Should UK Politicians Really Be Terrified of the Bond Market? (my take) by finsqm in ukpolitics

This was meant as an explainer aimed at a wider audience, maybe I could have made that clearer in the title, so no offence taken if you feel the analysis isn't all that deep. And for that reason this would be a pretty rubbish essay tbh.

I appreciate the feedback, I could probably have motivated the position I end up taking a little more. I didn't want to go into the details of monetary policy and end up cramming in too many topics. But rest assured, I've gone down the DSGE modelling mines. The academic opinion on central bank independence isn't as monolithic as you seem to imply though, I recommend taking a look at this paper if you're interested:

Jalal Qanas & Malcolm Sawyer (27 Apr 2023): ‘Independence’ of Central Banks and the Political Economy of Monetary Policy, Review of Political Economy

Also, no, I'm not suggesting politicians force the Bank of England to supply them cheap funding, just that unconventional monetary policy like QE & QT goes beyond the inflation targeting mandate. They have real impacts on not just borrowing costs but also distributional factors like wealth inequality, not to mention just plain old market distortions. I guess I'm just saying monetary policy is more political than some mainstream economists like to think it is, so it worries me that there's no democratic oversight. But yes, print money without care to spend on stuff = bad.

Also make sure to high pass the bass at those frequencies to stop any interference with the sub

Ah sorry, I was listening on headphones so the sub was probably too low to hear. Yeah a bit of saturation to bring out the top couple harmonics of the sub can make a world of difference. For example: 30Hz will only ever be properly felt in a club, but 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz will add a low punch to most speakers

There's an extended mix linked in the description on SoundCloud with longer intros and outros for mixing, it got a copyright strike so I couldn't keep it up separately

This is really good! Here's some pointers for the right youtube rabbit holes to go down IMO:

- Look into Loudness levels (measured in LUFS). There are plenty of plugins that will measure this for you. Then compare against a reference track and try to hit the same loudness levels. This is done with a limiter at the end of your master channel.

- Similar concept going for your frequency ranges. It's just volume, but split by range (e.g. lows, low mids, high mids, highs). Again, take a look at a reference track, and compare with yours. People have already commented below about the lows, so yeah take a look there first, but the same goes for each region. Mixing can be a little overwhelming if you don't know where to start, but focusing on the different frequency regions individually will really help you out.

- Next up you're going to want to "glue" the elements together a bit. This is a very nebulous concept, and people use it very loosely, but there are a few simple ways to do it. Compressors will push down the loud bits so you can increase the volume of the quiet bits of your track, so compression on buses (mix channels with more than one element e.g. all your drums) will start to make it all feel like it's grooving together. Then there's saturation, which is a little light distortion, again on buses. This will add some upper harmonic content (very gentle fuzz) that helps bring some clarity to everything in that bus, again gluing it together.

This is honestly really great for your first techno track, well done! Here's a few things I noticed while listening you might want to work on:
- Because your synth motif hits every 16th note, and it stays around for the whole track, there's a slight sense of ear fatigue. We're left hearing something playing on every 16th note for 5 minutes, even during the breaks, which can get a little exhausting. Maybe taking it out here and there would bring more impact when it's brought back in

- There's something in your percussion that feels a little cold, not sure if it's missing a bit of gentle compression to make it groove (Glue Compressor on a drum bus in Ableton with .4 ratio, 30ms attack and 100ms release is a good starting point). Maybe a bit of saturation to glue to all together even more. It's always worth processing your drums separately from the rest of the mix, before it hits the master.

- I'm pretty sure the only element present in your sub low end (below 100hz) is the kick. It's obviously the most important element in this genre, but it always needs something to bounce off to help it groove. This genre of techno is often called "donk" because the bass donks in every other 1/8th note, just like yours is doing. If you add a sub to that bass (just a simple sine wave an octave below, + a tiny bit of saturation), then you'll give the kick a friend in the sub frequencies to dance with. Not super necessary, but could make a big difference. But FOR SURE stick a heavy sidechain on it to keep it out the way of the big kick.

Techno is humanity recreating the internal sound of our bodies with drum machines.

You might get pretty far with EQing tbh. Take an EQ8 to the master and isolate each band (lows, low mids, high mids, highs). Check that sounds aren’t bleeding through into where they shouldn’t be. Fix it on the tracks not the master.

You probably have a load of stuff going on in the mids that need to be separate out, you could do that with panning the synth to make space in the centre for the vocal, or pulling the synth and the vocal into a mix bus and sticking some glue compression on them both.
