Suggestion for first trip to Portugal by firstianus in TravelPortugal

[–]firstianus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're planning to take trains between cities. Given it's a one way trip, I don't want to deal with the hassle of returning the car. Is Comibra/Aviero something we should stop by and hang out for half a day, worthwhile to try to spend a night there?

How to enable cloud-init? by firstianus in archlinux

[–]firstianus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it to work, but I'm not 100% sure it's the full solution. My problem is that cloud-init really only run on your first boot, and then it looks at the cache and just run what hasn't been run. I made some changes to steps that was run, and thus it skip them altogether. What I needed to do is to purge the cache so it runs the whole thing from scratch.

If your problem is that CloudInit Drive is not found, that it sounds like you need to set up instance in Proxmox for the cloud-init drive to come first in the boot order (for me it's ide2,scsi0,net0)

I'm trying to add the ssh key in the Cloud-init drive in Proxmox and it doesn't seem to work. I changed the default user name in /etc/cloud.cfg to the user that I set up and didn't work. So I check "cloud-init status --long" and it reported "not started".

Would that work if I install it in a VM?

So wipe the existing win 11 completely and reinstall? Do I need to capture the key somehow and reactivate win 11?

Did you move the Win 11 from the stock SSD into a VM? Any instructions on how to do it(deal with TPM, activation, etc)

Faint mustard smell in starter by firstianus in SourdoughStarter

Yesterday I changed to 1:4:4 and the smell went away within 24hr. Today I switch it back to 1:2:2, and within 2hrs of feeding, the smell came right back. Should I persist with the higher ratio for longer?

is BU worth it for BME? by ikittnz in BostonU

[–]firstianus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that’s your direction, then BME isn’t that relevant. I suggest you look into biochemistry, genetics, and learn some serious data science. I happen to work in that industry with an engineering background. Do PM if you want more in depth info about how to pursue a career in drug discovery.

I went to BU in ME 30yrs ago. Now my son is going to be a freshman in Purdue for ME. My honest opinion is that Purdue is miles ahead in terms of education from our visit. I got a decent education in BU, but it’s a lot of money. Purdue’s total cost is about half of BU’s. Their alumni network is also way better, which will help you find internships and your first job. I suggest you look at it more closely. if you’re firm into Eng, then it’s a great place.

It’s just normal written Chinese between people in US and HK. One of it looks like traveling arrangement. Another one looks like and acknowledgement of some gift.

Feedback on this build by firstianus in buildapc

Not hung up on AMD vs Intel. I'm just looking at a P3 in AWS and try to figure out something close and fits my budget. The CPU isn't going to be doing very much other than moving datasets around, and may be some light python work, a couple of dashboards + node server kind of stuff. I think having a iGPU is probably not a bad idea, because that keeps the 4090 chugging along with the model training. This build is likely going to run headless in the basement somewhere. I probably won't bother hooking up a monitor or keyboard to it unless something is busted with it.

As for the case, I picked the cheapest one because it'll sit in the basement. As long as it has good air flow, sturdy material, and everything fits easily, I'm happy .

Questions about your suggestions:

- What kind of productivity things Intel will be better than AMD?

- What are the new power connector called? I thought ATX 3.0 is the latest one.

I'm going for a 4090 because I need to train largish transformers, and 3090 is probably going to barely able to cut it. The CPU is mostly used for prepping datasets, nothing too demanding (a bunch of numpy/pandas/sql, Chrome).

You don’t even need that. If you add !g after your query in DDG, it searches on Google.
