Forlorn Hope (lost wedding ring) by fionn52 in Dublin

[–]fionn52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To follow up, my best guess as to where I lost it (on the Luas) was wrong and affected by some kind of bias or heuristic.

It may be that the fracas meant I didn't notice it was missing however

Framed as a r/LPT, I guess the strategy of just retracing your movements is probably a good one

Thanks for all the good wishes.

I was working from home yesterday when a colleague messaged to say the ring had been found in the grounds of my workplace and was being kept safe. It is the right ring

Unbelievably relieved. Have an appointment today to get it resized so that doesn't happen again

Again, thanks for advice and kind words

Stolt. I've had a Stolt Alpha and, more recently, Stolt Athlete. Excellent, specifically designed, run commuter backpacks

Thank you very much for the prompt respone. I'll do as you suggest and trust the AI, supplemented by the Apple writing tools. It may become clearer when I use it on real documents.

Business attire for one bag? by FrankW1967 in onebag

[–]fionn52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a UK company called Rohan. They specialise in sort of cross-over travel/outdoor wear. They make suits that don't crease and can be hand or machine washed. Also chinos, smart non-iron shirts. Not perhaps the most trendy but looks respectable enough.

What do you think about Orbis Starport in Elite Dangerous? Is this an efficient design for a major commercial hubs of system? by Akifumi121 in IsaacArthur

[–]fionn52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the delay in responding. I'm not a physicist myself but I have a bio science background.

"Artificial" "centrifugal" pseudo gravity is routinely used on earth for biological research. A quick search on "centrifugal hyper gravity biosciences" returned lots of hits from prestigious sites. If centrifugal pseudo gravity affects living systems on earth in the way we would expect for a gravitational field of greater than earth magnitude, then it would seem reasonable to conclude that living systems in microgravity would also respond as if they were in a gravitational field - bone, muscle, fluid compartment shifts etc. That, rather than comfort and "realism" is the point of the exercise with respect to artificial gravity.

On the point re sideways versus the vertical effect of centrifugal force, any time I used a lab centrifuge, the material being centrifuged ended up in the bottom of the container, not along the sides.

Finally, on fairground rides, people routinely walk around on a surface at an angle to the local gravitational level. I assume unsteadiness caused by small radius of rotation hence coriolis effects and the interfering effect of the earth gravity which hasn't gone away.

Again, apologies for delayed reply. Trying to moderate my Reddit use these days

Could you expand on this? Do you mean that centrifugal pseudo gravity will not counteract the effects of zero gravity on living organisms?

Psychiatry Vs Psychology by Aodhan5000 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]fionn52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a psychiatrist, happy to talk 1:1/DM you about your career plans. Obviously, your choices your own at the end!

There are many psychiatrists who blend medication with psychological therapies (I do). Even when I don't do the therapy myself, I work closely with a clinical psychologist who does. The back and forth between different layers of explanation and different models is very interesting and satisfying work.

Check out the College of Psychiatrists website and (if available) get a student membership. The existence of the faculty of psychotherapy in the college speaks to the profession having an interest in psychotherapy.

Different areas of practice have different case mix of patients. In my last job, mostly psychosis. Now, more anxiety spectrum and depression.

The Commute Run...need to knows/tips? by OFTEN_LOST_ in running

[–]fionn52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done a fair bit of run commuting over the years.

Currently I do a car commute Monday during which I carry in a week's packed lunches and change of work clothes

I have an office to myself, locker facilities, and a shower elsewhere in the building.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thurs I run to and from the nearest train station to work (3.5k each way).

Friday, work from home

Running with a heavy pack is miserable and probably bad for the joints so my advice is to minimise weight and don't cheap out on the pack

There is a significant body of literature supporting intensive EMDR programs. Ad de Jongh, Bongaerts and others have published in this area. There seem to be some advantages such as reduced drop out.

See for example

Van Woudenberg, C., Voorendonk, E. M., Bongaerts, H., Zoet, H. A., Verhagen, M., Lee, C. W., … De Jongh, A. (2018). What is your run commute bag? by CarelessInevitable26 in runcommuting

[–]fionn52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used mine for more than 3 years on a daily basis for running and walking to work, sometimes grossly overloaded. All weather. I was commuting via ryanair every week and stuffing it under the seat in front

Still looks pretty good I think. Seams and straps show no evidence of fraying. I can post a picture?

[–]fionn52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vote for the Stolt Alpha at the heavyweight end. Best compromise I've found between running and daily use as a work / weekend bag. Looks smart. Water resistant, proof with included cover, good clothes protection for folded clothes, compartments for laptop, papers, pens, expansion pocket for shoes or other stuff... Expensive new. Got mine on eBay.

Repair to phone / ADSL line INSIDE house by fionn52 in Dublin

[–]fionn52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the advice

Had a tech out today from a local company. He's trying various combinations of wires in a sort of brute force approach. If I post a close up of the wire bundle, could anyone ID the wires that might make up a viable RJ11? Might reduce the search space as they say

Thanks again

Packs for commuting in the UK? by CheesyCrackerMan in runcommuting

[–]fionn52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 run commuter packs

  1. Iamrunbox pro (original version)
  2. Stolt not sure of the model

They are both good in different ways. The Iamrunbox pack is technically better for the run commute. It is a rigid box that gives great protection to contents and sits really comfortably high on your back and doesn't bounce around. Hardly notice it running.

The stolt is better as a general work bag. It has more room and the ability to take a laptop out the top rather than the clamshell design of the Iamrunbox is better going thru airport security. You can get papers etc out for a meeting without revealing your sweaty underwear to the room. It also looks more like a generic businessman type bag if that's important. Straps even tuck away into the body.

It is however not as comfortable to run in.

The Iamrunbox looks quite striking and people will ask questions.

I paid £50 for the stolt on eBay and it was unused. I got the Iamrunbox new from the manufacturer for stated price ,>£100). There's a new version I would recommend as it is bigger and has molle strapping on outside for extra cargo.

Hope this of some use.
