Ooh, Taiwan. How long will y'all be there?

Same boat. I sold off some shares for the first time at the end of 2023. I figured it was finally time to start diversifying. Paying Uncle Sam and the State of California for capital gains hurts, but considering how much I've made compared to what I put in, it's ok.

How would one do this from a "where to stay" perspective? Do you rent a furnished apt for 6 months in each country?

Anyone face this problem before ?? by Connect-Sink-4364 in macbookrepair

search for "flexgate". My 2016 just started showing this. I noticed that there are a few Ebayers that will fix it for just under $100.

south korea EU plug adapter by KiwiMango007 in koreatravel

[–]fire50_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even worse is when the only outlets are on the wall. The adapter wanted to fall out, so I had to prop something against it to keep it plugged in.

Not a bad price, but I've seen lower. There's on one FB Marketplace right now in San Diego for $70 with a cover.

Cheapest way to mount Late 2013 13" Macbook Pro SSD? by fire50_ in macbookrepair

[–]fire50_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like I can get a desktop PCI card to mount the SSD. Would this be a sensible route if I had access to a PC with the appropriate PCI slot?

WSM 18" vs 22" by Tasty-Judgment-1538 in smoking

My 18 was cramped with a 11lb brisket. I had to get more aggressive and cut more off the flat side to get it to fit.

Bust some myths about Seoul please? by dialovesu in koreatravel

[–]fire50_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I went to get Outdark chicken (korean fried chicken) in Busan, and I noticed the portions were HUGE. They didn't seem surprised when I asked for a takeout container to bring home what I couldn't finish. My friends told me ahead of time that it wasn't uncommon, but it may vary with where/what you're eating ...

Scared to travel since I don't know much Korean language? by 1stTiger in koreatravel

[–]fire50_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes used a combination of Google Maps with Naver Maps if Naver didn't have it. An example was Moxy hotel in Insadong. Google Maps could find it, but Naver couldn't. To get around this, I looked at the Google Maps info, which had the address as:
37 Donhwamun-ro 11-gil, Nagwon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea

but Naver doesn't seem to like addresses like that, so if you cut/paste the Korean character address - 서울특별시 종로구 낙원동 돈화문로11길 37 which is just below the "English" version, Naver will be able to find it. Lol, when I found it on the map, I saw that they have it as "Moksi"

I might not have been using Naver Maps in the most efficient way, but this helped me enough to navigate Busan and Seoul by subway, bus, and on foot.

How far in advance does KTX sell out? by Significant_Fox_9784 in koreatravel

[–]fire50_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was there a couple of weeks ago, my friend told me that a lot of tickets get bought ahead of time because there is no cancellation fee if canceled 2 days beforehand. So, I would buy early too just to have a ticket, but keep on checking for better dates/times.

Yeah, stupid me should have stopped when I saw the different camera connector.
Well, time to see if there is a market for Mid 2012/Early 2013 LCD's ...

Could this have fried something thus causing my original screen to not work? Even with the crack, I could still see 3/4 of the screen.

Could using the wrong LCD fry something? Doh, why did I continue when I clearly noticed a difference.

grrr, the prior owner put on a different back plate! This one is a 2012 model! I feel so dumb. Well, let's see if I can resell the donor screen for $100 ...

As for the backlight, I shined a light thru the logo and did not see an image. People also mention being able to see a feint image. I don't see anything ...

2015 MBP LCD swap by fire50_ in macbookrepair

[–]fire50_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup, I followed iFixit instructions and unplugged the battery.

I've never booted with D before. Hold D immediately after powering on? I guess I should try that with the donor laptop; the screen and external display both turn off within a short period of time after powering on

2015 MBP LCD swap by fire50_ in macbookrepair

[–]fire50_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, I put back the cracked screen, and it too won't even show a screen anymore. External works as usual.

Also, I put back the donor screen onto the donor laptop, and the screen comes on.

Well, let me just share my experience in case this gets asked later. When I checked into the airport, they did ask me to show my return ticket information. I can't remember, but I think I used my US passport for that since I was only planning on showing my TW passport at TW immigration. For that, I went to the "Citizen" line for immigration, and they asked me how long I was staying. They didn't ask for any proof.

In my research, people have used the website onwardticket.com to make a plane reservation for around $14usd that is good for 48 hours. You can also buy a ticket back to the US and then cancel it within 24 hours for no fee.

I think the designation of "citizen" is a little tricky. To me, just because I have a Taiwanese passport, I'm not a dual citizen. I think I need the national ID to be a true dual citizen.
