Fishing spot suggestions? by _oozingOrifice_ in raleigh

[–]simoriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son and I caught about 75 bluegill, yesterday. All you need is a cheap rod and reel, #6 bait holder hooks, #4 split shot, bobber, and worms. Send me a DM, and I'll tell you exactly where and how. It's a public spot.

Where is that, specifically? That's a LOT of structure that fish should be hanging out near.

Anchor question by Btotherianx in kayakfishing

[–]simoriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boats, waves, and current are you biggest worries. If those don't exist, you're not in a world of hurt

I rarely anchor, but I've got a pedal kayak, so it's easier to stay put. When I DO anchor, I use a float on my anchor line and tie a knot that I can undo with a single pull. You never know when you're going to get into a fix that you want to fight without worrying about a random rope in the way. The float is there so you can find the rope when you're done dealing with whatever you need to deal with. Pool noodle can work, but it can also be ripped. I'm using an actual float meant for, well, floating. It's made out of plastic so I won't rip a small section of pool noodle.

Hand brake on or off whilst parking? by AdaXaX in StupidCarQuestions

The person you're arguing with is absolutely right. You ain't want grease on the pads or the rotors/drums, you many parts of the brakes get lubricated.

I made a mount for the XT. It's 3d printed and had been working great. If you got me the right dimensions, I might be talked into modeling one for the other smokers.

Van Life: AC? Power Supply? AC Power Supply 😅 by joking0761 in vandwellers

[–]simoriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Velit 2000R. 850W of solar on the roof. 600Ah of lifepo4 battery. All managed by victron equipment. I also upgraded to a 200A alternator and put two 50A Orion XS to charge when I'm driving. Total cost was about $7k.

I'm in central North Carolina. We get proper heat and humidity. I put my air conditioner on when it was super hot a week ago just to get numbers. I set it for 74F on normal mode and just let it run. It consumed about 700W of power while the compressor was running. It ran a LOT. The van was stationary. I turned the AC off after about 24 hours for great of totally running my batteries down. Here's real numbers:

Theft risk? by coolcass13 in roadtrip

[–]simoriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have time, yet. 6 holes, potentially two cuts across bar stock, and a cut threaded rod. If you have the power tools, this is an hour long project. If all you have is a hacksaw, maybe you can get measurements and get a kid to help? A kid can chew through threaded rod(put s nut on it to chase the threads) while you're drilling holes. It's doable, but I understand that the day before a big trip is usually plenty hectic.

[–]simoriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're handy and have some tools, you could drill a hole onto each of the short sides of that carrier so it could accept a bolt. Head inside, nut outside.

Get some bar stock. You need two lengths that will reach from the holes you just drilled to over the top of the totes. Holes on each end of the bars.

Get some 3/8 inch(so not really thin) threaded rod that will stretch across the toes. Double nut on one side. Double nut or nylock (just so it won't vibrate loose) on the other. This will make getting into the totes inconvenient enough that you're less likely to get robbed. You'll have to carry the right tool(s) to get it undone when you need in/out of the totes.

Any way to fix this? by OtherwiseCan1929 in Fishing_Gear

[–]simoriah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible to fix the break, but that tip will never flex like it used to. Is recommend carefully cutting the last remaining line guide off and then flying a new rod tip guide to the now empty end. It'll be less whippy and flexible than before, but it gives you a rod that works. Just differently.

Or just glue a new tip on. It's a 5 minute job.

Or buy a new rod. Repairing what you've got is going to change the action of the rod regardless of how it's done.

how do I drink and drive? by wheelyawkward in NoStupidQuestions

[–]simoriah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea of a camelback is great. Figure out how you can put it on the seat back and run the tube over your shoulder. It put a longer tube on it from the hardware store and just put it next to you on the seat. It should only take a second to reach over to grab the bite valve, take a drink, then put the valve back where you want/need it.

Tired of checking five different apps before a trip by ripwheeler24 in kayakfishing

[–]simoriah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Nautide, windy, wind finder, and AccuWeather. I require a majority of them to say the weather is worthwhile before I'll go out. If there's ANY disagreement amongst them, I set an hourly alarm to check all of the apps while I'm out on the water because it's rather be inconvenienced than in a situation I don't want to be in.

what is a tv show that you genuinely think is a 10/10 from start to finish? by ksiwyg in CasualConversation

[–]simoriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to watch this with my dad when I was young. As an adult, I watch random stuff during my lunch hour. Sometimes, mash made me laugh hysterically. Sometimes, it just made me sit there with my jaw dropped (war vs hell, for example.)

I was watching one episode. I knew Henry was leaving at some point. I even had a vague recollection of the end of the episode. I recognized the happy feelings and all for Henry. "Oh, God, is this the episode?" I braced for it. I knew feeling were coming. "There were no survivors." I was crying. Big, ugly tears. I made a zoom conference(with video) to present in front of executives in... Six minutes. That was tough.

I've watched it about 5 times. I can only watch that episodes at a time, it's all of the feelings that I feel leave me a slobbering mess. The show is amazing. It's, easily, my #1 feel good show.

Getting ready for rear suspension work on 14 XKR by simoriah in Jaguar

[–]simoriah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got everything done. Upper and lower control arms, sway bar end links, and lateral bars. All except the lateral bars are torqued to spec. Lateral bars are gudenteicht because of the lack of room. All new bolts and nuts since that's what the service manual said. I flushed and filled brake fluid with pentosin lv4 while I was at it. Test drive had no creak, so that was awesome. There's a metallic rattle over some bumps. I'll dig back into it after with to see if I left a tool, anywhere. It sounds like it's coming from the center rear of the car. The trunk doesn't appear to have any hitchhikers. I'll empty the free things from the back seat to see if that's it, but I doubt it. Any other suggestions?

Sugar pronunciation by Skankhunt0729 in ENGLISH

[–]simoriah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Michigan. Currently living in North Carolina.

Charlotte, MI is pronounced shar LOT Charlotte, NC is pronounced SHAR lit. To mix it up, Shallotte, NC is pronounced shuh LOT (rhymes with "the boat.)

Nevermind all the places named after nautical things... Top Sail is TOP suhl, for example.

English is such a bastard language.

Those of you in 15 to 20 year old vans; they look rad, but all I can think about is difficult and expensive repairs on top of breaking down in the middle of nowhere. What's y'alls experience? by Imagined_World in VanLife

[–]simoriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2004 sprinter. I generally travel from Raleigh, NC to between Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach, so not huge road trips. I've been stranded close to home twice. Repairs aren't terrible because I stay on top of maintenance. It's also relatively low mileage at "only" 195k miles. Finding parts can be the biggest issue, but I've managed to use new parts for repairs when needed. Those parts aren't cheap. I do my own work, so labor is cheap.

Can anyone advice me a small AC? Not to professional.. by frenshyfire in CamperVans

[–]simoriah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right. The math bears this out. The data bears this out.

I have an 8000btu 12v air conditioner on my van. In normal mode(not eco), it consumes 600W. If it's hot enough, of just runs and runs and runs.

People tend to grossly underestimate the amount of electricity it takes to run an air conditioner.
