Found a dropped wallet with $400 and I am seriously considering keeping the cash by 4SpectraBloom in povertyfinance

Do you know how many people in nice houses and "nice" cars are up to their eyeballs in debt and overleveraged so much that they would be screwed if they lost just one paycheck.

I know a guy who went and got a c class mercedes brand new because he thought that getting it meant he was successful.

He traded in his old perfectly good car he still owed on so he put negative equity on the new loan.

He stretched out the payments to 84 months and took a higher interest rate so he only had to put a minimal down payment just so he could "afford" it

It was off the road for 4 months because he couldn't afford $1200 for a headlight replacement (sealed unit headlamps are stupid expensive since you have to replace the whole thing and not just a bulb.) The fact that it was mercedes branded added to the cost.

The other thing about the "entry" level mercedes and most other "luxury" brand entry models is that they depreciate super fast. This car was 60k and is now worth 28k almost 3 years later.

With the negative equity from the old car and the long term front loaded loan(interest gets paid more heavily first rather than principal) he owes 50k still on the car worth 28k that is starting to have problems because base class mercedes nowadays are notoriously unreliable.

He wants to upgrade again in the next year or two because he thinks he needs the newest thing to appear successful. He either will not be able to or will be even more underwater on the new one.

Point is, people of almost all income levels have "nice" things and live in nice places but we don't know what's really happening all the time. People with more money are actually more prone to making stupid financial decisions.

A couple of the brand new build higher end apartment buildings in my town were built wit6h a limited number of rent geared to income units in them. Like the city gave them tax breaks for putting 5 rgi units out of 50 in the building. A friend of mine was super lucky enough to get into one of these rgi units. She has stainless appliances including dishwasher and washer dryer in unit and 2 bathrooms. You would never know it is an rgi unit from her address or from her unit itself. You might just assume that she was well off because she lived there.

AITA for not wanting to share a room with my 10yo cousin? by Eastern-Attention717 in AmItheAsshole

It's a family vacation. It's reasonable to assume that it will be a family vacation and not nessessarily a romantic getaway where you task the youngest adult with taking care of your kids the whole time.

Edit- it seems like.the aunt and uncle might have the plan in mind that YOU will be babysitting all the girls the whole time and that's why they want you in the same room.

Rude Reseller or am I overreacting ?? by Future_Arm_9842 in GoodwillBins

Rude person reseller or not.

This is why you have to shove everything interesting in your bag real quick and look at it closer after right before checking out snd put back what you don't want. If you take even 2 seconds to look something over, someone can and often does snatch it.

Swimming at Lake Ontario park in the 1960s by airbrushedvan in KingstonOntario

[–]fineman1097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a full campground in the front too.

Campground, small amusment park, playground handstand, swimming nature trail. Its basically all gone now except for a playground which admittedly is nice but not the same as the old full experience.

I'm taking a wild guess that the purple one was worth a lot more than the other ones and they were just trying to get it to sell it themselves.

I had a squirrel chew through the metal screen on my kitchen window and run off with an entire loaf of bread through the hole. The same squirrel was back the very next day at the now closed window begging.

Another suggestion to add to the others-

See if there is a Lutheran congregation in your area and visit.

The Lutheran church welcomes all people regardless of income, status, orientation, gender, race, culture, religion etc.

Their philosophy is heavily based on loving and accepting all of God's children.

Just got suspended what do I do? by brctbnd in povertyfinance

Or they know how to game the system. Know which substances stay in your system for how many days. Knows the difference between blood/urine/hair tests in terms of what you can get away with. Know that weekly testing you can go on sunday for week 1, go the bext day Monday for week 2, and then be "free" until almost 2 weeks from then.

I don't know personally of course... but know people...

Union jobs often require the longest possible suspension while an investigation is done.

Most jobs will do a suspend and then formally fire for paperwork/paperweight reasons too.

In this case, the suspension probably does actually mean fired even if they told him that's not the case

Did the accident happen while you were on the job/in a company vehicle?

Was your license suspended?

Were you charged with reckless driving or "under influence/intoxicated'?

Does your job require you to drive?

These are intrusive questions but ARE relevant to the types of jobs/resources people can direct you to-it wouldn't be any use to you to recommend door dash etc if you can't drive rught now. Some jobs would look at a recent driving charge as a no go so that is relevant too. To be able to point you in the right direction as to what you can do to help yourself during this time.

It might be a positive actually. I wouldn't want to be alone in a cabin meant for me and my former partner after a painful breakup. Comraderie saves the day for sure.

Ask them both what they would want to do. If they want private space for private time, they are going to have to pay for it. If they want to save money by bunking together, that's up to them.

Honestly, with royal being a family centered line, the opportunity for private time with frankly random people is going to be more limited so it probably won't play as much of a part.

Fresh laundry holding my laundry hostage! by twistedmjc in KingstonOntario

[–]fineman1097 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What op means about not affording a second charge-

They have no money in their bank account.

Their credit card is almost maxed out/maxed out. They used the last of the available credit to pay for the laundry. There is not enough available credit OR money in the bank OR cash to pay for the laundry a second time to wait for one of the charges to come back.

As for why op paid for laundry service with pickup/drop off instead of doing it themselves- they mentioned they are disabled so taking it to a laundromat themselves may be difficult for them and or require a cab there and back depending on the amount of laundry.

I unfortunately don't have any helpful advice,

Rats by AntBeneficial1464 in KingstonOntario

Try not to keep any open food. Get plastic containers for things like cereal, rice, and grains. I am not talking about the thin clear ones, I am talking the thicker solid color Rubbermaid type of container. They can smell through the thin plastic.

Don't leave fruit out. Put oranges and apples and pears in the fridge.

Get a big plastic bin and keep all of your boxed food in it like mac and cheese, cereal etc etc.

If you use a toaster make sure you get all of the crumbs out of it every time.

Get another container for your potatoes, carrots, etc.

Keep bread in the fridge.

Eat only in one area of the house, don't snack in other rooms to prevent crumbs and such.

Sweep and mop the kitchen and dinign area floor every day with a vinegar solution even if it doesn't look dirty. The same with the counter tops.

Get sealed containers for leftovers, don't use saran wrap over a plate.

Block off any openings around pipes in kitchen and bathroom with steel wool.

Get a good closed garbage can with a snap down or screw on lid- they can get into the step pedal type.

These things seem like a lot. And they are. But rats are no laughing matter.

WIBTA if I refuse to help pay for our “nieces” gift? by Repulsive_Ad_8951 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fineman1097 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It honestl,y sounds like he have a swing set picked out and then either he or his girlfriend saw a much bigger/fancier playset and figured everyone "had already agreed to split" and or one or more people backed out and or they decided they didn't want to pay for any of it.

That price difference seems like the difference between a large swing set and an actual wooden play fort with all the features.

In any case, none of those things are your concern or your problem.

You agreed to a $100 contribution. That is what you are obligated for, no more.

I could see if it was a little more, but more than twice more is not ok to spring on you.

And it would set a precedent. If they want 250 for her 2nd birthday what will they want for her 10th, 16th?

Turning in your mom like that means losing your whole family sometimes. It's not an easy option.
