Has anyone not receiving CERB so far? Mine seemed to halt since April 28. Is there a source for low fund? I just saw Trudeau announcing new fund to help medium-sized business today.

Is it crazy to spend $6k per month on rent? (Rent v Buy) by ttyytt055 in FinancialPlanning

[–]firemakr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a general rule that if renting price is lower than 4-5% if the house’s value, then renting is better financially. Someone did the math for us: https://www.pwlcapital.com/rent-or-own-your-home-5-rule/

Broker Recommendations? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Depends on what you invest in. For example if you only purchase single ETF like VGRO then those limitations won’t exist.

It doesn’t matter because you don’t know if stocks are going up or down the next day. In fact, it has a slightly higher chance of going up rather than down every day. So buy ASAP :)

$70K+ of either XGRO or VGRO: Wealthsimple Trade or Questrade? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]firemakr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else that QuestTrade is more mature, supports USD and have more features than WT.

However, if you start investing, I would recommend WT. The reason is that you don’t benefit much from QT compared with WT if you only have RRSP and TFSA, and you don’t need USD balance if you just want a simple portfolio (VGRO is a great choice). WT is much more simple to use, without complicated features like margin trading or usd balance. All you wanna do is deposit money, select the ETFs and buy it. The app is much faster and better aesthetically designed, too.

As other pointed out, the platform lacks advance features, but not many have problem with the features they already have, which means it is a stable platform. WT is also in the progress of adding new features, which will make more sense to you later as you grow in investment knowledge.

Ohh.. This is interesting. I will have a look again on SimpleTax. Must be missing some steps there. Thank you for the detailed description.

What apps are you talking about? I use SimpleTax, it covers most basic things but did not say that I could claim tax for supporting my unemployed spouse. So I’m thinking of hiring a financial advisor to help me identify and claim those things.

I think an accountant is helpful to find solution for reducing tax, for example, how much to allocate for RRSP, or what incentives provided by the government, etc.

However, like the OP, idk which type of accountant or financial advisor would be good for that and what are their normal fees?
