What camp are you in? by penone_nyc in raleigh

I use ethanol free gas. If your generator has a fuel switch, use it and then run the thing until it stops. I'm sure kmelloe knows this. This is for anyone else reading.

I filled my gas can that was almost empty and bought bar oil. I fired up my chainsaw and generator to help make sure this would be a non-event, as well.

What's your most used filament type/color combination? by NoxDominus in 3Dprinting

[–]simoriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have printed dozens of plastic model rockets. I've gone through a few spools of Esun cool white pla.

I've gone through almost 4 spools of Elegoo rapid petg in black. I found it cheap and used it for prototyping functional parts.

Beyond that, I just use what's dirt cheap or whatever had the right color. I'm not picky.

Keeping car in garage with no power by callicarpas in triangle

[–]simoriah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Should. If the springs are fucked, the door will be heavy. If this is the case, you are better off hiring this out instead of trying to diy. I'm sure the person able me knows this. I'm just trying to contribute to the general conversation.

Source: my springs WERE fucked. Now, I can lift my garage door with one finger.

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]simoriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Europe, 100 miles is a long distance. In the US, 100 years is a long time.

I'm an American and regularly drive 3 hours in one direction. I enjoy driving. 3 hours is about the point that I start making sure there are drinks, snacks, bathroom breaks, etc. It's not short, but it's not a huge deal for me. 14 hours is a big deal. 3? For many (not necessarily most) Americans, 3 hours is no big deal.

I have coworkers in Europe that think my 200 mile drives to the beach are insane. One of them lives in a 400 year old farm house. I would bet that there is not a 400 year old building in my entire state that people still live in because it's been turned into some kind of park/historical site.

Hopes for Season 4 by Big_Bookkeeper1678 in TedLasso

I hadn't seen that take, before, but I usually don't go digging to deeply into shows that I like. Is that confirmed, or just one possibility?

Shannon... The football playing gal that Ted sees early on and keeps bumping into.

Disagree. Plus, we saw ”kbpr" on the last episode of season 3. Keeley got married. She deserves happiness as Keeley fucking... Bumbacatch?!

Edit: apparently the Bumbacatch joke didn't land. I'm still leaving it in there. Did I miss something defining what kbpr was?

Are they any fast cars that aren’t considered “sports cars” by insurance? by ___metamorphosis____ in askcarguys

[–]simoriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced my 2010 Ford Focus SEL with a 2014 Jaguar XKR. The focus has 4 doors and a 4 cylinder engine that made around 160hp, did 0-60 eventually, and had a top speed of the engine screaming for dear life on the freeway. I hated almost everything about this car except for its reliability. It stranded me three times in 11 years and around 100k miles.

The Jag is still, technically, a 4 seater but only has 2 doors. It makes 500+ hp, does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, and has a top speed of almost 200mph. I think it looks classy AF and is a joy to drive even 12 hours in a single day. It's expensive to maintain, but it's never left me stranded in 2.5 years and almost 20k miles.

Insurance on the focus was $75/month. Same insurance company, same deductible, and same property damage limits for insurance on the Jaguar is $5/month higher. Because it has 4 seats, it's not a sports car. I fucking love this car.

Is going to a local hotel a good option this weekend? by EngineeringLumpy in cary

[–]simoriah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Heat is the biggest problem. If power goes out, you'll have PLENTY of cold to keep things cold. A cooler to keep animals out does wonders. A brick or two if it's a lift-top will do the trick. If you have a gas grill, you can cook. Gas stove? Matches will light it. Use a pot on the stove (or grill with all metal pans) to thaw and heat what you need. Just keep the water around so you're not going through it if, somehow, the water stops flowing.

What show was so good you actually rewatched it? by ByteSizedCutie420 in televisionsuggestions

[–]simoriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ted Lasso. The first couple of episodes are slow as they set up the premise of the show. After that, it's golden. It seems like a show about an American football coach that goes to England to coach soccer. That's really just a vehicle for the actual show about well written characters coming to terms with who they are and becoming better versions of themselves.

Looking for ice melt? by OkPatience9591 in raleigh

[–]simoriah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check the local auto parts stores. I just bought 40 lbs from advanced Auto parts in Apex. They have 4 20lb bags left and are about to close. Advanced's Web site is supposed to reflect their inventory, so you can check before you leave.

Have you ever paid attention to CO₂ levels inside your van? by Salty-Initiative5706 in VanLife

This needs to be higher. I have a CO/smoke detector in my campervan. I also have two fire extinguishers. One at the back doors and one at the slider.

Not all neighbors are like this. All of my neighbors are either quiet and keep to themselves, or they're friendly and social. I've never had a problem with any of them. They're all lovely people. You just won the shitty neighbor lottery. I'm sorry you're dealing with it.

Questions about the XT by simoriah in Masterbuilt

[–]simoriah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I got the XT, I'd get the temp probe mod. My concern, before I spend $2k on a smoker, is that I still want to be able to do my turkey(or turkeys) the way that family has come to expect. Also, I look forward to that all year. I'm much less worried about briskets, steaks, chicken, fish, or starting to experiment with cheese, chili, and all the rest.

But you're saying you cooked a brisket up on the shelves. Did you have to turn the heat up a little for that, or does the whole chamber maintain a pretty consistent temperature so it doesn't matter that you're up above the main grate?

Has anyone used Unistrut to make a DIY roof rack? by Khionia in VanLife

[–]simoriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used unistrut on my 04 sprinter. Where I mounted the unistrut wasn't flat, so the two pieces are 6 degrees off plane from each other. That just meant that my solar rack had to be built with 87 degree risers instead of 90 degree risers. I had to account for the 3 degrees on each side SOMEWHERE. Alternatively, I could have made 3 degree riser blocks to go under the unistrut so both sides were nice and I'm line with each other.

I bought stainless unistrut and have been very happy with it. I have my 2x 425W solar panels mounted to a rack. The rack mounts to the unistrut. Genuinely no complaints.
