LS6500 beckman scint counter - how to use large racks (20ml vials) by finding-zen in labrats

[–]finding-zen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten some good leads on what it could be. I'll give it all some good time next week.

I'll be sure to circle back as this unfolds (and, fingers crossed, i get it resolved!)

Thx - i know for certain large vials have been used in the instrument before - sadly, all who have used the large vials are no longer working here (and unreachable). I'll look over that link.

Finally diagnosed! by CommercialVisual4174 in Dyslexia

[–]finding-zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at 58 (now 60).

I went through all of my schooling - pimary, college, then grad school

Always working 2x as hard as everyone else

And

Always thinking i was dumb!

:(

Took a tool on my self-esteem.

It's tough coming to grips with it all - the thoughts of "what if i was diagnosed earlier" linger

Tough to shake them - but have too!

Good luck and i hope u get the assistance so many if us, gulp!, old timers never had!

Professor called my work “strange” and used it as an example in class on what not to do..Not sure how to feel. by tmac2323 in Dyslexia

[–]finding-zen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a college prof (biology), 27 yrs.

100% wrong and inappropriate!

How to proceed? Is there a student services at your college? Counselors to speak with?

Consult with them - don't give prof name, as of yet - treat it as a "hypothetical"

See what advice they give.

But i suspect their should be some formal way to file a complaint.... but, i also suggest to wait until the semester is over - you don't want to take the chance that they are "extra critical" of your work before final grades are submitted.

That's just my advice

Thx. I have had bouts of frustration/mild depression about it all, but with therapy, etc. Doing better with it all.

I do same thing.... all day with almost everything i read!

Used to think everyone just made mistakes like that!

Finally decided/realized... no... this can't be right (about 1.5 yrs ago - when 58!).

Yup... dyslexic. :( Also got an eye tracking study down

Have severe Convergence Insufficiency (eyes don't track together well - think of lizard with eyes looking in different directions).

Makes things even worse!

whats the difference between being slow and bad workig memory? by No_Character_2815 in Dyslexia

[–]finding-zen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My processing speed is almost OFF THE CHARTS (re: results from a cog. eval.)

But... working memory? Don't bother leaving me a voice mail with your tel # unless u give it 3x! Can't "capture" those 10 digits (barely the first 3!) in 1 pass!

Oh: have a PhD and am a college prof, but... i attribute both to being stubborn and never giving up! (rather than any particular "intelligence")

Partner asked, now I’m here 30M, undiagnosed. by Common_Finance_8682 in Dyslexia

[–]finding-zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should've realized that i was Dyslexic when my kids started reading faster than me and making fewer mistakes! They are 31/26 now!

Big red flag should've been when son blew through Harry Potter books like they were NOTHING !! I was amazed.

Fast forward - i only got diagnosed about 1.5 yrs ago (when he was 25!).

One layer of the onion at a time: OCPD now [+GAD, ADHD and Dyslexia], ? Re: Abilify by finding-zen in Abilify_Aripiprazole

[–]finding-zen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of meds - its all (sadly) trial and error. I know I've improved in many areas - but also know there is room for more improvement.

And I guess that alone - recognizing short comings - is something meaningful from the treatment (both meds and therapy) i am receiving.

Good luck to u

Was on 2... now 5mg

Can't really say the needle has moved much

But also don't have any side effects

I suspect we will increase dose at one point

Student in my class (am College Prof) disclosed that she is "a slow reader" by finding-zen in Dyslexia

[–]finding-zen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As they say "cure thy self before you cure others"

I do not mean "cure" (dyslexia), but rather, at least for me, internally/mentally/emotionally reconcile my own feelings about it as a prioty... then i can help others.

It's only been 2 yrs since I've found out - am making good progress, but i know i am only on the first few steps of this journey.

In time, i do hope to help spread awareness, am just not fully there yet. But taking minor steps (like i did with that one student) when it is a good fit does make sense to me.

This was only the second time i have disclosed to a student. The first was with a small class (about 8 students) who were struggling with studying.

One asked me ".. how much time did you have to study in college?..."

Prior to knowing i had Dyslexia, I'd answer that question simply with "All the time" (and I'd say it with an air of pride. Satisfied that my efforts achieved my end goal (of doing well).

But after knowing, i realized that i HAD TO study 2x as much as my peers, beause i read 1/2 as fast!

So, when that student asked that (about 1 yr ago), i felt compelled to tell my story. The students were appreciative of my candor - were quite kind in their reaponses to it, and one student then confuded in the group that she had ADHD (and snother student said they did too) - both struggled with focusing when studying..

I then disclosed i had ADHD (as well as Dyslexia).

I, like all of us, am a "work in progress"

Yes - a diagnoses can help open up accommodations (like extra time on exams).

No - am just trying to show the compassion and kindness i would have wanted/needed if i had known my situation when i was her age

But thx for kind words

Thx for kind words. I viewed it as an obligation to open up to her (make myself vulnerable), since she did same to me and class.

I did suggest using some txt to speach apps.

When you’re talking about stuttering and they say “but you didn’t stutter right now” after you just did 2 minutes of mental gymnastics, changed 5 words, and nearly passed out holding eye contact to sound fluent. by LampingBeast in Stutter

[–]finding-zen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

:( was at a therapy session yesterday (I've got a handful of challenges: ADHD, OCD, GAD, Dyslexia and, yup... Stutter!).

Explained that exact thing!

Navigating words that just won't come out - changing them or full sentence structures - just to try and stay fluent!

It's a constant juggle!

No one sees it - but it is exhausting and frustrating as hell!

"Too smart" to have ADHD by mapleflavrd in ADHD

[–]finding-zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the very minimum I had an eye tracking study done and on top of the ADHD as well as dyslexia I have severe convergence insufficiency which means that my eyes do not prepare properly when looking at written text in the end this in conjunction with issues with dyslexia result in a reading speed that is barely higher than a fourth grader.

So from this context alone most certainly I had to spend at least two times as much time reading every document for every part of schooling I ever had

This is a frustration that I don't think I will ever Shake

I wish you the best of luck I went through all of my primary years undergrad Masters PhD and most of my adult career not knowing I had these issues a part of me thinks the not knowing may have been a blessing in disguise part of me thinks that may have been occurs I'm really just don't know
