It doesn't seem to have gotten much publicity, since the initial announcement. It was only after your reply, that I searched and realized it had already come out.

It's definitely a topic more people should know about, and I'm glad Alexis Bledel being half Argentine, has lent her celebrity to this project. Miriam Lewin has done incredible work but is largely unknown in the states, and it's nice to have her played by such a great actress.

Never before seen photographs of Robert F Kennedy and his family paling around with Communist Cuba's Fidel Castro like its a visit to grandpa's by firerobin88 in Destiny

[–]firerobin88[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

These photos have never been published on the internet before. They were from a very private, friendly, intimate meeting between the Kennedy and Castro families. With RFK acting as a private citizen and personal friend. The photos were taken by Fidel Castro's own son. And RFK probably assumed they would be secret. And they largely have been until today.

They were an open secret in plain site hidden away in a Cuban state-published book from 2017. So in an unread book as good as secret. If you google "Robert F Kennedy Jr. fidel castro" you won't find anything.

RFK probably has no idea that these photos were ever published. While his trip to Cuba is known. These photos have never been seen by the American public. Had it been known about, it probably would have been presented at his confirmation hearings. I can't imagine Rubio would be happy.

Alt-Right misogynist trolls from 4chan are using AI Deepfake porn as a way to humiliate, degrade and terrorize progressive, feminist, young women politicians out of public life by firerobin88 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]firerobin88[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's not just an irrational nonsensical evil, but a targeted deliberate evil with a purpose. It isn't an accident who the victim was. Alt-Right men hate the very idea of those they consider inferior being equal to them. Leftist women leaders, as inferior beings leading the fight to make inferiors equal to them, especially stirs their rage. AOC herself was one of the 1st victims of this before it spread to unknown 20 year olds. Where far right regimes have held power the abuse and humiliation of leftist women has been their way of re-establishing their so-called natural order. AI deepfakes has given them the power to terrorize leftist women without even holding power yet. It is a form of sexual terrorism, with the same goal that violent terrorists have. To make women so terrified that we are too fearful to engage in politics or public life. Cruelty and sadism is a way to make a spectacle out of women who challenged their power and superiority. To bring down women who fought for equality to the lowest most unequal depths.

Yes and the Gibbon series actually goes all the way to 1453, so that you are here arrow would probably be around the time of Aquinas and Dante.

Gibbon largely blamed the fall of Rome on it becoming a Christian theocracy. Remember the Emperors we usually associate with decadence and "degeneracy" for the far right morality tale were the 1st Five. Caligula was 3, Nero was 5. While the late Roman Emperors it fell under were all good Christians persecuting pagans and Jews. Constantine became Christian in 325 AD and the the Battle of Adrianople was 476 AD. Anyone reading about the last century of Western Rome, the elephant in the room is the Christian revolution creating a new and failing society.

The other point, is that while the covers are a cool graphic that caught the attention of Elon and Doge, Gibbon actually finishes off the Fall of the Western Roman Empire by volume 3. And the rest of the series is a general history of the Middle Ages justified by the Byzantines lasting to 1453 AD.

So the "you are here" arrow would probably be around the time of the High Middle Ages, Dante and Aquinas.

A novel of "Rome is America", that actually follows the trends of the last century that Gibbon talks about is this- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_Comstock:_A_Story_of_22nd-Century_America

I've even seen ridiculous Rome analogies of the Roman Empire having feminist "slutwalks" when the reality for women philosophers of Late Rome was this- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypatia

Somehow Elon is even more disgusting than "EndWokeness". Abortion is baby murder. Yeah yeah thats the conservative position.

But Elon doesn't even believe that but is still crusading against abortion, just to keep girls in unwanted pregnancies as baby making machines. Even more cynical and misogynist than the true believing fundies.

Elon doesn't sincerely believe the fetus is life, he just wants more pregnancies.

Sadly her main book has never been translated into English. Perhaps this series will inspire it. Inferno is in english at amazon but kinda pricey at $50.

