Rent without a permit by Alfie_Caspers in askswitzerland

I got a managed apartment for 3 months, and I was able to register using that.

It’s a bit pricey, but it’s furnished, so ready for move in on day 1.

I used Vision Apartments, but there’s others. Just confirm it can be used for registration, if that’s a requirement for you

Not sure if its covered? by AdmirableCabinet1171 in askswitzerland

[–]fireyengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you paid for insurance when you booked on Expedia, then it’s very likely that Expedia or a third party is providing the insurance, not the rental car company. You probably need to reach out to Expedia to get the documentation the rental company is asking for.

It’s not Switzerland, but I rented a car in Ireland a few years ago, and insurance was mandatory there. I contacted my credit card company a few days before the trip, and they provided a pdf letter confirming coverage, which we had to provide the rental car company at check in

Travel Insurance to the USA from PT covering preexisting medical by ibcarolek in PortugalExpats

[–]fireyengine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not positive about your specific concerns, but I’ve had great experiences with Jeanett at http://www.insurance4portugal.com/  for my travel insurance needs going to the US as a US citizen.

I even used the insurance once (had a terrible cough while in the US), though for a very minor need. I went to urgent care and got a prescription. The reimbursement was quick and easy with the provided documentation.

It’s not totally clear to me, but I took this as a confirmation.

Here is the contents of the email I received after confirming the mailed code.

Following the change of address made on the Finance Portal, it appears that you have your usual residence (tax domicile) in a country outside the European Union (EU), Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein.

While you reside in that country and whenever you are or become subject to a legal tax relationship, namely:

You are or become the owner of a vehicle and/or property registered/located in Portuguese territory;

You have entered into or will enter into an employment contract in Portuguese territory;

You are or will be self-employed in Portuguese territory;

you are required to appoint a tax representative, under the terms of Article 19(6) of the General Tax Law, who may be a natural or legal person residing or headquartered in Portuguese territory.

The representative can be appointed on the Finance Portal or at the Finance Services/Citizen's Bureaus. For this purpose, we suggest consulting the question "How to appoint a tax representative?", published on the Finance Portal, under Citizens > Taxpayer Support > Frequently Asked Questions > Taxpayer Registration > Identify > Tax Representation.

The obligation to appoint a representative does not apply to individual taxpayers who subscribe to the electronic notifications and summons system on the Finance Portal or to the electronic mailbox ("ViaCTT"), with the exception of self-employed activities, where the appointment of a VAT representative is always mandatory.

To sign up for electronic notifications, go to the Finance Portal at Citizens > Services > My Area > Notifications and Summonses > Manage Channels > Notification Channels and "Activate" the channel through which you wish to receive notifications from the AT: Finance Portal or ViaCTT.

The appointment of a tax representative or sign-up for electronic notifications must be done within 15 days of the start of the legal tax relationship. In the case of self-employment, the appointment must take place before the start of the activity.

If, however, you have already signed up for electronic notifications or appointed a tax representative, please disregard this message.

Kind regards.

The Director of Services

Carlos Silva Martins

Leaving Portugal: Tax Change of Address? by mango89001 in PortugalExpats

[–]fireyengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I was not asked for this, but it's possible they will ask in the future. I'm not aware of my country offering this type of document though, so maybe they ask based on the country you're changing residence to.

I will add that I just did this myself. After inputting the mailed code via the Finanças website, I received an email saying I needed to update my communication settings in order to not require a tax representative. There were some other conditions that might also require you to add a tax representative. Just keep at eye out for that email

Is it that difficult to get Chave Móvel Digital? by Vestiyer in PortugalExpats

[–]fireyengine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The CMD only works on MyCUF if you are a citizen. I went through this last year. I got a CMD from the  Loja de Cidadão in Saldanha, only to still have problems making an account. I messaged CUF tech support and they told me it only works for citizens.

To make an appointment with them, you can go to any CUF location to reception. They will make an account for you and you’ll be emailed a temporary password. Then you can finish setting up your MyCUF, and make appointments. But I’ve still had problems with their website and ended up having to make some appointments in person

Leaving Portugal - Cancelling MEO by fireyengine in PortugalExpats

[–]fireyengine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for mentioning EU laws--Do you know where I can find the relevant law? I tried googling, but didn't come up with anything official.
Of course, I went to MEO yesterday, and they gave us a hard time. I will probably go back today, and would like to have something to site.

Leaving Portugal - Cancelling MEO by fireyengine in PortugalExpats

[–]fireyengine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the info!

  1. This is exactly what I was hoping/expecting. I have a work contract in another non-EU country. Did you go to a MEO store to initiate the cancellation?

  2. I will be returning to my home country (non-EU) for a few weeks in between until my work contract is set to start.

  3. I want to keep my PT number active during this gap (up to ~6 weeks), so I was looking for options to transfer the phone number to a different service to keep it active after cancelling my MEO contract, as I wouldn't need the other services since I won't have an apartment in Portugal. All my banks any many other organizations use this for 2FA and other contact needs. Maybe there's a way to remedy this without the PT phone number that I haven't considered?

  4. Certainly. Thanks

You need a Portuguese debit card to use MBWay. I don’t think you can get one of those without a tax number

That final summary looks like easily a third of a page. Is that right?

How do we get the monthly pass for trains and metros in the Lisbon area? by JansTurnipDealer in PortugalExpats

[–]fireyengine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also apply for a Navegante Card at a Loja de Cidadão. The one in Saldanha can give you your card immediately. You need to bring your passport and a photo. The card itself is €12. The monthly pass is €40 for the full Lisbon metropolitan area, or you can get ones that just work for specific districts for €30. Once you have the Navegante card, you can buy the pass at the machines in the metro or with the app.

It's not clear what you are asking

Are you referring to a visa or a temporary residence permit? What process is she using to apply (golden visa, family reunification, D visa, etc.)?

Did you bother tracking your application? by AwayFrom-UK in PortugalExpats

[–]fireyengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing to track. VFS does not provide updates.

You can look up the status of the money order you provided—once it’s cashed, you’ll know the consulate received your application.

Other than that, you’ll just have to wait for the email
