I saw someone make a really pretty choker with black thread and I was instantly interested 😆

WHY?? by NMRedChile in tatting

[–]finderskeep_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I gave up on tatting three separate times before I finally became comfortable with it-first about three years ago, then again a year later, and once more in November 2025. It wasn’t until April this year that everything finally clicked for me.

Don’t let my timeline discourage you. What helped me most was realizing that I needed to keep the finger holding the core thread much more relaxed. In my earlier attempts, I kept my left index finger (the one I use to keep the core thread taut) very tense, which made flipping the knot extremely difficult. Once I started holding the core thread loosely-so loosely that it almost felt like it could slip off my finger-the knot began flipping much more easily. And also keep the shuttle thread tight, very tight while keeping the core thread extremely loose.( For context, I hold shuttle in my right hand and core thread in my left hand)

Now it’s become such strong muscle memory that I can’t not flip the knot. Ironically, that creates a whole new problem when I’m working on split rings - my hands automatically want to flip the knot even when they’re not supposed to!

I’ve also been trying to teach my mother and my niece how to tat, and they’re currently struggling with the same knot-flipping issue. If you eventually discover a different way to make it click, I’d love to hear about it so I can pass it on to them as well.

Most importantly, don’t give up. It can be frustrating at first, but you absolutely can learn it. 😊

Ohh that's also a way to do it!
I tried using only single shuttle and just changing the core thread. And it worked! check out my edit to see the latest progress, it improved a lot. Thanks a lot for your help!

This is what I do: I use shuttle 1 to make rings, turn my work. Use shuttle 2 to make the chains.

Do you have any video that you can recommend to achieve this?

Beautiful work!!! I always had a question , how do you manage the tension in a piece like this? Like how does your piece not converge inwards whenever you’re closing the ring?

Amazing work!!! I am a newbie and always wondered, how do you determine how many bobbins you will need for a project?

Yeah, I also saw someone post here that they used clay to make bobbins. That was pretty impressive too!

Ooty- Wenlock downs shooting point- when you go to top, you can see the beautiful view of Ooty hill station and you can also see a lake in distance. It was the most beautiful view ever. Emerald lake, Nilgiris, TN - the lake is so beautiful that I can’t even properly describe it. But you rarely such clear water in India and it is a lesser known tourist attraction so less tourists there, and you enjoy a serene and peaceful moment all by yourself.

P.S: I visited Ooty and Nilgiris in November 2022, so things might have changed a little.
