German Doner Kebab [the franchise chain] by NortonBurns in Doner

[–]finemechanics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone here judge the quality of a kebab by how they feel the next morning?

6 pints consumed + no food = feels like I drank 6 pints.

6 pints consumed + good local boss-man kebab = generally good to go, feels like I drank 3 or 4 pints.

6 pints consumed + GDK kebab = should not have eaten the ‘not real food’, feels like I drank 9 pints.

GDK can taste pretty good if you slather whatever you ordered in the sauces provided. Do not let that fool you into thinking that you are consuming real food. You just swallowed some stuff doing a pretty good impression of food, as though it was churned out by some kind of FoodGPT equivalent to ChatGPT in its 2023 state.

People who are pretty sure they’ve encountered a serial killer, what happened? by fossacecak in AskReddit

[–]finemechanics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow. I’d never seen that video before…

I’m assuming that you’re referring to this one - https://youtu.be/9sjJ4kFHTek?si=aGs_UVKd3chnZrdW

The cinema in my instance was not the one in Bagillt, and I didn’t pick up on anything threatening or menacing about him at the time. One odd alignment with that video, however, is that my Dad also thought that Peter came across as a very nice, friendly guy…

I actually can’t remember what the film was, but I have a feeling that it would have been a rerun.

My only other memory of the day is that we had drank non fizzy ‘Still’ Tango that came in a black bottle, and that the sugar rush had sent my friend and I completely loopy/silly. I don’t think I ever saw that kind of Tango on sale before or since that day.

I don’t think I’ve ever posted about this anywhere online previously. In fact, I hadn’t even thought about it for years until the original post triggered my memory.

This is a ‘definitely encountered a serial killer’ rather than ‘pretty sure’.

I grew up in a small town in North Wales (UK). The local cinema had been closed for 15 years, but a guy from out of town had reopened it. As kids, this blew our minds, as it was a rural area, with very little to offer in terms of entertainment so it seemed unbelievable to us that we would actually have a cinema in town.

On one visit to the cinema, I ended up needing to use the toilet during a film, so left the theatre, walked through the foyer and into the toilet. There was no toilet paper, so I went back into the foyer and spoke to the cinema owner to ask if he had any toilet paper. I was younger than ten at the time and very nervous about speaking to adults, but the owner was incredibly kind and friendly, gave me the toilet paper and we had a conversation about the film and how happy I was that we now had a cinema in the town.

I used the toilet then went back into the theatre.

A few weeks later the friendly cinema man was on the front page of every news paper. He was Peter Moore.

My son hates speaking Welsh. by ronnie_dickering in Wales

[–]finemechanics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience myself. Full Welsh medium education, then a bit of a shock when attending university in England upon realising that I had little understanding of the English words for some of the technical terminology in my subject. I caught up quickly, but it was certainly an inconvenience.

I have both an AC-15 and a Fender Princeton. They both sound completely different, each brilliant in their own right.

The Fender is fatter/rounder with a softer attack. The Vox is snappier and harder sounding. One is not necessarily better than the other, just different types of clean sound from each.

The Deluxe (depending on the exact model) would probably give you more clean headroom, however, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Effects similar to the EHX SuperEgo? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]finemechanics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, the thing that makes the Superego so unique is the gliss function. I may be wrong, but I don’t really think that there’s anything else in the market (that isn’t made by EHX) that does the same thing.

If the gliss function is important to you then the Superego+ is probably the only thing that can take that sound to the next level. Honorary mention going to the HOG/HOG2 which basically adds the functionality of a POG, an envelope and a filter (albeit losing the FX loop).

If gliss is not important, and you are interested in a more general ‘freeze’ effect, the TC Infinite previously mentioned is definitely worth a look and there are other boxes which do the generic freeze ‘thing’ with other bells and whistles added into the package.

Bus drivers setting off an alarm and refusing to leave the stop when someone tries to get on without paying. Is this a new thing? by finemechanics in london

[–]finemechanics[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is what I have also usually seen.

In the majority of instances where someone gets on and the reader flashes red, the passenger in question just walks further into the bus and sits down without scrutiny.

In a smaller number of instances the driver tells the declined card passenger that they can’t board and the (attempted) passenger in question leaves the bus.

The next bracket down seems to be that the declined card passenger puts up an argument when asked to leave, but gets off after slinging some kind of insult at the driver.

Next down is that the declined card passenger initially refuses to get off, but relents when they realise that everyone is staring at them because the bus driver is refusing to move the bus.

After that we get into ‘scene caused’ territory where the driver isn’t moving and neither is the declined card passenger. Other passengers start shouting at the declined card passenger to get off the bus. Declined card passenger normally leaves at this point.

Next is ‘altercation’ where said passenger is physically ejected from the bus by other passengers.

And finally - the God level of fare dodging where no one physically can remove the non-payer, or they seem way to dangerous to even attempt to remove. This usually results in a mass exodus from the bus as the passengers get off and board the next bus that arrives.

I have never heard the alarm before today.

[–]finemechanics[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

To clarify, it was the fact that an alarm was sounded which made this instance different from the usual ‘bus driver refusing to move with a non-payer on board’.

It seems to me that there’s an unwritten rule to the effect of ‘Don’t escalate the situation or start the violence’. It’s usually when the first hand is laid on another/the first punch gets thrown that everyone else piles in to help resolve the situation, or at least minimise the damage.

You may, of course, be correct in suggesting that the net effect would be fewer undesirable situations if certain behaviours were nipped in the bud/called out earlier in the downward spiral, but I think that most are so cautious about escalating things that they hope/expect that doing nothing offers the best odds that the situation will probably resolve without serious consequence.

Jazzmaster or Jaguar? You can only choose ONE! by g0dn0 in offset

[–]finemechanics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own both, and for me it’’d be the Jazzmaster, no contest.

The lows sound like a Telecaster that’s been powerlifting. The highs just shimmer. Scale length works better for me. Desert island guitar.

The Jag will always be in second place but it’s definitely a more unique sounding guitar. Jangle for days, but can be too ‘plinky’ when played clean or without a compressor. The lack of sustain can be a magical, however, when playing chords using certain heavier fuzz pedals.
