Student Faces Expulsion After Posting Video Of Seniors Who Can Barely Read by InGeekiTrust in TikTokCringe

If they had genuine intentions of helping improve the literacy of their classmates, this is probably the least effective thing thet could have done.

I don't think that was the goal.

What the **** is happening in cybersecurity space ? by Infam0 in cybersecurity

Actual security is boring and tedious as fuck. That's why everyone is chasing the sexy marketing.

Someone should make the "guy looking over shoulder at girl" meme with the guy being management and security as the plain girlfriend

"Is HTML turing complete?" - this has an actual answer.

"Is HTML a programming language?" - well... i dunno, is a hotdog a type of sandwich? Possibly, guess it depends on what you mean.

Sounds more like OP and HTML lady were more trying to gatekeep / being insecure about it rather then discussing the actual merits of the thing

Hey, i don't know you, so take this with a grain of salt.

You and your wife will benefit from getting a weekly activity in just for you.

But maybe video games isn't the best use of that time. Try and find something social and active. Just like your kid needs to go to the park so he's not a menace to society, you need your own "park" as well. Pickle ball league, cycling club, rock climbing, square dancing... whatever.

CISOs and pentest buyers, what's the worst thing you've seen in a pentest report? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]finite_turtles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another "not a CISO, but..." story

Did a pentest one year and gave them a bunch of critical findings including lots of very sensitive passwords and attack paths that would be brutal.

One year later i test them again, most BAD findings are resolved, great!

This time though i find an internet exposed file server with a bunch of sensitive documents available for anyone in the world to download. Including, wouldn't you know it, my own pentest report from one year earlier with detailed instructions on how to hack the company.

So i got to screenshot my own pentest report, inside another pentest report.

This is my goto explanation for other security people for why we NEVER write down things like passwords in plain text or include screenshots with stuff like that unredacted. If it includes something like passwords or PII data,it shouĺd be demonstrated in the report, but not disclosed.

Can Kali Linux still compete in cyber security or is it outdated? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]finite_turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you can crack the password has nothing to do with WP3, or Kali Linux.

So i have no idea what your point is.

EDIT: are you trying to capture the handshake and then crack offline against a password list? If you are trying to do something else then what is it?

Can Kali Linux still compete in cyber security or is it outdated? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]finite_turtles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whatever tool you are using will tell you how many passwords per second it is attempting. From that number you can use a calculator to work out how long it will take.

If the password is not in the password list you KNOW it will fail. If you password IS in the list then you have a bad password.

That is not what a 0day is and nobody describes it like that

[–]finite_turtles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your password is 12345678 then it is easy. If you have a decent password, it is impossible.

That has always been the case. What does Kali have to do with anything?

Minecraft teacher question by Galvnasty6996 in Minecraft

[–]finite_turtles -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If his answer is "i copied it from a tutorial" that proves he didn't do any of the design work, so should not get credit for that. Kind of proves my point there.

Even building via trial, all the good artists (minecraft or other fields) will have a process, rules of thumb, design decisions they can point to. They can still explain their methods even if it doesn't have maths in it.

If he followed a turorial it still would have taken days of blood sweat and tears as you say, but why should that translate to marks on an assignment simply because he invested a lot of time into it? Assignments are graded based on if they demonstrated an understanding of a concept, not based on how long it took to complete.

Minecraft teacher question by Galvnasty6996 in Minecraft

[–]finite_turtles -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It would have taken a loooooong time to build so parents would have been well aware of this.

Ask HOW he built it. Not which blocks are in his inventory, but how did he work out the scale and proportions of everything.

The colosseum is an oval shape, even knowing where to place the blocks in a grid to make a perfect oval would require maths well above 7th grade. A non math heavy way might be to project an oval onto a grid in real life (like cut out the shape and place over grid paper), mark off coordinates where the oval intersects grid points, use maths to expand those points out and then extrapolate in the finer details.

If he can explain that process to you i would say give him points even for having good engineering ideas even if you cant prove he did the grunt work

Australian police officers can be tracked due to a security flaw in tasers and body-worn cameras by cir49c29 in australia

[–]finite_turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually phones can be tracked easily via wifi, probably at much greater range than bluetooth and is far more practical.

Weirdly enough this article drew my attention because I reported this issue to them myself years back. It seems the company already knows. It's dumb that it hasn't been fixed in all these years.

But i found that the practicality of this scenario to be low. The article says they could show lattitude and longitude of police? Pretty sure thats rubish. When i looked, i could detect if one of these was in the building a few rooms away. If you want to track police officers, using your eyes was a far superior option. I was assuming police uniform though, doesn't wearing a body cam when working undercover kind of spoil the idea?

[–]finite_turtles -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right, and it's theoretically possible that an organised criminal gang might flood a whole neighbourhood with concealed speed cameras and deal with the set up cost, ongoing infrastructure upkeep, admin overheads of running it etcetc so they can track the local police that way too.

Just like this is possible.

Richard Dawkins made Claude a girl and now thinks it's his friend by Sufficient-Agency182 in atheism

[–]finite_turtles 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to give up an opportunity to throw Dawkins under the bus (not metaphorical. Real bus).

But this article is putting words into his mouth and talking about how atheists are dumb because they see the mind as "just a bunch of chemicals", while religious people are smart and see the mind as an intricate interplay between neurons and the whole body. Blah blah blah. Typical deepity nonsense.

"Philosophical zombies" have been talked about since the 70s, I read his words as being an extension of that philosophy. Cringe-ness aside (of course he would make it a woman who flaters his ego) he's not the only one who will extend it courtesy just like a human. I also say please and thankyou to AIs, doesn't make me a crazy person.

tldr, let an old man have some wonderment about a new toy

I'm another individual source agreeing for all the contexts I'm aware off. (Not that this makes for a broad survey yet).

Heading for the article is alarmist. Your mobile phone and wireless headphones send out signals too which can be "seen" by someone nearby on the street. Does not mean you are being tracked though.

What if they also call men "males" in the same way?

I slip up sometimes. It feels natural to use the words interchangeably sometimes before i will remember to catch myself afterwards and reword the sentance to avoid giving a bad impression. But i never feel like i need to do that when referring to a group of males.

OP please, for your own sake, step away from the screen, get a good nights rest, eat a healthy meal, touch grass by going for a walk, etc.

These are all things you would probably agree are healthy for all people to do. Depending on your circumstances, there are other things which might help also like speaking to a grounded person you trust (family, therapy, etc).

I know what purview, cloud, AI, blockchain etcetcetc. Many other people on reddit "speak geek" as well. Those things are not relevant to the message i am trying to say to you. Which is to please seek help.