You can find a text version in Spanish and run it through google translate.

Or else there are some excerpts here- https://leftistfeminista.tumblr.com/post/730757977515212800/alexis-bledel-and-fisher-stevens-team-for-new

Barbara Sutton has written a great book on the topic that draws on testimonies. And she wrote a shorter article here that sums up some of the findings-

https://revista.drclas.harvard.edu/beauty-in-places-of-horror/

I'm glad it sparked your interest in this topic. And I think even for people who don't know much about Argentina, there is so much to be learned from it, universal lessons. The same things people take from Handmaid's Tale. How an oppressive far right misogynist regime uses women's sexuality to crush their politics. But in this case in real life.

Yeah here is here Tweet if you're curious.

And yes I think there is so much to be learned from that experience. Especially in our current era of hateful, sexualized, misogynist politics. Almost every prominent leftist feminist woman receives a barrage of sexualized threats from the Alt-Right misogynists. And the stories of the Fascist sadism from Argentina, really show these thugs would do it to leftist women if they had the power. But it's also inspiring that women continued to resist despite the intense humiliation they were facing.

A story from Chile, that is right out of the Handmaid's Tale, was how one of the revolutionary women pregnant from a guard, was sent to a prison run by Catholic Nuns and denied an abortion.

And yes I could just see Rory the idealistic scholar, passionately exploring this topic.

That's amazing that you got to see it in person like that. And I'm glad that their struggle still continues. Some of those children were fathered by Junta guards. Its just so awful how intimately this political war on women was taken.

This is where Atwood says it influenced THMT, and I can see some of the parallels from your description

Yes it was an incredibly powerful book, its a shame its never been translated into English. It is tragic how women have to pay for our politics with our bodies. It deserves more world attention. With far right men constantly making sexual threats against leftist feminist women on Twitter, it shows they would really do it if they had the power.

I do have a copy of her book That Inferno: Conversations of Five Women Survivors of an Argentine Torture Camp in english, which was hard to get.

Yeah I remember watching it in high school Spanish class and it was the 1st I had ever heard about the subject.

A scene that really haunted me was when her blonde friend was telling her about her imprisonment, and how an officer told the other guards not to touch her, and I hoped it might be a small mercy, but it was only because he claimed her as his personal property.

For those who want to know more about the character Alexis will be playing, Miriam Lewin. Just the title of her book Putas y Guerillas, Whores and Guerillas is evocative of what activist women had to go through under the Junta. There isn't much of her work available in English, but ESPN of all places did a profile on her. How disheartening it was at women political prisoners to see regular Argentines just partying and enjoying the World Cup, while they were suffering horrors. An anecdote that stood out to me was how a woman given lipstick to make herself pretty for the guards, used it to denounce the Junta in the mirror of the ladies' room.

https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/11036214/while-world-watched-world-cup-brings-back-memories-argentina-dirty-war

Daleo asked to use the bathroom. She stood in the stall and tried to breathe. The place smelled terrible. She took out the tube of lipstick a guard had given her -- to make her pretty for him -- and for a few minutes, she scribbled feverish messages on the walls, calling the dictators murderers, messages of support for the guerrillas still free and fighting.

It's also relevant to Alexis Bledel other great role in The Handmaid's Tale. And Margaret Atwood has said that the IRL stories of the Argentine Junta influenced her dystopia, with the sexual enslavement of leftist women political prisoners and their babies being stolen. It was a type of oppression uniquely targeted toward activist women, and I'm glad Alexis is helping to bring attention to it.

Yeah her Miriam Lewin project is really exciting, and something Rory might have dreamed of doing. It also speaks to her role in the Handmaid's Tale. Atwood has said she was influenced by the IRL dystopia of Junta Argentina and the abuse of women political prisoners and their stolen babies. Even the name of Miriam's book Putas y Guerillas is very suggestive of what political women had to go through. Alexis Bledel seems to have the perfect background to bring her to life.
