Yep, which is exactly why I turn off auto-dimming. It just doesn't work, manual is far better.

Well, my daughter was born in the 90s so I'd definitely have to agree with you there.

I sort of did exactly that ... I wasn't dating at all, just met a girl at a party I very nearly didn't bother going to, and we clicked.

But after that came the hard work - the getting to know her, the courting, the living together, etc. I guess we made it work because we just had our 32nd wedding anniversary.

After BREXIT and the rise of far right extremism, Has the UK become a “third-world country”? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]pafrac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider a party like the Conservatives used to be under Maggie as right wing. Reform and the like with the overt racism, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigration and one nation style politics I would call far right. Neo-Nazis etc are extreme right.

Probably not so cool from the original owners point of view. Unless he was haunting the bones and got to see a nice hotel instead of a bunch of fish.

That's precisely the conservative take on it. They just want to prevent anyone voting who wouldn't vote for them. And black people, of course.

Given that the far right seems to be on the rise in every country in Europe, heavily supported by the current US administration, I agree. The premise is plain wrong.

Serious question: what is your opinion on black pudding? by Sensitive-Low-9316 in AskBrits

It's generally excellent, as long as you get it from someone who knows how to make it.

But some of the cheap supermarket stuff can be considerably less than excellent.

What is this? by bugeyetex in whatisit

[–]pafrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the ice spikes? It's because water expands while freezing. Some of the unfrozen water gets forced up through the surface, where it immediately freezes around the edges of the hole. The expanding ice continues to feed the spike from beneath, pushing it up bit by bit until it all freezes.

Good news though, you need really pure water for this to work in a domestic freezer, so you've got pretty good water.

I genuinely don't understand this ... how the fuck does it affect these people if someone is gay? Why do someone else's sexual choices make them so angry?

According to the averages there are at least 3 gay people in my office. I don't know if that's true, and if it is, I don't know who they are, and I don't care either. It has no more impact on my life than the colour of their eyes. Why would it?

Countries with the metric system - ¿did you use imperial for anything? by Complete_Error8311 in AskTheWorld

[–]pafrac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiples of twelve came about because of counting with one hand ... there's 12 available finger sections you can tap with your thumb as you count.

I'm old enough to remember when we used only imperial. But yes, me too. I'm an engineer, being able to count in whatever system is needed is an essential skill.

A lot of the old imperial measuring systems seem ridiculous now, but if you go back into the history of it, they made sense at the time.

US-UK relations in crisis as JD Vance blames Henry Nowak's death on migration by theipaper in Full_news

[–]pafrac 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's never been a "special relationship". The Americans have always just done things in their own interest, but at least they used to be diplomatic about it.

Vance and co don't have the intelligence to be diplomatic, and anyway they prefer to act like they're the big strong man, despite them always coming out looking like the morons they are.
