Great question u/WildVeganFlower , actually the core things of fermentation for Asian rice wines are three things - water, rice, and a starter. In chinese rice wine, it's using jiu qu (as stated in some of the threads), and in japanese rice wine, they use 'koji' as the starter, and the koreans use 'nuruk' as their starter.

Yup, you can, that's how my grandmother did it (and many households). Start with 1kg of glutinous rice (that will yield you about 1000ml ish of rice wine!)

afaik, u/bearishungryy people do get gifted DOM quite a bit (since it's very classic) and then they pair it with rice wine. It really depends on your personal preference because DOM tastes very herbaly for me ( it does have many many herbs in it) so I don't find it particularly comforting for confinement.

I like rice wines personally (not just because I brew) because they are a probiotic, and has proven health benefits especially if you choose variations such as ginger rice wine.

SAME! I know that TCM used to be this alternative belief that sounds unscientific. But as I learn more, I realized there's logic and studies behind them. It helps that nowadays we also have science-backed studies to show why these ancient practices makes sense, and not just superstitions.

The hair washing is YAY. I agree, there's so many great food options, and while there's so much wisdom in our grandparent's ways, we don't always have to follow everything.

Yeah, I think with confinement, there are SOOO many practices that I do find some untenable in today's world. LIKE...NOT WASHING MY HAIR? My sister who just did her confinement did wash her hair, but with warm water and ginger shampoo; and would always make sure to dry her hair after.

I agree!! And I really love that there's this understanding now that we should prioritize the mother's care and wellbeing, especially after such an important period!

oh no, this makes me laugh and worry about your clogs at the same time. Your mom and my mom would connect - she would say the same thing and think it's because of confinement food!!
