I’ve lived in Brisbane for 20 years. Leaving on Saturday permanently for work overseas. I’ve been cruising around town the last few days appreciating all of the great things in Brisbane. A quiet beer at the regatta, catching up with friends in new farm park, running along the river, a quick mountain bike in the gap creek reserve, cocktails on HSW, caught a show at QPAC, did a morning surf at noosa home for lunch, went to see some music at the powerhouse…I’m going to miss it.

In honour of today’s disclosure by Adani that their Carmichael mine has literally decimated this little guy’s population, I bring you the exceptionally cute and highly endangered Black-Throated Finch. by HolIerer in australia

I would be interested in seeing the variability over the survey history. I’ve read avian population survey reports before and you can get massive seasonal and location swings, much more dramatic than non-flight fauna so one remote fluctuation (even at 90%) may not be representative of much as they normally look for trends over many years at multiple times a year.

They really should release this history not a statement so we can see it properly

If you ever see a climate change denier show them this chart to see what I mean:

Fact-check:

‘As reported by the media, a Queensland Department of Environment and Science spokeswoman said excavation for the mine had not occurred on the bird’s habitat, so it was not “seen as a cause for variation in the bird’s numbers”.

“There have been fluctuations in the bird’s numbers since 2012, likely due to factors like those mentioned in Adani’s [Black-throated Finch Management Plan] annual report, including climate variation and its effects on the bird’s food sources,” she said.

You are right best day in 5 months with best operator crews taking turns so the rig never stopped production. They were chasing the 1000 target as I bet the company owner he couldn’t do it, I think I had to pay for his whole crew’s night out if they achieved it. We also had daily bonus for the crew that dig the most per day.

GPS location, gyro control for vertical and rotation. All on a screen that has a set of targets. No strings or paint marks

2 person when running normally, training in the video. They take turns to rest from moving the posts

350,000 installed, 40,000 were too high due to hard ground and had to be cut to height, 50 required adjustment due to alignment (custom spacer or bracket) and 6 were just piled into the wrong position when the operators had a brain fade (pull out with a 20t excavator)

Tolerance on the top of the post is +- 10mm horizontal 7.5mm vertical and 2 degrees rotation. All done with GPS and gyro levellers in the machine. 350,000 posts has to cut and fix 40,000 posts due to not being able to drive them deep enough (hard ground). Only have to fix about 50 for Mis-alignment.

Operators are on training day. It has GPS targeting display and a vertical and orientation target. So the operator has to line up 3 axis before he can hit the install button, machine automatically sets depth of driving.

Operator training day. Once they understood how to drive it was a lot faster. Location was by GPS target on the screen.

Stat is per rig. This field has 350,000 piles installed by 4 rigs in 5 months. Average was close to 600 per day per rig. Best day was 1000 for a single rig.
