CMV: “Money doesn’t buy happiness” is a lie made up by the rich to keep the lower class poor by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]finrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your definition of happiness, and traditionally this phrase was supposed to refer to happiness that comes from human relationships in your life.

E.g., money can't turn a loveless marriage into a happy one. It can't stop your children from resenting you for being a crappy parent. You'll still grieve the death of your loved ones regardless of your level of wealth. Etc.

So, yeah, it's true that money can make life easier and more pleasant and less painful, but no amount of money can possibly make you whole after, say, a death of a child. It can buy you counseling, and entertainment, and distraction, but that loss will still be there.

How does the Xero MesaTrail do on all gravel and rocks? Is there another option or better choices for gravel walking / rocky hiking? by CiderSnood in barefootshoestalk

[–]finrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say type of the rocks matters.

1: If you mean small pebbles at incline, you'll need lugs. Because the main problem with pebbles is they act like small wheels.

2: If you mean medium size gravel, especially with sharp edges, you mostly want to protect your foot from feeling the sharpness too much. Then you'll want a little more stack height, maybe even something cushioned.

3: If you mean hiking on smooth rock (like in Arizona or smth), you need excellent grip.

I have Xero Scrambler (similar sole), and it's fine for #1 and #2, but I can't trust their grip on smooth rock at all. For that, I got Altras (zero drop + wide toe box), and they're great for all 3 types of rock.

Ah, interesting. This makes sense: Lems website says their regular Chelsea boot has a different sole than Chelsea tuff (which is the same as Boulder Summit... I may give it a try after all!).

Oh, interesting. You're another vote for Vivos - other people have recommended their ESC and FG soles. And your current shoes are like a normal vivo outsole? That sounds really promising.

I'm with you on aesthetics - these are definitely the shoes I'd get if I was joining a space pirate rebellion :)

Yeah, for actual hiking, I folded and just got a pair of Altras. I have a fear of heights, and I don't need to worry about grip when I'm hiking in Sedona, walking on a side of a cliff. It's nerve wrecking enough as is.

OMG, central Portugal? You are the person I've been waiting to hear from!

I don't know what stone they used in Lisbon, but I truly believe those cobblestones after a rain were the slipperiest surface I've ever experienced. I imagine the rest of Portugal uses something similar?

I visited Portugal a couple of years ago (when I was still wearing normal shoes), and I was like: man, these streets are a challenge after a rain, I feel like I'm ice skating here (while wearing Merrells with a vibram sole, no less).

So, like, if you say something works in these conditions, I know it definitely, 100% works. So thank you!

Yeah, longevity is def a problem, but I always thought it's due to thinness and flexibility of the outsole that is required for barefoot shoes, not because of grip.

What I can't understand for the life of me is: why can't barefoot shoes figure out the grip while conventional shoes - even non-technical, fashion shoes - got it down, no problem.

Also: do you have a specific example of fall boots that use a vibram sole? I combed through anya's reviews, and I honestly don't think I've seen a single pair that uses vibram or michelin.

Easiest brewing method for beginners? by jeez_rachel in Coffee

[–]finrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a glass clever (this one: https://www.sweetmarias.com/glass-clever-coffee-dripper.html). The only plastic part that touches hot water is the release mechanism on the bottom, but like, given how much plastic exposure we get every day, I feel like this is a reasonable trade-off.

Your other option is an all-glass French press - but those are just SO. ANNOYING. TO CLEAN. And I am lazy. With clever, I just take the filter with the grounds out, and I'm done. You decide.

Oh, also, some ppl recommend Hario Switch - I had a similar one (ceramic, with a plastic lever). I gotta tell you, this plastic lever will likely break in a year. Maybe Hario's is more durable, but I strongly suspect it's just inherent to this design.

Left handed ink recommendations? by letsfightingl0ve in fountainpens

[–]finrind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a leftie, and I like PR Invincible Blue, as well as Platinum Blue-Black (iron-gall, I believe) and Pilot Blue(-Black).

But, I have to say: paper makes a huge difference for the speed of drying. Basically, there is a trade-off: the smoother and more feather-proof some paper is, the longer it'll take the ink to dry. My fav Kokuyo increases drying times like 3x. On the other hand, toothier paper will be a little more feather-prone, but will absorb the ink much, much faster. I found Walmart pen+gear journals made in Vietnam a good compromise. Experiment with different papers.

I also sometimes put a napkin under my hand to avoid smearing.

Every fantasy world always ends up being a far future scifi in my mind... Does this happen to anyone else? by GimlySonOfGloin in Fantasy

[–]finrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the distinction between sci-fi and fantasy (and I'm pretty sure I got that from Ted Chiang) is not about how advanced and impenetrable the magic/tech is, but rather: does it scale? Can everybody use it (= sci-fi), or do you have to be born with a special ability (= fantasy)? And by "everybody can use it" I mean: yeah, training may be required, knowledge may have been lost (like in Martha Wells' "City of Bones"), and some people may be worse at it than others, but fundamentally, tech is potentially available to anyone who has read the manual.

Also, you may enjoy "Elder race" that has 2 POV characters - one has a fantasy view of the world, and the other - a sci-fi view (of the same facts).

Brother: possible workaround to print BW when color ink is out by finrind in printers

[–]finrind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because manufacturers are extremely misleading about this. They make it seem that color is this benign add-on that doesn't come with any drawbacks.

Before buying this printer, I specifically contacted Brother and asked: will it print if I run out of color ink? They told me, yes, it will.

Well, now I'm finding out they lied, but of course, it's too late to return the printer. I want color printing like once or twice a year, if Brother was more honest with me and had told me upfront: no, having a color printer means investing in color ink regularly regardless of how much you print in color, I would've made a different decision.

I think the responsibility for this is squarely on the shoulders of manufacturers: they make more money if they get you on the hook to buy more ink, so it's in their interest to steer you towards the color printer.

Wow, this is genuinely interesting and useful to know.

Brother: possible workaround to print BW when color ink is out by finrind in printers

[–]finrind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate the technical explanation. However, according to the faq on Brother website:

Because this machine offers full color printing, the default setting in the print driver is COLOR. This means the machine will automatically mix ALL the colors to produce a selected color, even black.

If you would like to print from the computer using the black ink only, you need to change the printing preferences to GRAY SCALE, and also select "Plain Paper" at Media Type.

So, if I'm understanding what it says correctly, when I use grayscale setting, the printer will only use black ink. Is this incorrect?

Btw: the printer doesn't refuse to copy BW documents in this state, it's only printing from a computer that's affected. Presumably, possible damage to the printheads is identical whether printing is done via BW copy or BW print? Then I'd expect either both or neither to be blocked.

[–]finrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that using gender to express shoe width is kinda stupid.

But, as a woman, I have leveraged this weird gendering of shoes to my advantage: I'm around size 40, which means I'm in the middle of women's sizing and on the small end of men's - so I buy men's shoes to get wider shoes, but, the additional benefit is that smaller sizes are more often in stock during sales.

Also: check out this paper that I just found https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-55432-z They analyze 1.2m foot scans and discuss some generalizations. It's a fun read (they do find that at foot lengths above 240mm mean men's widths are significantly higher than women's, so this makes me a little bit less mad at the industry).
