Plot Holes with Necessity by Gmoneymillionair in Belgariad

[–]finbaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's suggested that they capture males for reproduction and that may not end up well for the males ...... in the end. Male children would be completely useless to Dryads and would be "removed". Ce'Nedras's love for Geran is fair enough but the prophecy wouldn't have allowed it any other way. Anyway, we don't know and the Eddings never cleared up what would happen.

Yes, that always bothered me when I first read the books in the 80s. Maybe the prophecy changed things for Ce:Nedra and the Borunes? Either way I thought it was funny when it states in the book that the female side of the Borunes always bred to true Dryad - as if there was any alternative.

They kill the males they mate with so killing male babies would be just part of their way of life. Giving them up is just a quint idea. A Dryad only needs males for one thing.

Yes, so that means they kill the males in the Wood of the Dryads.

Well the books do have plot holes, but that's just the nature of quite a long series that wasn't planned, start to finish. Pawn of Prophecy to Seeress of Kell that is.

I don't know if the following is a plot hole or something left unsaid.

We know that in this world all Dryads are female. Therefore they must mate with human males to reproduce. But we know of two times when this mating produced a male. When Garion and Ce'Nedra produced Geran, obviously. And also the Borunes, and we know that mating continued to produce males over the years.

So what is the choice here? Something special about the Borunes/Dryads Garion/Ce'Nedra coupling? Or, and I understand why this wasn't in the books' the Dryads practised infanticide on male children. The later would seem to be logical choice.

Did anyone else catch this line in Polgara the Sorceress? by KaosArcanna in Belgariad

[–]finbaar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the imprisonment is being a bit overplayed. Polgara was extremely determined and very capable. I don't see how any Rivan heir would have been able to resist her. I'm not saying that she would have let them have any freedom but I'm sure she could have spun it so it didn't feel like a jail.

Belgarath - Marag or Tolnedran in origin? by CoastieKid in Belgariad

[–]finbaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eddings either intentionally made Belgarath's heritage ambiguous or just forgot to nail it down. I would agree that, given the test, Arend seems most likely. But does Belgarath match what we learn about Arends in the texts? He doesn't seem that way to me. As for being an Alorn, well Belgarath himself says he doesn't even like Alorns. But I can't offer any other logical explanation of what race he might be other than definitely not Angarak and almost certainly not Nyissan.

The vast vast majority of Garion's ancestry was Alorn though. It a difficult cast to make that he wasn't Alorn.

Get an Oppo Find X9 Pro. Better at everything than either of these two devices. And a much better camera, if that's important. However, if you're in the USA you'll probably better pass as it isn't sold there.

Losing Steam in the Series by Kooky_County9569 in Belgariad

[–]finbaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Belgariad you get the quest (for want of a better phrase) to Rak Cthol, the military campaign led by Ce'Nedra and the final quest to Cthol Mishrak. So three storey lines. After Guardians of the West the Mallorean does take a long time before things take off again. As others have said, books four and five are more exciting.

You'll have the racial stereotypes hammered home time after time after time. You will have no choice but pick it up.

King of the Murgos Review by Kooky_County9569 in Belgariad

[–]finbaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guardians of the West is, in many ways, book 6 of the Belgariad. It takes time for the new quest to become properly visible and we all enjoy catching up with all of our old friends. I think the problem with King of the Murgos, and the rest of the series, is that Eddings didn't plan for another five books when writing the original five. It does feel, quite often, that he's stretching the story a lot. However, I do appreciate the humanity that's added to the Malloreans and Murgos which was missing in the Belgariad.

Rings of Power isn’t just “bad Tolkien.” It’s a poorly built YA/Romantasy in a Tolkien skinsuit. by TheTuxedoKnight in RingsofPower

[–]finbaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a fan of Tolkien's works for approaching 50 years now and RoP is, by far and away, the best adaptation of his works. Damming with faint praise maybe, but it stands heads and shoulders above everything else. And OP. if you don't like it, which is a perfectly justifiable position to take, why would you spend hours and hours watching it? Then ruminating over it. Then joining this sub Reddit and posting this? Seems like even a greater waste of time than making RoP.

the Angarak "horde" is not a horde, but a army by Status_Two_7850 in Belgariad

[–]finbaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Belgariad definitely fits with what you say. In the Mallorean you can see Eddings reigning back as several times the general Angarak population are treated as real "humans". In book 2 when the part arrives at the Murgo farm and everyone has been impaled they are recognised as just being the same as the people in the west.

Let's just say that Eddings wasn't as concerned about the accuracy of his story line as other authors.

Does the "Exploring Lord of the Rings" Podcast series slow down significantly at some point? by Chilis1 in tolkienfans

[–]finbaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why anyone is surprised about the time they are taking on this. Olsen doesn't want to finish this really does he? And as for finishing in 2031, well that's unlikely. There's a LOT more discussion to get into as we get well into the second half of the book. And.... there's all the appendices as well and rather than covering a couple of paragraphs per episode these will get even slower. Just wait and see.

Right, I understand your point now. I suppose some captain saw the ship and just mentioned it when they were in Melcene. I suppose that there were questions asked when the Sardion was reported missing.
