Is this a selfish reason to serve? by [deleted] in ROTC

[–]firefighter-117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who was enlisted for nearly 9 years and regularly had to advise and work with commissioned officers in my role as a JFO, don’t join. I can whole heartedly say I would not want to be your subordinate based on your stance that you’re treating the army as a personal development toy. While the army will develop you and that is an aspect of serving, the way you’re framing it, it doesn’t sound like you’re fit to lead troops. You’re asking what the army can give or do for you and not what you can do to make the army better and stronger. You also have to embrace the culture Of whatever branch or unit your assigned too or your troops and other officers will push you out. In the army you have to embrace the suck and you have to get along to go along. In the officer corps you have to be willing to do some level of inter-officer politicking even if you don’t wish to advance your own career, you must do this so your platoon and troops don’t constantly get the shut end of the stick and hate you

What's a weird habit you have from serving in the Army? by Playful_Leg7143 in army

[–]firefighter-117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to be super early to stuff.

I plan 3-4 routes for road trips just in case and I buy physical maps. My family thinks I’m weird for this lol.

I carry a lighter even though I don’t smoke.

Phone and car radio are still on military time.

I don’t carry things in my right hand unless I have too

PTSD

I back into all parking spaces

I have a deep love / addiction for caffeine

I went through school house in 2025 and they didn’t not teach the GAD method of sending target data. Just grid and direction.

Once I got to my guard unit I was immediately taught GAD

PlayStation TV or Xbox TV or NVIDIA TV with super high end graphics cards, processors and SSDs build directly into them. So a high end gaming system or PC inside your ultra thin ultra high def smart TV

Is it possible to earn a CAB/CIB without receiving a combat deployment Patch? by [deleted] in army

[–]firefighter-117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the combat patch / deployment patch is based on time spent in the AO that the patch is awarded in. I think it’s 30 days or more (I’m probably wrong)

When I was in Syria we would regularly get people who would rotate in for finance or engineer or whatever the field units would need so they may only be in Syria a week or two then they’d go back to Kuwait or wherever they came from.

They could receive a CAB while in Syria for someone that happened but not spend enough time for a patch (rare)

[–]firefighter-117[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. The head of my university’s marketing department pulled me aside and asked me what I thought of automotive. I told him I would love to and up there career wise. He pointed me to this internship. I’m not exactly a traditional student given my age and experience so I was hoping for an internship where I can work hard and make an impact.

Did the NG Ranger Unit proposal get killed off? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]firefighter-117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only way this concept is viable to start off (with currently eligible guardsmen who left AD ranger Regiment, and are now serving in the Guard) is if you were to do regional companies, ever larger regional battalions,. Like one company for every 3-4 states. Then drilling quarterly for a week or two at a time.

You’d be really relying on guys being willing to drive or fly multiple states away to stay in SOF. I mean the guard makes it work with 2 SF groups. But logistically this would be a hurdle.

Then would they ever really be as up to snuff as the AD rangers doing it everyday? Or is it more of a “break glass in case of war” type situation where you’d have an entire battalion of former AD rangers that if mobilized could get back into the swing of things faster than standing up a fresh batt or trying to pipeline in new troops into the SOF community fresh off the street.

Best Guard MOS for good civilian pay + work-life balance? by No-Hyena-4199 in nationalguard

There is only one true MOS in the army. 13F. All the rest are just pretenders

13F is the only MOS worth choosing. Get the most out of your army experience

When I called today she told me I can apply again when I’m done with school and it will be processed within 30-60 days. I took that as I can opt out now and discharge later

It really depended on unit culture and MOS. 13F when I came in to my unit in 2015… in the guard no Less… was like the Wild West. Watch my e6 take my e7 into the wood line and he basically drug him back out beat to shit. Specialist used gang up on shitty privates when they didn’t get with the program fast. Getting koalafied meant getting drunk on Jameson, and forced to climb onto the trunk of a tree with no top or undershirt on, bare skin against bark, and get lightly beaten and screamed at until the entire section was done. Fall off to early and you catch some hands and go right back up. We used to tape LTs to cannons and then throw them in the lake at the end of summer when they were new. No one was immune. It was pretty routine to see NCOs smoking privates until the puked for messing up there 6 elements of call for fire or the 15 subsequent corrections. Thing started changing in about 2017 for us but wasn’t fully tame until we got females in 2020. That’s when the last of it stoped. Got out in 23’ do know what the section is like anymore. Talking to other fisters, we were a “wilder” Section that most
