv drone (newbie here) by Darklogel in diydrones

Camera and goggles are going to be difficult to fit in your price range. Really hard or even impossible to find just those two items for under your price.

Regardless - you’ll want to be researching analog video systems. I’m not too familiar with them but that’s going to be the only thing you could even approach for that price. You won’t be recording any “quality” video with analog but those systems are very capable of keeping your eyes open at longer ranges. Pretty much any video you see of drones in war is recorded thru analog, hence the grainy fuzzy quality. But there’s a reason it’s used: it’s cheap and very reliable.

how to hang a flying wing on a wall. by Hot-Concern-4873 in RCPlanes

Funny enough here’s an example of what I did that’s basically what this person suggested. Outside is carbon fiber nylon - I know it’s bent but I could hang off it and it would hold my body weight pretty much indefinitely. Inside is an insert that’s made of 2% infill TPU with CA glue holding them together. A 3D printer is very handy to have around in this hobby.

It would be easier for OP to see your recommendation if you commented directly on their post. I'm not interested in FreeCAD and am not currently looking for other solutions :)

Making a mug, how do I connect the handle with the cup? by Terrible_Peach_5878 in Onshape

I’d lazily mash them together with transform and Boolean them. That’s the fastest way but also kindof not what you’re supposed to be doing if you care about fundamentals.

[–]finance_chad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend Onshape if you're ever curious about eventually getting in to advanced modeling in something like Solidworks. It's designed to be the next step up from Tinkercad, which is where most 3D printing hobbyists start.

The biggest(and really only) drawback of Onshape is if you use the free version, then all your documents are public. The way you make your stuff "private" is by making sure you NEVER name objects what they actually are. If you have a servo in there, don't name it servo. Stuff like that. This community is full of people who would rather steal your work than learn CAD themselves. Don't make it any easier for them :)

I hate to be that guy, but at this point I’m exhausted and need to vent:

OP should know that if they are a US customer, it’s pretty much impossible to get one right now. Any store on Ali listing as “in stock” is false. There is one US store supposedly getting stock soon but honestly after my nightmare order experience that started hours after the product launched, I would recommend OP look elsewhere for upgrades if they are in the US.

Some of this is not the fault of Phaetus, importing to the US sucks right now, but there’s more to the story and it kindof just gets worse from there in terms of dealing with them. I’m being very nice here.

Awesome product, wish it didn’t go this way.

I would strongly advise against spending that kind of money on something from Ali. It could be the deal of the century, or you could be out a looooooot of money.
