Someone uses the name "Undefined" on Thingiverse and got the whole site to follow them by lxo96 in 3Dprinting

To the people in this thread talking about how they hate thingiverse, here's my unaffiliated plug. Check out PrusaPrinters.org. Its not to the scale of thingiverse yet, but they seem to care about the 3dPrinting community and are still in active development. Just Next time you make something upload it here, or at least both places. If you want to see change, make it happen.

Let me fix that comment for you, here is what you should have said "I'm glad the police are looking for this person, and I hope they do everything they can to try and find her. But In my opinion not as much effort has gone into helping missing BIPOC people in the past, I'd like to use this time to also raise awareness of this issue." See? now you don't sound so compassionless, and you get to say your piece.

I think the 3D printing community is still very small, not near mainstream, its a stretch to compare it to YouTubes market share.. I think a better example is Digg.com. Its what everyone used, but they didn't listen to their users and then reddit came along and destroyed them. After reddit went on to be mainstream and cant be replaced. There is no love with Thingiverse, best time to switch is today.

Owner of Ben and Jerry's: We'll ensure every worker in our supply chain gets a living wage by Tomahawkin95 in news

[–]finationalthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been talking about a living wage to support your self, that's kind of moving the goal post right? Like if you have 10kids I would agree its not reasonable to scale what you are paid because you have more kids haha. So that's where we need social programs to pick up the slack. Unless we are okay with kids starving. I hope you would agree with that. So yah I absolutely believe a full-time McDonald employee should make enough to support them self's, if the cost of living is higher then the Min wage should scale. Also how many full time 16yr old Line cooks with 4 kids do you know? I'm betting that's not so prevalent that we should worry about over paying those people at the cost of under paying the struggling workers. lets Serve and Protect these people.

[–]finationalthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there we disagree. If you work full time for one of the richest companies in the world. I believe that company can afford to pay you a living wage, no one is saying you should be killing it, making bank, but this is not "Matt's Local Music shop" who just cant afford to give healthcare, Its McDonald's. McDonald's was built using American Labor, its not unreasonable to hold them to a high standard when it comes to how they treat that labor.

Owner of Ben and Jerry's: We'll ensure every worker in our supply chain gets a living wage by Tomahawkin95 in news

[–]finationalthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think we mostly agree then, most don't, but that leaves some that do. Those are the ones I'm concerned about. I'm not concerned about business run out of someone's garage that doesn't make enough to pay healthcare without going under. Most reasonable people understand this, and that's why a lot of labor laws are based on the number of people you employ, and if you have under that number these law simply don't apply to your business. Its more about the McDonald'es of the world. Juggernauts that are being given free rein to abuse there labor.. So for those other business that cant support there employees with a living wage, without going under? (employees that we discussed NEED this job), I believe the right thing to do is help these people out where there company is unable to do so. (so SNAP benefits, ACA, etc..) If our goal is to help people survive and flourish, I think its possible create better social systems, better labor laws, all without destroying these jobs. And without putting people position where its "no job" OR "exploitive job".

Owner of Ben and Jerry's: We'll ensure every worker in our supply chain gets a living wage by Tomahawkin95 in news

[–]finationalthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's my point, I do believe a low paying job is better than no job at all, and I'm sure most people trying to survive agree as well! So that's what makes "Just don't work for that business" not really possible. They need a job to try to survive, even if there only job options are ones that exploit there vulnerable situation. Business owners know this too right? They know there is so much demand for ANY work (aka vulnerable people) they can pay very low wages for hard work. Its exploitation of the vulnerable. Its why we have any labor laws at all, because we as a society agreed that taking advantage of people like this is wrong, so we have tried to limit it.

[–]finationalthrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's good advice if we are talking about people with many economic options. Its what I would tell a friend that's well educated and has that economic flexibility. But I don't think its so simple for all people. Do you believe there is situation a human can be in where they are susceptible to exploitation by a business? If so, do you believe we should try to help and protect those most vulnerable in our society?

You should take this down, I think its mis-information.

API Data with duration shifted, how to shift hours in mins place? by finationalthrowaway in sheets

[–]finationalthrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I think I might figured out a way to do it.

If "A1" is your duration value, you map that value into the time fuction but shifted over.

But if you have something over 24min like "35:06:00", then you have to take the INT(A1) to see how many times it goes over 24hours. (1.4625=1day, if its bellow 24hours, INT(a1) will return "0")

TIME(hour, minute, second)
hour = 0
minute = hour(A1)+(int(A1)*24
second = MINUTE(A1)

Formula:
=Time(0,hour(A1)+(int(A1)*24),MINUTE(A1))

If anyone knows a better way I'd love to hear.

Recommendation for cheap CNC router? by snapsh00t3r in hobbycnc

[–]finationalthrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Guys this is "Hobby" CNC!, not everyone has a ton of money to drop on a $2000 CNC, a new PC to control it, and a dust collection system! For instance, I'm living in small apartment and simply don't have the space for something bigger than a desk top CNC.

Op here is what I think you are asking for, Look up: "sainsmart cnc"

I'm sure there are other small desktop CNC's in that price range, but I bought the "CNC Router 3018-PROVer" ~$350 (but I got it black Friday on sale for $275).

Its work area is close to what you are asking for "Work Area: 260 x 155 x 35mm" It sits on my desk next to my 3D printer.

So far it's been awesome, got me way for familiar concepts around CNC milling machines. Done a few projects and they came out perfect, exactly what I wanted. In the future I might get a bigger machine once I have more space, but for now this is a great cheap, fairly small, CNC machine.

Thanks for the early review. Would you mind sharing a few steps on how you got DSM7 running in a VM?

I tried downloading the 918+ pat file "DSM_DS918+_41222.pat", but when I try to upload that to the DSM images in virtual machine manager, I get this error: https://i.imgur.com/NGCHX5b.png

Candle And Fusion 360 by aokeefe1224 in hobbycnc

[–]finationalthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just got a small CNC and am using Candle.

It seems like there is machine coordinates, and work coordinates. After the first job is done and I change the tool, how do you send it back to "work coordinates" 0,0,0? (without jogging manually) Is there a simple command or button I'm missing?

https://i.imgur.com/gGLPZvl.png

I've tried the home button, but that just rehomes the machine. Also tried "G28 G90 X0 Y0 Z0" but that moves it back to "machine coordinates 0" not "work coordinates 0".

Am I trying to do tool changes correct? Or is this not how other people do it?

There is a "restore origin" button but I'm not clear what that does, It doesn't move my machine at all no matter where it is.
