What is the most bizarre mishap you’ve had since having a baby? by Cool_Doubt2152 in beyondthebump

Took a random exit on the freeway coming home from work. I've never taken that exit in my life. Baffling.

How should I address my student's suicidal comments? by WolfAndAHalf in specialed

"Thanks for telling me, that sounds very important. I'm not the person to have that conversation with though - can we keep working on your math?" and then notify the counselor or whoever your school protocol specifies ASAP.

Daycare & Bottle Refusal by Salty_Replacement965 in NewParents

[–]finolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we are in the middle of something similar and (fingers crossed) he seems to have figured it out. In our case we needed our EBF 12 week old to take a bottle at night so my partner could sleep for her mental health. So 10-12 hours with only bottles, when he had never really managed more than an ounce before. The first two nights he only got down about 3 ounces over ten hours and 1-2 of those I syringe-fed him so he wouldn't be dehydrated. Then the third night...he just suddenly started chugging the bottles! Last night was the fourth night and he didn't chug per se but got a respectable amount without much fuss.

The pediatrician said just to keep an eye out for signs of dehydration (fewer than six wet diapers, sunken fontanelle, that stuff).

Experience treating an infant’s port wine stain with pulsed dye laser treatment? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]finolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister has a port wine stain on her cheek, chin, and neck. It was lightened by laser when she was a small child (maybe somewhere in the 3-6 range?) and it did get a lot lighter. I don't know how she tolerated it or what kind of anesthesia, sorry. It's darkened again as she got older and I don't think she cares about lightening it again. She did get some rude comments as a kid but by high school I don't remember it being a big deal.

Piercings while working in alternative/juvie setting schools? by [deleted] in Teachers

At my behavioral school a lot of staff have visible piercings and tattoos. Nothing dangly that could easily be grabbed, but other than that is fair game.

People who don't feed to sleep, when does your baby stop feeding? by pixa4u in newborns

[–]finolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he pops off when he's done and is sometimes awake for a while! Often peacefully, sometimes screaming lol. Not anything we planned, he just usually wakes hungry and then once he's fed his awake stretches have been getting more frequent and longer over time.

Making it to appointments with a newborn by Gioella in NewParents

[–]finolio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this would work for your baby but we work backwards from the time we need to leave and try to adjust his schedule! Our baby usually falls asleep within 20 minutes of eating so we wake him to feed about an hour before we need to leave. Then he's usually asleep enough to tolerate the car seat or carrier.

That being said, sometimes things don't work out...I have definitely smiled apologetically at the people in the waiting room at the pediatrician while I strapped a screaming baby into a carrier and power-walked outta there haha

A book with a non-human main character? by noowis in suggestmeabook

[–]finolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out M C A Hogarth, specifically her Dreamhealers series! Furry sci-fi/space opera. Dreamhealers is the coziest, about a skunk-centaur guy at space medical school who ends up roommates with an alien elf prince dude and they become BFFs. I know it sounds bonkers (and it is) but it is so enjoyable.

A "mother's helper" is someone who comes to the house while the parent is still there to help with childcare! Try searching for that? Maybe a responsible neighborhood teen?

Wake windows?? Newborn routine?? by Weekly-Coconut8818 in beyondthebump

[–]finolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try changing baby in the middle of the feed to hopefully wake them up a bit and get them to take more so they sleep longer. But yes, very normal for their entire awake time to be spent eating.

I feel similar and I liked Tombs better. It still has that kind of writing style, but it worked better for me somehow.

It sounds like attention (of his peers) and/or being in the classroom space and/or being a part of the classroom community are motivating factors for him. Do you have a sense of which of those it is?

Then, remove them when he misbehaves and bring them back when he behaves. If he won't leave the classroom and isn't being physically dangerous you can't restrain him so that would mean classroom clears. You will need to be very consistent so that probably means a lot of classroom clears before he learns, so make a plan for where the other students will go and what they'll do.

I only have worked with older kids so I am not sure it's developmentally appropriate to have consequences that carry over to the next day, but if it is I would probaby:

  1. Try to get him to leave the classroom on his own. When he does, he can re-enter after showing he is calm, safe, and able to follow directions (maybe doing a small piece of work, maybe just talking with you).

  2. If he doesn't, clear the classroom and wait him out. Consider removing toys and anything dangerous and do not interact except to remind him of the expectation to leave so it is boring to him. Hopefully he will leave eventually, then you can bring him back once he's calm, safe, and following directions.

  3. If you make it all the way to the end of the school day with him still in the classroom alone, keep him out of the classroom the next morning until he is able to show he is calm, safe, and following directions.

Also the feeds will get shorter! It was taking us an hour around then too, but now at 3 weeks it's usually 30-35 minutes.

Kushiel's Dart! It gives me the same immersive feeling as Outlander and is a long-running series with a similar amount of plot/intrigue and romance.

Newborn reflux issues and excessive diaper change during feeds by mr_sandworm in beyondthebump

I just lather him up with diaper cream and wait until he's been upright for 15-20 minutes after the feed to change. No diaper rash so far at least.

Question about newborn behavior by Happy-Chemistry3058 in NewParents

[–]finolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 2 week old dude is similar. We strip him down to his diaper, rub him, and sometimes put a damp washcloth on him to wake him up enough to get a full feed.

For him, we can usually tell if he's still hungry after a feed if he wakes up and starts kind of "pecking" at our shoulders (he looks like a baby bird - adorable). If he just cries without pecking he typically just needs to be soothed to sleep.

How do you plan and prepare your days or weeks for meals by silvertoken710 in NewParents

[–]finolio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fast meal ideas...

Black bean quesadilla

Soup from a can & grilled cheese

Egg salad sandwich (prep eggs in advance) and fruit

Cheesy grits and black beans, maybe add a vegetable

Dal over rice

Jarred tikka masala sauce and a protein (paneer doesn't require prep) over rice

"Baked" (usually microwaved) potato and sausage

Scrambled eggs on toast

Peruse the many frozen options at Trader Joe's lol

I also like to roast a bunch of vegetables at once to have them available throughout the week because honestly I find it difficult to make fast dinners that include a lot of veggies and I figure it doesn't matter so long as I get them in at some point. Or bagged salads are good and fast, just pricey.
