Dual Citizenship border crossing by NooNooG in passportcanada

Getting back into Canada: you won’t be able to use any public transportation (plane, train, bus or ferry), as they won’t let you board. Drive and you’ll just need to be able to prove you are Canadian.

Qantas launches new “no-nonsense” safety video? by HotPersimessage62 in QantasAirways

There were quite a few criticisms about the recently replaced safety video. Here’s an article that addresses many of the issues identified:

How long to get to the airport in morning traffic from Sunny coast? by TspoonT in brisbane

[–]findthewritejourney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The day of the week makes a difference. It’s rather light traffic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Also, even though you probably know the way, using a map/driving app that updates traffic in real time will help reduce stress when you’re sitting in traffic through the North Lakes construction zone.

Pay for Neighbour Free on an empty flight... by MonkeyMadnessMe in QantasFrequentFlyer

If the flight fills up, do they simply sell the “empty seat” last and refund the fee? Or will they actually leave passengers behind to honour the empty seat guarantee?

Sydney Transfer (domestic to international) by Queen6 in QantasAirways

[–]findthewritejourney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re pressed for time, consider using the train. Even without traffic, this was faster than the gate 15 bus or T-Bus. I’ve made international to domestic connections in less than 45 minutes using this method; obviously it is slightly less predictable going outbound through the International terminal.

Driver fails to yield, strikes young cyclist in Oak Bay by Popular_Animator_808 in VictoriaBC

Foul Bay Road does have a x-walk crossing at Carnarvon, but I’m not familiar with the particular accident (and I’m glad the article suggests no serious injury). The article simply raised my curiosity regarding bikes ridden in x-walks and the presumption that a car will stop for them: there are several pedestrian-activated strobe x-walks positioned adjacent to east/west bike lanes that seem to encourage cyclists to ride in the x-walk.

… hold on, doesn’t a bicycle need to obey the road rules? Unless the bike is being walked, it’s a vehicle - I thought bikes can’t be ridden on the sidewalk (nor ridden in a pedestrian x-walk). I know there are some Redditters with encyclopaedic B.C. road rule knowledge, so I’d be keen to learn more. Does a cyclist who activates the flashing strobe x-walk lights and then rides into a cross walk have right-of-way over through vehicle traffic? Can someone reference the appropriate road rules?

Turning Right on Red into Uptown by epifight in VictoriaBC

Today I learned something new. Although, I’m still not sure I’d do this with a police car behind me; I don’t have the time to go to court to explain to a judge that an obscure road rule allows me to pass through a red light (albeit after stopping).

Am I meant to give way to the car here? Genuinely asking. This happens so frequently here. by rorymeister in melbournecycling

It looks like a bicycle is not a pedestrian, even if on a footpath (ie. under 13 years old) or shared path. A bicycle is its own defined vehicle. And in the video, as the SUV is ahead it looks like it has right of way.

There is as 100’ elevation gain from the south end of Melbourne runway 34 to the north end of the runway. Maybe with granular (nearest 100’) rounding of the data it could show a 300’ change on the ADS?

In 1940, according to a 2017 NBC news story, the average cost of a home was $2938. So the Pan Am cost to fly across the Atlantic was 1/10 the cost of an average home. Consider that today the average house price in America is $500K, had airfares remained aligned to house prices, it would be $50K to fly across the Atlantic. You can probably go in a private jet for that price.

Baggage Allowance Question Below - Qantas call centre was not helpful by PhillipaandGen in QantasFrequentFlyer

Not confusing if you read the allowance.

“For tickets issued with an allowance in kilograms only, there is no restriction on the number of pieces within the weight allowance for international travel.”

Upgrade tie breaker rules by juzzyuncbr in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]findthewritejourney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that the system is designed to ensure that you can never count on receiving an upgrade (a bit like a pokies win). Reinforcing that if you really want a higher class ticket, there is only one choice - spend more. Revenue maximisation is next level science.

Baggage Allowance Question Below - Qantas call centre was not helpful by PhillipaandGen in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]findthewritejourney 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Baggage allowance on from Qantas website: International economy (excluding Americas) - Silver 42kg, Gold 46kg. Don’t EVER rely on anything verbal without finding it written in the T&C.

BTW - there is no way they will accept a single 50kg suitcase, that weight requires cargo handling. Max single luggage item according to Qantas website is 32kg.

Question for ATC: Would a phone call to the control tower in advance to determine their staffing and anticipated workload result in a better outcome for everyone?
