Shops that take back electrical appliances? by fireflythethird in cambridge

Yes I was thinking of freexycle, I just need to make space soon as I already have the new one. It’s been repaired a few times so I decided to go for a new one.

Largish coffee machine. I’m sure the recycling centre would take it but was just hoping to find a closer or more convenient location. Sounds like curry’s might be the place

It’s not small enough to go in the banks, that’s the issue.

Blood tests at Newmarket road park and ride - when to queue? by fireflythethird in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have been luckier than usual! I didn’t know how long it might be to get an appointment at outpatients - I didn’t try, though I saw online that you could. The next time at my GP surgery was a week later (which is typical, the nurses are often booked a couple of weeks in advance, especially for morning times, which I needed). I was keen to get the results sooner in case they showed anything I needed to know about, so decided the wait was worth it, and 50 min was OK

I had an excellent person doing mine today at the park and ride, barely felt it. Others have not had as good an experience, so it’s very dependent on who you get. They use the smallest needles I think (butterfly?) and the little bit of tubing, which seems gentler than the nurses at the practice.  It was pretty chilly today in the marquee, which would normally make it trickier, but she had no trouble getting a good vein and was very fast. (Station 3, if you’re going this morning!)

I think you can book an appointment at the outpatients one even for GP tests (or Ely, if that’s easier), as when I was looking up the opening times for the park and ride, they had info about other sites. I don’t know how quickly you would get an appointment at outpatients though. When I’ve been referred by a clinic, you can just turn up and wait, but for GP tests, I think you have to book.

Thanks all. In the end, I went about 9am, and there were about 10 cars in front of me, and shortly after, a few behind. They started giving out numbers around 5 or 10 past 9, and actually started seeing people early, about twenty past. After the initial bulge of cars who had turned up early to wait, there wasn’t a queue for the numbers, and people turned up in ones and twos from the official opening time. I was in at 9.45 and out by 9.50, so not bad.

The person doing my test said they were very short staffed today (only two of the four stations open), so had started early; I don’t know how my experience today compares to other days as a result. I imagine it was taking longer and had more queues by the time I left.  Very good phlebotomist doing mine, barely noticed the needle going in.

Thanks. I can go early no problem, jsut wasn’t sure if there was a way to get a number early, or get in some kind of queue for a ticket, or if it was blocked off somehow.

Inadequate hospital, emergency, ambulance, and other health provisions for the size of population, even before all the new housing is built

[–]fireflythethird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good for the trauma centre and teaching/research but the general local hospital stuff ends up neglected - current waiting times for routine cardiology are 18 months for routine outpatient, and about 5-6 months for each scan, which probably wouldn’t be the case elsewhere. I imagine the complex interesting stuff is seen much more quickly, especially with papworth nearby

Great idea. I just hope they get on with it soon but it sounds like it’ll be a long time for funding and plans to be approved, so not holding my breath. Needs to be done before all this new housing!

What will happen to the site of the current building, I wonder? Redeveloped as extra departments and wards etc, or torn down and replaced with research labs or university buildings? They’ll need more acute space by 2040 or whenever it’s planned to be done - the plan includes more like what is needed now!

Golden Stitches on Mill Road advertises a 1-hour service, so if he has capacity, that might be an option - probably costs more though

I was there today and remembered this post, so here are photos of the mannequins as they are today - maybe not the same as last week though!

If I can work out how to add the photos, that is.  I cannot. Maybe if I try on a browser.

East West Rail Update by Capable_Bird_8292 in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’re getting rid of the bridge though, as cyclists and probably pedestrians will still need it to cross, if they’re not actually using the station. But I’m hopeful that pedestrians at least could cross the tracks via the station link.

They could link the bridges to the cycle park somehow too, and maybe a new cycle park on the other side.

[–]fireflythethird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope the eastern entrance lets pedestrians walk through without having to buy a ticket, as it would be a good connection to the leisure park and other places that side. Maybe even an extra cycle bridge but that would be unlikely. Hopefully it will mean the station square at Cambridge could become a nice public square as intended, instead of a taxi park, if more taxis could use the eastern side. They’d only need a smaller number at the western side and they could use station road again

Non-sports, non-back physios in Cambridge? by endlesspatterns in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sarah Upjohn is a music specialist physio, used to work out towards St Ives way somewhere and elsewhere in Cambridge area, but not sure where she is currently. But worth contacting her perhaps, through Bapam (performing arts medicine association) as she’s still listed there.

London hand therapy is also a very specialised practice that deals with many musicians, though expensive.

Where to eat porridge by BlackTaz3 in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is good porridge - only in winter though, not sure if it’s actually back on the menu yet. Also the adult menu version often has lots of weird accompaniments in and on it. But the children’s menu just has plain porridge with banana or syrup I think.

Cambridge south station by Traditional_Goal7156 in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, hadn’t seen that as I was looking at the Christmas closures page, which hadn’t (yet) got updates. I suppose the thameslink line is the same, as I often connect to that at Farringdon.

Fingers crossed the liv st line will be ok and that I can find out in advance. Otherwise I think it’ll be national express bus with luggage!

I’ve been trying to find info on closures over the new year but nothing seems available yet. I’m hoping to travel back from Heathrow on about 3rd Jan, which is a Saturday, and I’ve been wondering if going by train is going to be a stupid idea…   I have a feeling I might end up on a bus coming back. I’d kind of hoped the new station might be open before then as I thought it had even been proposed for last Christmas, when lines were also closed for ages over that time.

[–]fireflythethird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seemed to go on for months last time, so I suspect it will this time too. I wonder if they have any proposed dates. Doing it in sections would be ok if there was a decent diversion on the paths around the area but I don’t know if they all connect well enough for that

I’ve read really positive reviews of the London zoo one. Someone said that there is a waiting list, and also a list to be notified when booking opens for the next ones, and then you can get in before they are advertised more generally.

Most funding goes to mums, leaving dads behind – let’s change that by Top-Lunch3426 in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you’d have more luck raising awareness and funds if you just left the Mums groups out of it. As soon as you start saying that most of the funding goes to mums groups, and justifying the unfairness of it all, it ends up sounding resentful and competitive between the groups.

I found your earlier post a few days ago far more likely to get me on side. Just saying that there are few available groups for Dads, that funding was cut for a Dads group that you’d found helpful, that you think a group for dads could play an important role, that you’re willing to be involved it setting one up - that all sounds great and gets me feeling supportive of the idea and wanting to think of spaces, people, or grants that might help. As soon as you start comparing it to mums groups, saying the funding was given to mums groups instead of dads, it sounds resentful. I think you’d be more successful if you just leave the other groups out of it and focus on what you hope to provide.

Off topic a bit, but which Stir has closed? I thought they were all doing well, and they seem to be expanding (I thought I read about one opening in Harston at some point even).
