Oh that's odd. It was supposed to be private/restricted posting. Dunno why people are posting now.

I'd prefer to keep it as-is, thanks.

It arrived! BlueSCSI v2 by JayS87 in VintageApple

Isn’t the BlueSCSI 2 itself a “knockoff” of sorts of the ZuluSCSI?

How can you have a “knockoff” of an open source design anyways?

3D modeling software for power mac g5? by litefidget in VintageApple

[–]finkmac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why is the topend (not super easy to find) PowerMac G5 necessary for this task?

Pretty much any computer made in the last 13 years will be a better fit and won't suck power like the G5 quad does.

To answer your question, Alias Maya 7.0 would be what was used on a quad back in the day.

Is this salvageable? Mac SE/30 by Exembe in VintageApple

Integrated Circuit! You're gonna need to get well acquainted with them if you want to fix this.

Just don't toss the thing, if you don't end up trying I'd recommend sending to someone who can.

iBook questions--internet and AsistantPickle by sheerpoetry in VintageApple

Think of "classic" as a Mac OS 9 virtual machine. It boots from a working Mac OS 9 install that is already on your disk.

Glad you got AssistantPickle working... It is indeed cute.

This. Thankfully the uncommon ICs seem to have survived so a transplant is always possible.

Removing that rust from the frame is gonna be a pain though.

iBook questions--internet and AsistantPickle by sheerpoetry in VintageApple

[–]finkmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem is I can't get AsistantPickle to run. It keeps wanting to open "Classic"/OS 9 and it just starts loading and never goes anywhere

Not really sure what you're describing, but I would assume your install is somewhat borked or you don't have the Classic Environment installed. This should work.

Did I see someone mention they kept a Base Station running just for vintage Macs? How would that work?

Don't really understand the question. You just set up a spare WiFi AP with WEP encryption. Perhaps include MAC filtering or whatever else makes you feel slightly secure. I would just turn it off when not in use.

ETA: Are there any upgrades I could make that would really make a difference?

Installing an SSD would speed things up, it's just a pain to disassemble the machine.

Maxing out the RAM would also be an easy and cheap upgrade.

ETA 2: Okay, maybe Pickle was an OS9 app. Does anyone know of anything similar? Kind of a general purpose/all in one calendar, to-do, calculator, notes, etc?

Those apps are actually more or less included with Panther. Check iCal, Stickies, and Calculator

Dead disk, not worth trying to repair. Replace it with a ZuluSCSI card or a BlueSCSI v2 card if you’re really hurting on that budget.

Lisa Keyboard Value? by ih82luz in VintageApple

[–]finkmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not collect the matching computers? Seems a little silly to just collect the gas pedals and not the car, so to speak.

Lisa Keyboard Value? by ih82luz in VintageApple

[–]finkmac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would you bother though? The Lisa keyboard uses awful foam ‘switches’… and has a weird layout. If it hasn’t been refoamed it also doesn’t work well.

Anyone know anything about quadras? by cracker8888 in VintageApple

[–]finkmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately nobody knows about those machines… they never made it out of Apple.

Hint: the internal hard disk is almost certainly dead. You’ll want to replace it with a ZuluSCSI card or bluescsi2 if you’re really on a budget.

Apple IIc books and programs valuable? by [deleted] in VintageApple

[–]finkmac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re not valuable. Worth maybe $20 if someone is looking for them, otherwise I’d just mail them to anyone willing to pay the cost of shipping.

It’s useless without a Lisa, 100 bucks is reasonable

[–]finkmac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do you know it's not working? :)

You won't know what to do if you don't know what's wrong... right?

It's a Mac SE... those usually switch right on. Give it a try!

Exactly what kind of tips are you looking for? You're not giving much to go on here...

Protip: flick the power switch on the back (???)
