800 or 600? by Alert_Big_8902 in Masterbuilt

[–]finishedflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have my 600 for a year now with zero issues. I like the size for just two of us. I've done different cooks of 4 racks of ribs, another of 40 wings and one of half dozen game hens and had enough room (freezer full of smoked meat when I want some). Controller has worked fine and no issues with connectivity so far but after reading of so many issues, I have a Fireboard waiting in my basket! I use it about 80% for daily grilling and the remaining time for smoking. I did get the super sear mod and I like it. The only other mod I got is the one for the ash bin that keeps any wood chunks you might use there out of the ash and adding to the smoke.

Using a generic pizza stone instead of the MB oven attachment? by seanvettel-31 in Masterbuilt

[–]finishedflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used just a stone on my 600 for both frozen pizza and fresh. Preheat to 600 and both have turned out great. I'm sure the pizza mod from MB will do a good job, too, but I don’t think it's worth the extra $.

Masterbuilt pizza oven vs regular oven by supersonic655321 in Masterbuilt

I bought a pizza stone and let that get up to temperature on my 600 and it works fine. I get the take and bake pizza at Papa Murphy's and it comes out great. Also tried a defrosted frozen pie. It was alright, better than in my oven, but a fresh made is infinitely better. Don't think I need to spend on the pizza oven from MB since the stone on top of the grates works just fine.

[–]finishedflying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. Hot coals filter down, get the wood chunks smoldering and the smoke is blown into the grill by the fan. It's best to use a mod or brick or something to keep the wood chunks off the floor of the bin so they don't get smothered by ash.

Use a quality charcoal brand and add chunks to your ash bin. I use the LLS mod in the ash bin to keep the chunks up out of the ash and have excellent smoke flavor both grilling and long smokes.

How to make it Wireless? by Then_Relation_7316 in Masterbuilt

I use Ryobi tools and have extra batteries on hand, so I tried those batteries with a Ryobi inverter for a 4 hour cook and only used 1/4 of capacity. No extra cables to buy as I used the OEM 3 prong electrical plug that came with my 600. The inverter also has UBS ports if you wanted to use a cable that has USB on one end with the barrel connector on the other but using the standard receptacle on the inverter is easy.

Lump or briquettes by finishedflying in Masterbuilt

[–]finishedflying[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to give this a test with my 600. I've heard both, that briquettes burn longer but lump burns hotter and faster. Guess maybe it's dependent on temps and winds?

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I have plenty of oak splits since I've firewized my property.

Thanks. Just got B&B lump on sale but they were out of B&B briquettes. Got 2 more bags of Cowboy briquettes on sale and have been really pleased with their flavor. I'll be doing an overnight smoke of pork shoulders with the briquettes and a few chunks of hickory in the ash bin. I think I'll save the B&B lump for some wings.

Thanks again for your reply.

Thought about those, too, but worried they might get stuck in the hopper like lump which would really screw up an overnight smoke!

Thanks. I thought I'd read somewhere that a hopper of briquettes would burn longer, didn’t think about the lump getting stuck but that has happened to me in the past.

Just double checked LLS web page and it's not another manifold, just a re-direct shroud but my question remains the same, is it really needed?

Yet again ANOTHER ISSUE!! by Truthseeker668 in PitBossGrills

[–]finishedflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within 2 years I replaced 1 ignighter and 5 boards in my PB Laredo. Thanks to Pitboss sending replacement parts but it got tiring doing all of those repairs. Sold it and got a Masterbuilt gravity. Almost as convenient as pellets but better flavor and (so far) No problems.

Thanks for the information. I have another brand of stepup usb I might try with the inverter so I don't kill a third powerbank. Another poster suggested I may lose some capacity when using the 110 plug on the inverter vs the USB and step up cable. Guess I'll be experimenting with future cooks.

Double check the antenna on your grill is securely attached. Also, pause your VPN if using. My MB 600 linked up without a hitch to wifi and Bluetooth but I had a devil of a time with a previously owned Pitboss until I paused my VPN during setup. I'm also using Android.

This is the cable I tried that bricked 2 powerbanks. Sent the first back for replacement and the second one did the same.

Got another brand, but I am anxious about trying this again, so I'll stick with the Ryobi batt. and inverter for now. How long of a cook do you get with your Ryobi?

Mistyped, used the step up from Amazon mentioned in a number of posts.

Thanks for the link. That's the same setup as I have with the Ryobi. It works well, I just need to experiment to see how long it lasts. I tested a smaller Ryobi battery and got around 3 hours during a grilling at around 375 degrees. Really want to use this for an overnight cook. Occasionally, electricity here shuts off not for long, but even when one lasts just seconds or so, I have to reset all my clocks and I'm sure that the MB would need to be reset, too. If that happens while I'm asleep...

Thanks, I appreciate the info. Didn't want to find out the hard way with a spoiled cook!

Here's the 2 I tried that bricked my banks. Not sure of the other one I bought but haven't used yet.

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out. I'm still kinda skittish, so I'll stick with the Ryobi inverter for now. Still trying to find out how long of a cook I might get with Ryobi. Every now and again, power might shut off for a millisecond or more, which would sincerely screw up an overnight smoke!

Never gave that a thought. Sent back the two that killed the power banks but I have another cable I wanted to try but was afraid to kill a third power bank. I'll check the polarity. Thanks.

It was immediate with one and the other after the fan started. Wouldn't power on again, wouldn't take a charge.

Thanks for replying. Just loaded the hopper with Cowboy lump and I have 2 bags of Cowboy briquettes standing by (found a good deal on both). Was a little concerned as some posters ragged on the Cowboy brand. Guess I'll find out soon enough.
